Agampur is a village, about two km from Anandpur Sahib, in which there are two Gurdwaras:

  • Holgarh Gurdwara. It was here that Guru Gobind Singh built Holgarh fort (fort of color). The hill armies attacked the fort on August 31, 1700. In this battle Bhai Bagh Singh, son of Bhai Rai Singh (brother of Bhai Mani Singh), Bhai Gharbara Singh, son of Bhai Nanu Singh Dilwali and others embraced martyrdom.
  • Gurdwara Mata Jit Kaur Ji, the wife of Guru Gobind Singh Sahib, has been built in the memory of Mata Jit Kaur Ji who was cremated here on December 6, 1700. During the times of the Gurus, most of the dead bodies of the residents of Chakk Nanaki and Anandpur Sahib were cremated here.

AGAMPUR or AGAMPURA, lit. unapproachable or inaccessible city (Skt. agamya plus pur or pura). The word appears in one of the hymns of Guru Nanak in Asa measure where it is used to signify God`s abode or the ultimate state or stage of spiritual enlightenment and bliss. Another term used synonymously in the same hymn is nijaghar, lit. one`s own real home signifying the ultimate sphere of jivatma. The relevant stanza first raises the question: Tell me how the city unapproachable is reached," followed by the answer, "By discarding such measures as Japu (mechanical repetition of God`s name), tapu (bodily mortification) and hath nigrahi (forced control of the senses)." Realizing the Guru`s Word in practice is prescibed as the right path to agampur (GG, 436).
