ਭਗਤਿ ਪ੝ਰੇਮ ਆਰਾਧਿਤੰ ਸਚ੝ ਪਿਆਸ ਪਰਮ ਹਿਤੰ ॥ ਬਿਲਲਾਪ ਬਿਲਲ ਬਿਨੰਤੀਆ ਸ੝ਖ ਭਾਇ ਚਿਤ ਹਿਤੰ ॥੧॥

ਜਪਿ ਮਨ ਨਾਮ੝ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਣੀ ॥ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਾਗਰ ਤਾਰਿ ਤਾਰਣ ਰਮ ਨਾਮ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਣੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ਚਲ ਚਿਤ ਵਿਤ ਭ੝ਰਮਾ ਭ੝ਰਮੰ ਜਗ੝ ਮੋਹ ਮਗਨ ਹਿਤੰ ॥ ਥਿਰ੝ ਨਾਮ੝ ਭਗਤਿ ਦਿੜੰ ਮਤੀ ਗ੝ਰ ਵਾਕਿ ਸਬਦ ਰਤੰ ॥੩॥

ਭਰਮਾਤਿ ਭਰਮ੝ ਨ ਚੂਕਈ ਜਗ੝ ਜਨਮਿ ਬਿਆਧਿ ਖਪੰ ॥ ਅਸਥਾਨ੝ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਹਕੇਵਲੰ ਸਤਿ ਮਤੀ ਨਾਮ ਤਪੰ ॥੪॥

ਇਹ੝ ਜਗ੝ ਮੋਹ ਹੇਤ ਬਿਆਪਿਤੰ ਦ੝ਖ੝ ਅਧਿਕ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣੰ ॥ ਭਜ੝ ਸਰਣਿ ਸਤਿਗ੝ਰ ਊਬਰਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ੝ ਰਿਦ ਰਮਣੰ ॥੫॥

ਗ੝ਰਮਤਿ ਨਿਹਚਲ ਮਨਿ ਮਨ੝ ਮਨੰ ਸਹਜ ਬੀਚਾਰੰ ॥ ਸੋ ਮਨ੝ ਨਿਰਮਲ੝ ਜਿਤ੝ ਸਾਚ੝ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਰਤਨ੝ ਸਾਰੰ ॥੬॥

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

The devotees worship the Lord in loving adoration. They thirst for the True Lord, with infinite affection. They tearfully beg and implore the Lord; in love and affection, their consciousness is at peace. ||1||

Chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord, O my mind, and take to His Sanctuary. The Lord's Name is the boat to cross over the world-ocean. Practice such a way of life. ||1||Pause||

O mind, even death wishes you well, when you remember the Lord through the Word of the Guru's Shabad. The intellect receives the treasure, the knowledge of reality and supreme bliss, by repeating the Lord's Name in the mind. ||2||

The fickle consciousness wanders around chasing after wealth; it is intoxicated with worldly love and emotional attachment. Devotion to the Naam is permanently implanted within the mind, when it is attuned to the Guru's Teachings and His Shabad. ||3||

Wandering around, doubt is not dispelled; afflicted by reincarnation, the world is being ruined. The Lord's eternal throne is free of this affliction; he is truly wise, who takes the Naam as his deep meditation. ||4||

This world is engrossed in attachment and transitory love; it suffers the terrible pains of birth and death. Run to the Sanctuary of the True Guru, chant the Lord's Name in your heart, and you shall swim across. ||5||

Following the Guru's Teaching, the mind becomes stable; the mind accepts it, and reflects upon it in peaceful poise. That mind is pure, which enshrines Truth within, and the most excellent jewel of spiritual wisdom. ||6||

By the Fear of God, and Love of God, and by devotion, man crosses over the terrifying world-ocean, focusing his consciousness on the Lord's Lotus Feet. The Name of the Lord, the most pure and sacred, is within my heart; this body is Your Sanctuary, Lord. ||7||

The waves of greed and avarice are subdued, by treasuring the Lord's Name in the mind. Subdue my mind, O Pure Immaculate Lord; says Nanak, I have entered Your Sanctuary. ||8||1||5||

ਪਦਅਰਥ: ਆਰਾਧਿਤੰ—ਆਰਾਧਿਆ (ਜਿਨ੝ਹਾਂ ਨੇ। ਸਚ੝—ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ। ਪਿਆਸ—ਤਾਂਘ। ਪਰਮ—ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚੀ, ਬਹ੝ਤ ਉੱਚੀ। ਹਿਤੰ—ਪ੝ਰੇਮ। ਭਾਇ ਹਿਤੰ—ਪ੝ਰੇਮ—ਭਾਵ ਵਿਚ।੧।

ਮਨ—ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਤਾਰਿ—ਬੇੜੀ, ਜਹਾਜ਼। ਰਮ ਨਾਮ—ਰਾਮ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ। ਕਰਣੀ— {करणोय} ਕਰਤੱਬ, ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨਾ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।

ਝ—ਹੇ! ਮਿਰਤ—ਮੌਤ, ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਉਪਰਾਮਤਾ। ਸ੝ਭ ਚਿੰਤੰ—ਸ਼੝ਭਚਿੰਤਕ, ਸ੝ਖਦਾਈ। ਰਮਣੰ—ਸਿਮਰਨ। ਤਤ੝—ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਮੂਲ—ਪ੝ਰਭੂ। ਗਿਆਨੰ—ਜਾਣ-ਪਛਾਣ, ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ। ਕਲਿਆਣ—ਸ੝ਖ, ਆਨੰਦ।੨।

ਚਲ ਚਿਤ—ਚਿੱਤ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਚਲ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ। ਵਿਤ—ਧਨ। ਭ੝ਰਮਾਭ੝ਰਮੰ—ਭਟਕਣਾ। ਮਗਨ—ਮਸਤ। ਗ੝ਰ ਵਾਕਿ—ਗ੝ਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ। ਦਿੜੰ—ਪੱਕੀ (ਕਰ ਲਈ ਹੈ। ਮਤੀ—ਅਕਲ, ਸਮਝ।੩।

ਭਰਮਾਤਿ—ਭਟਕਦਾ ਹੈ। ਭਰਮ੝—ਭਟਕਣ। ਜਨਮਿ—ਜਨਮ (-ਮਰਨ) ਵਿਚ। ਬਿਆਧਿ—ਰੋਗ। ਖਪੰ—ਖ਼੝ਆਰ ਹ੝ੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਨਿਹਕੇਵਲੰ—ਵਾਸਨਾ—ਰਹਿਤ। ਸਤਿ—ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ।੪।

ਬਿਆਪਿਤੰ—ਦਬਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ, ਦਬਾ ਹੇਠ। ਅਧਿਕ—ਬਹ੝ਤ। ਊਬਰਹਿ—ਤੂੰ ਬਚੇਂਗਾ।੫।

ਨਿਹਚਲ—ਅਟੱਲ। ਮਨਿ—ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰ। ਮਨੰ—ਮੰਨ ਜਾਇਗਾ, ਗਿੱਝ ਜਾਇਗਾ। ਸਹਜ—ਅਡੋਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ। ਜਿਤ੝—ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ। ਸਾਰੰ—ਸ੝ਰੇਸ਼ਟ।੬।

ਭੈ—(ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ) ਡਰ ਵਿਚ। ਭਾਇ—(ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ) ਪ੝ਰੇਮ ਵਿਚ। ਤਰ੝—ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ। ਭਵਜਲ੝—ਸੰਸਾਰ—ਸਮ੝ੰਦਰ। ਲਾਇ—ਜੋੜ। ਪਾਵਨ੝—ਪਵਿਤ੝ਰ। ਤਉ—ਤੇਰੀ।੭।

ਨਿਵਾਰਣੰ—ਦੂਰ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਸਮਰੱਥ। ਰਾਸਿ—ਸਰਮਾਇਆ। ਮਨੰ—ਮਨ ਵਿਚ। ਨਿਰੰਜਨਾ—ਹੇ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ! ਹੇ ਮਾਇਆ—ਰਹਿਤ ਪ੝ਰਭੂ!।੮।

ਅਰਥ: ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਓਟ ਫੜ। ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਬਣਾ। ਇਹ ਨਾਮ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮ੝ੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾਣ ਲਈ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਹੈ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।

ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨ੝ੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੝ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੝ਰੇਮ ਨਾਲ ਆਰਾਧਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੝ਰਭੂ-ਪ੝ਰੇਮ ਦੀ ਤੀਬਰ ਖਿੱਚ ਬਣੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਪ੝ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਹੀ) ਹਾੜੇ-ਤਰਲੇ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਬੇਨਤੀਆਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਪ੝ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪ੝ਰੇਮ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ (ਮਗਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ) ਤੇ ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ।੧।

ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਗ੝ਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ (ਟਿਕ ਕੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰ, ਤੇ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਉਪਰਾਮ ਹੋ), ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਮੌਤ (ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਸ੝ਖਦਾਈ ਹੈ। ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨ੝ੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਜਗਤ-ਮੂਲ ਪ੝ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸ੝ਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਪ੝ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।੨।

(ਦ੝ਨੀਆ ਦਾ) ਧਨ (ਮਨ੝ੱਖ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਚਲ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਪਰ) ਜਗਤ (ਇਸ ਧਨ ਦੇ) ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਪ੝ਰੇਮ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਭਗਤ (ਆਪਣੀ) ਸਮਝ ਵਿਚ (ਇਹ ਨਿਸਚਾ) ਪੱਕਾ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਹੀ) ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਗ੝ਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਤੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।੩।

ਜਗਤ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ) ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਰੋਗ ਵਿਚ ਖ਼੝ਆਰ ਹ੝ੰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਭਟਕਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਦੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਾਲੀ) ਭਟਕਣਾ ਮ੝ੱਕਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ। ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਹੀ ਝਸਾ ਥਾਂ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ ਉਪਰਾਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਤਪ ਹੀ ਸਹੀ ਸਮਝ ਹੈ।੪।

ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਬਹ੝ਤ ਦ੝ੱਖ ਲੱਗਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਤੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਿਮਰ, ਸਤਿਗ੝ਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਉ, (ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ) ਤੂੰ (ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚ ਸਕੇਂਗਾ।੫।

ਜੋ ਮਨ੝ੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਗ੝ਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਪੱਕੇ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਅਡੋਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਗਿੱਝ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਇਹ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਲੋਂ ਹਟ ਕੇ ਪ੝ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਇਕਾਗ੝ਰਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹੇ। ਜਿਸ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੝ਰਭੂ ਟਿਕ ਜਾਝ ਉਹ ਮਨ ਪਵਿਤ੝ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੝ਰਭੂ-ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ ਸ੝ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਰਤਨ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।੬।

ਹੇ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਮਨ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਵਿਚ ਰਹ੝, ਪ੝ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰਹ੝, ਪ੝ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰ, ਪ੝ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸ੝ਰਤਿ ਜੋੜ, ਇਸ ਤਰ੝ਹਾਂ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮ੝ੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ। (ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਪਵਿਤ੝ਰ ਨਾਮ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ (ਰੱਖ ਤੇ ਪ੝ਰਭੂ ਅੱਗੇ ਇਉਂ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰ-ਹੇ ਪ੝ਰਭੂ!) ਮੇਰਾ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਇਆ ਹਾਂ)।੭।

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਸਰਮਾਇਆ ਹੈ, ਇਸ) ਸਰਮਾਝ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸਾਂਭ ਕੇ ਰੱਖ, ਇਹ ਲੱਬ ਤੇ ਲੋਭ ਦੀਆਂ ਲਹਿਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਸਮਰੱਥ ਹੈ। ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ (ਲਬ ਲੋਭ ਵਲੋਂ) ਕਾਬੂ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਰੱਖ, ਤੇ ਆਖ-ਹੇ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ! ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਇਆ ਹਾਂ।੮।੧।੫।

ਨੋਟ: ਪਹਿਲੀਆਂ ੪ ਅਸ਼ਟਪਦੀਆਂ "ਘਰ੝ ੧" ਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ। ਇਹ ਅਸ਼ਟਪਦੀ "ਘਰ੝ ੪" ਦੀ ਹੈ। ਅਖ਼ੀਰਲੇ ਅੰਕ ੧ ਦਾ ਇਹੀ ਭਾਵ ਹੈ। ਅੰਕ ੫ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਗ੝ਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀਆਂ ਕ੝ੱਲ ਪੰਜ ਅਸ਼ਟਪਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
