AMRITSAR: In a case of "honour killing" (karo-kari), family members allegedly shot dead their newly wed daughter and her husband in Tarn Taran district,

days after the Punjab and Haryana high court directed the police to provide security to the couple, which was not given.

Police on Monday said the accused identified as Kabul Singh, father of the girl along with his son Rajbir Singh and two cousins Jatinder Singh and Sarmail Singh, allegedly shot dead the couple on Sunday in full view of the public.

The couple Balkar Singh (30) and Ravinder Pal Kaur (19) had solemnized their marriage in court on January 1 against the will of the girl’s parents.

The assailants chased Balkar Singh who was buying edibles and shot him dead in full public view, police said. After killing Balkar Singh, the assailants reached his house to kill his bride Ravinder Pal Kaur, who ran towards the fields but assailants chased her and fired at her indiscriminately, killing her on the spot.

Raids were being carried out in various places to arrest the alleged killers.
