Basati, Basatia, Basaati or Basanti

Basati , Basatia, Basaati or Basanti ( ਬਸਾਤੀ or ਬਸਾਂਤੀ ) is a Gotra or Surname found in Jat / Jatt Sikh Community in Punjab and Jaat community of Haryana, prominently in Eastern Punjab. People with this surname are primarily found in Eastern Districts of Punjab i.e. Roopnagar (Ropar), S.A.S Nagar (Mohali), Patiala, Ludhiana and Fatehgarh Sahib. Ancestry of Basaati surname can be found in Villages such as, Guno Majra, Taprian, Sil, Kambala, Khuni Majra of District S.A.S Nagar (Mohali), Village Ror Majra, Asman Pur, Makrona Khurd, Makrona Kallan of District Ropar, Village Basant Pura, Chandu Majra of District Patiala, and Muskabad, Dayalpura, Taprian and many more Villages of Ludhiana and some villages of Fatehgarh Sahib, where majority of inhabitants are Basaatis. They are living in villages Luana and Basatian Wala (Yamunagar), Maanu Majra and Meerpur (Ambala) in Haryana. Moreover, there is a village named Bsahatu in District Paschami bhoom of Jharkhand where Basaatis live in majority.

Basaatis were dwelling in republic known as Vasati in Mahabharata period. They were with Kauravas in Mahabharata war on day one and two. Basaatis figure in the tribute list Mahabharata (II.48.14). They sided with the Kauravas (VI.47.14, VI. 18.12) and came from the Mula pass in Baluchistan or somewhere in Makran.

In addition to Indian states of Punjab and Haryana, the surname Basaati is also found in some parts of Pakistan and Iran.
