Islam And Guru Granth Sahib

Some Muslims try to lure Sikhs in Islam by saying SGGS has praised Islam and Muslims so we should join their 'true' religion. Gurus gave suggestions to Muslims about how to be a better human, they weren't telling Sikhs to leave Sikhi for Islam. They praised only few Muslims because they were excellent human beings and didn't believe in considering themselves as superior. Most Sikhs only know that Sikhi accepts every religion (which isn't right in the first place as Sikhi only accepts Naam Simran), so they are afraid to reply and often end up contradicting. Too much leniency will only go against us. But this post will clear our stance towards Islam and related topics.

There is a section at Ang 1083-84 which focuses on Islam. The topic is already going to be lengthy so I am skipping it, but this post does contain some references. Muslims are free to disagree.

  • Quran

Ang 145-

By His Power the Vedas and the Puranas exist, and the Holy Scriptures of the Jewish, Christian and Islamic religions. By His Power all deliberations exist.

Ang 397-

He is beyond the world of the Vedas, the Koran and the Bible.

he Supreme King of Nanak is immanent and manifest. ||4||3||105||

According to Sikhi, reading religious books is good but they are not enough specially if one does not contemplate on them or avoids Naam Simran.

Ang 1083-

Practice within your heart the teachings of the Koran and the Bible.

Restrain the ten sensory organs from straying into evil.

Tie up the five demons of desire with faith, charity and contentment, and you shall be acceptable. ||4||

Ang 477-

Give up your holy books, and remember the Lord, you fool, and stop oppressing others so badly.

Kabeer has grasped hold of the Lord's Support, and the Muslims have utterly failed. ||4||8||

Ang 1153-

The six Shastras are diseased, as are the many who follow the different religious orders.

What can the poor Vedas and Bibles do? People do not understand the One and Only Lord. ||6||

ਕਤੇਬ is used for Abrahamic books, not only bible.

Ang 329-

Says Kabeer, those who remain detached from the Vedas,

The Koran and the Bible are the best riders. ||3||31||

Kabeer ji mentions that if a religious book is used to oppress others one is better without them.

Ang 1350-

Do not say that the Vedas, the Bible and the Koran are false. Those who do not contemplate them are false.

This line doesn't mean a religious book is true by default. Contemplating means deep reflection. One has to think whether a religious book goes against common sense, morales or humanity.

There are few more references about Abrahamic books similar to these.

  • Allah

The word Allah predates Islam and was used for supreme deity by polytheists. Similarly, Khuda is a Persian word which also predates Islam and was used for Ahura Mazda, God in Zoroastrianism. Punjab was Muslim majority, so the Islamic vocabulary was common. Punjab was also a transitional region between middle east, central Asia and mainland India and had a very rich mixed culture. In Sikhi, Allah or Khuda is an inclusive God, there is no need to have a faith in the Gurus to get Mukti (a Sikh must have faith thou) compared to Islam where he is exclusive and faith in Prophet Muhammad (& previous ones) is necessary to reach Jannah.

In Islam:

The first pillar of Islam is Shahadah which is:

There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of God.

Quran:

3.31-

Say, ˹O Prophet, ˺ “If you ˹sincerely˺ love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive your sins. For Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

3.32-

Say, ˹O Prophet, ˺ “Obey Allah and His Messenger.” If they still turn away, then truly Allah does not like the disbelievers.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir for the verses 3.31,32:

Allah's Love is Attained by Following the Messenger.

This honorable Ayah judges against those who claim to love Allah, yet do not follow the way of Muhammad. Such people are not true in their claim until they follow the Shari`ah (Law) of Muhammad and his religion in all his statements, actions and conditions. It is recorded in the Sahih that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,

(Whoever commits an act that does not conform with our matter (religion), then it will be rejected of him.)

This is why Allah said here,

(Say (O Muhammad to mankind): "If you (really) love Allah, then follow me, Allah will love you...") meaning, what you will earn is much more than what you sought in loving Him, for Allah will love you. Al-Hasan Al-Basri and several scholars among the Salaf commented, "Some people claimed that they love Allah. So, Allah tested them with this Ayah.

(Say (O Muhammad to mankind): "If you (really) love Allah, then follow me, Allah will love you..."). "

Allah then said,

("And forgive you your sins. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.") meaning, by your following the Messenger, you will earn all this with the blessing of his mission. Allah next commands everyone,

(Say: "Obey Allah and the Messenger." But if they turn away) by defying the Prophet)

(Then Allah does not like the disbelievers.) thus, testifying that defiance of the Messenger's way constitutes Kufr. Indeed, Allah does not like whoever does this, even if he claims that he loves Allah and seeks a means of approach to Him, unless, and until, he follows the unlettered Prophet, the Final Messenger from Allah to the two creations: mankind and the Jinn. This is the Prophet who, if the previous Prophets and mighty Messengers were to have been alive during his time, they would have no choice but to follow, obey him, and to abide by his Law. We will mention this fact when we explain the Ayah,

(And (remember) when Allah took the Covenant of the Prophets) 3:81, Allah willing.

4.80-

Whoever obeys the Messenger has truly obeyed Allah. But whoever turns away, then ˹know that˺ We have not sent you ˹O Prophet˺ as a keeper over them.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir for the verses 4.80:

Obeying the Messenger ﷺ is Obeying Allah.

Allah states that whoever obeys His servant and Messenger, Muhammad ﷺ , obeys Allah; and whoever disobeys him, disobeys Allah. Verily, whatever the Messenger ﷺ utters is not of his own desire, but a revelation inspired to him. Ibn Abi Hatim recorded that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,

(Whoever obeys me, obeys Allah; and whoever disobeys me, disobeys Allah. Whoever obeys the Amir (leader, ruler), obeys me; and whoever disobeys the Amir, disobeys me.) This Hadith was recorded in the Two Sahihs. Allah's statement,

(But he who turns away, then We have not sent you as a watcher over them.) means, do not worry about him. Your job is only to convey, and whoever obeys you, he will acquire happiness and success and you will gain a similar reward to that he earns. As for the one who turns away from you, he will gain failure and loss and you will not carry a burden because of what he does. A Hadith states,

(Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger, will acquire guidance; and whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger, will only harm himself.)

There are many but they are context specific such as war, loot, interest, etc. so I am skipping them.

And when, O Nanak, he is merciful to all beings, only then shall he be called a Muslim. ||1||

Wrong translations of few words as words like Prophet and Muhammad don't appear in original writing.

Correct translation:

  • 1. First consider religion as sweet (because believing in a God is necessary in Sikhi) then......
  • 2. Become a muslim by leading the religion / community let......

This verse is most often used to lure Sikhs. Gurus never told Sikhs to became Muslims. Guru here is telling Muslims to leave selfishness as some of their practices went against islam:

-x-x-x

Grave worship-

In Islam: not allowed.

Bukhari 435-

(Google translate) Abu Al-Yaman told us, he said, Shuaib told us, on the authority of Al-Zuhri, Ubayd Allah ibn Abdullah ibn Utbah informed me, that Aisha and Abdullah ibn Abbas, they said, When the last moment of the life of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) came he started putting his 'Khamisa' on his face and when he felt hot and short of breath he took it off his face and said, "May Allah curse the Jews and Christians for they built the places of worship at the graves of their Prophets." The Prophet (ﷺ) was warning (Muslims) of what those had done.

Ibn Majah 745-

(Google translate) Muhammad bin Yahya told us, Yazid bin Harun told us, Sufyan told us, on the authority of Amr bin Yahya, on the authority of his father, and Hammad bin Salamah, on the authority of Amr Ibn Yahya, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Abu Sa'Id al-Khudri, he said: "The Messenger of Allah said: 'All the earth is a mosque, except for graveyards and Hammam(bathroom)."

There are more but too many to write here.

In Sikhi: Muslims were worshipping graves.

Ang 1190-

You fool! Visiting graves and cremation grounds is not Yoga. ||9||

Tav Prasad Saviye-

Some fool worships the idols and someone goes to worship the dead.

Praying only is mosque-

In Islam: allowed anywhere except few places

Ibn Majha 745 (above)

In Sikhi: when Muslims were only remembering Allah in mosque.

Ang 1349-

If the Lord Allah lives only in the mosque, then to whom does the rest of the world belong?

According to the Hindus, the Lord's Name abides in the idol, but there is no truth in either of these claims. ||1||

O Allah, O Raam, I live by Your Name.

Please show mercy to me, O Master. ||1||Pause||

Converted against will-

In Islam: Although conversion against will is normal in Islamic history, but they want total submission.

Quran:

49.14-

˹Some of˺ the nomadic Arabs say, “We believe.” Say, ˹O Prophet, ˺ “You have not believed. But say, ‘We have submitted,’ for faith has not yet entered your hearts. But if you obey Allah and His Messenger ˹wholeheartedly˺, He will not discount anything from ˹the reward of˺ your deeds. Allah is truly All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

Tafsir Ibn Kathir for the verses 49.14:

There is a Difference between a Believer and a Muslim.

Allah chastises the Bedouins who, when they embraced Islam, claimed for themselves the grade of faithful believers. However, Faith had not yet firmly entered their hearts.

(The Bedouins say: "We believe." Say: "You do not believe, but say, `We have submitted,' for Faith has not yet entered your hearts...") This honorable Ayah provides proof that Faith is a higher grade than Islam, according to the scholars of the Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jama`ah. This is also demonstrated in the Hadith of Jibril, peace be upon him, when he questioned the Prophet about Islam, then Iman then Ihsan. Thus moving the general matter to one more specific, then even more specific. Imam Ahmad recorded that `Amir bin Sa`d bin Abi Waqqas said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave (something to) some men and did not give one of them. Sa`d said, `O Allah's Messenger, you gave to so-and-so and so-and-so. However, you gave nothing to so-and-so, even though he is a believer.' The Prophet said

(Or say, a Muslim.) Sa`d repeated his statement thrice each time the Prophet answered,

(Or say, a Muslim.) The Prophet then said,

(I might give some men and give nothing to others, even though the latter are dearer to me than the former. I do not give them things for fear that they might be thrown on their faces in the Fire.)" This Hadith is recorded in the Two Sahihs. Therefore, the Prophet made a distinction between the grade of believer and the grade of Muslim, indicating that Iman is a more exclusive grade than Islam. I mentioned this subject in detail supported by evidence, in the beginning of the explanation of the chapter on Iman in Sahih Al-Bukhari, all praise is due to Allah and all the favors are from Him. So this proves that the bedouins whom the Ayah mentioned were not hypocrites, rather they were Muslims in whose hearts Faith was not yet firmly established. They claimed a higher grade for themselves than the grade that they earned, and they were taught a lesson as a consequence. This meaning agrees with the meaning given by Ibn `Abbas, Ibrahim An-Nakha`i, Qatadah and that preferred by Ibn Jarir. These bedouins were taught a lesson. (Bukhari 27)

In Sikhi: Although Ibn Kathir thinks they were not hypocrites, situation was something else in subcontinent.

Corrected: How can he escape hell if he doesn't have God in his mind like Prophet.

Commentaries mentions that "a Muslim is in the conversation, so the word Guru is replaced with Prophet". A Bani is Bani whether Gurus uttered it for Sikhs or non-Sikhs. Sukhmani Sahib contains some Pauris which guide Hindus towards right path.

One who realizes the Prophet attains heaven. Azraa-eel, the Messenger of Death, does not cast him into hell. ||11||

Incorrect translation. There is no word for Prophet here but Pir. Sikhi focuses on conglomeration of saints and Sufi Islam was also more prevalent in Punjab and focused on Pirs. They had similar approach.

There are few more references for Prophets but there are either similar to first one above [ 1.) ] or wrong translations of some words in english.

  • Muslims and their practices

Not only Sikhi is against almost all major Islamic practices such as circumcision, praying towards mecca, halal, fasting, etc. but also have its own definitions. Muslims are free to disgree, but this is what we believe one with a Musal-Iman is.

There are more similar to these but i am keeping it short. Ang 1083-84 focuses on Islam.

  • Muslim authors in SGGS

SGGS contains writing of authors whom people mistakenly consider as muslims, although their writings may also exist outside of SGGS, we should only consider what is written in SGGS. Were they really Muslims? Lets see:

According to Quran & Hadith, a Muslim is:

Quran 2.136-

Say, ˹O believers, ˺ “We believe in Allah and what has been revealed to us; and what was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and his descendants; and what was given to Moses, Jesus, and other prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them. And to Allah we all submit.”

Bukhari 8-

Ubayd Allah ibn Musa told us, he said, Hanzalah ibn Abi Sufyan informed us, on the authority of Ikrimah ibn Khalid, on the authority of Ibn Umar - may God be pleased with them both - he said:

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: Islam is based on (the following) five (principles):

To testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and Muhammad is Allah's Messenger (ﷺ).

To offer the (compulsory congregational) prayers dutifully and perfectly.

To pay Zakat (i.e. obligatory charity) .

To perform Hajj. (i.e. Pilgrimage to Mecca).

To observe fast during the month of Ramadan.

There are few more definations but these should be enough.

Authors:

1.) Bhagat Kabeer- According to his own writing, he was born in Hindu family.

2.) Bhagat Sadhna- There is a small composition of Bhagat Sadhna in SGGS which does not contains anything related to Islam but a story of Vishnu and concept of karma. He wasn't Muslim either as the terminoloies in his writing are Indic and not islamic. He was born in a Hindu family.

3.) Bhagat Bhikhan- Two of his compositions are included in SGGS where his writing style is very similar to Bhakti saints as he refers to God as Har, Ram, talks about importance of a Guru and concept of Mukti. He was born in a Hindu family.

4.) Satta and Balvand- Born in muslim family, these two Gursikh brothers belonged to Mirasi caste. Mirasis are traditional singers and dancers. Satta and Balvand had Islamic elements in their life which some historian mention but their writings only praise the Sikh Gurus and nobody else. So not Muslims either.

5.) Bhagat Fareed- As Sufism is heavily influenced by Indic philosophies, Bhagat Fareed talks about serving Guru and Pirs, Sadh Sangat- Indian conglomeration of saints, also uses Indian words for God. Does not mention Prophet but mentions namaz but Guru has explained the namaz in Ang 141 (above), also some of his other points were explained by Gurus below his writings, so that Sikhs don't get confused because Sikhs and Muslims have different point of view regarding this Sufi Muslim. In Sufi belief, a lot of miraculous stories are connected with Baba Fareed but SGGS does not support the concept of showing miracles. There have been bigger and more popular Sufi saints but Sikhi only goes hand in hand with Baba Fareed's philosophy so his writings were included. He talks about speaking sweetly as a chanting mantra to reach God, now you cannot reach Allah by speaking sweetly alone as chanting mantra means worshipping God other than Allah which is Kufr so Baba Fareed wasn't Muslim either.

Positive muslim figures in Sikh history used to bow down to the Gurus, that is shirk by default and they are not muslims by Islamic defination.

"Sikhi is mix of Islam & Hinduism" or "Sikhi copied from Islam" are different topics and can be easily debunked. Islam itself took elements from Judaism & Paganism & my last post was about Sikhi not being Hinduism.

I don't support silly debates but you should be armed to the teeth. I believe this should be enough to clear our stand. Don't argue with a Dawah guy in the first place as they are idiots but if they act like they know Sikhi more than you, BITE THEM!!
