ਸਖੀ ਬਸੈ ਮਸਕੀਨੀਆ ਆਪ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਤਲੇ ॥ |
Sukẖī basai maskīnī▫ĝ ĝp nivĝr ṯale. |
The humble beings abide in peace; subduing egotism, they are meek. |
ਬਡੇ ਬਡੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਗਰਬਿ ਗਲੇ ॥੧॥ |
Bade bade ahaʼnkĝrī▫ĝ Nĝnak garab gale. ((1)) |
The very proud and arrogant persons, O Nanak, are consumed by their own pride. ((1)) |

ਜਿਸ ਕੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਾਜ ਅਭਿਮਾਨ ॥ |
Jis kai anṯar rĝj abẖimĝn. |
One who has the pride of power within, |
ਸੋ ਨਰਕਪਾਤੀ ਹੋਵਤ ਸਆਨ ॥ |
So narakpĝṯī hovaṯ su▫ĝn. |
shall dwell in hell, and become a dog. |
ਜੋ ਜਾਨੈ ਮੈ ਜੋਬਨਵੰਤ ॥ |
Jo jĝnai mai jobanvanṯ. |
One who deems himself to have the beauty of youth, |
ਸੋ ਹੋਵਤ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਕਾ ਜੰਤ ॥ |
So hovaṯ bistĝ kĝ janṯ. |
shall become a maggot in manure. |
ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਕਰਮਵੰਤ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥ |
Āpas ka▫o karamvanṯ kahĝvai. |
One who claims to act virtuously, |
ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਬਹ ਜੋਨਿ ਭਰਮਾਵੈ ॥ |
Janam marai baho jon bẖarmĝvai. |
shall live and die, wandering through countless reincarnations. |
ਧਨ ਭੂਮਿ ਕਾ ਜੋ ਕਰੈ ਗਮਾਨ ॥ |
Ḏẖan bẖūm kĝ jo karai gumĝn. |
One who takes pride in wealth and lands |
ਸੋ ਮੂਰਖ ਅੰਧਾ ਅਗਿਆਨ ॥ |
So mūrakẖ anḝẖĝ agi▫ĝn. |
is a fool, blind and ignorant. |
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਿਸ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਗਰੀਬੀ ਬਸਾਵੈ ॥ |
Kar kirpĝ jis kai hirḝai garībī basĝvai. |
One whose heart is mercifully blessed with abiding humility, |
ਨਾਨਕ ਈਹਾ ਮਕਤ ਆਗੈ ਸਖ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ |
Nĝnak īhĝ mukaṯ ĝgai sukẖ pĝvai. ((1)) |
O Nanak, is liberated here, and obtains peace hereafter. ((1)) |
ਧਨਵੰਤਾ ਹੋਇ ਕਰਿ ਗਰਬਾਵੈ ॥ |
Ḏẖanvanṯĝ ho▫e kar garbĝvai. |
One who becomes wealthy and takes pride in it - |
ਤਰਿਣ ਸਮਾਨਿ ਕਛ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਜਾਵੈ ॥ |
Ŧariṇ samĝn kacẖẖ sang na jĝvai. |
not even a piece of straw shall go along with him. |
ਬਹ ਲਸਕਰ ਮਾਨਖ ਊਪਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਆਸ ॥ |
Baho laskar mĝnukẖ ūpar kare ĝs. |
He may place his hopes on a large army of men, |
ਪਲ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਹੋਇ ਬਿਨਾਸ ॥ |
Pal bẖīṯar ṯĝ kĝ ho▫e binĝs. |
but he shall vanish in an instant. |
ਸਭ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਜਾਨੈ ਬਲਵੰਤ ॥ |
Sabẖ ṯe ĝp jĝnai balvanṯ. |
One who deems himself to be the strongest of all, |
ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਜਾਇ ਭਸਮੰਤ ॥ |
Kẖin mėh ho▫e jĝ▫e bẖasmanṯ. |
in an instant, shall be reduced to ashes. |
ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਬਦੈ ਆਪਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥ |
Kisai na baḝai ĝp ahaʼnkĝrī. |
One who thinks of no one else except his own prideful self - |
ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਤਿਸ ਕਰੇ ਖਆਰੀ ॥ |
Ḏẖaram rĝ▫e ṯis kare kẖu▫ĝrī. |
the Righteous Judge of Dharma shall expose his disgrace. |
ਗਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਮਿਟੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨ ॥ |
Gur parsĝḝ jĝ kĝ mitai abẖimĝn. |
One who, by Guru's Grace, eliminates his ego, |
ਸੋ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਰਵਾਨ ॥੨॥ |
So jan Nĝnak ḝargėh parvĝn. ((2)) |
O Nanak, becomes acceptable in the Court of the Lord. ((2)) |
ਕੋਟਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਹਉ ਧਾਰੇ ॥ |
Kot karam karai ha▫o ḝẖĝre. |
If someone does millions of good deeds, while acting in ego, |
ਸਰਮ ਪਾਵੈ ਸਗਲੇ ਬਿਰਥਾਰੇ ॥ |
Saram pĝvai sagle birthĝre. |
he shall incur only trouble; all this is in vain. |
ਅਨਿਕ ਤਪਸਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ॥ |
Anik ṯapasi▫ĝ kare ahaʼnkĝr. |
If someone performs great penance, while acting in selfishness and conceit, |
ਨਰਕ ਸਰਗ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਅਵਤਾਰ ॥ |
Narak surag fir fir avṯĝr. |
he shall be reincarnated into heaven and hell, over and over again. |
ਅਨਿਕ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਆਤਮ ਨਹੀ ਦਰਵੈ ॥ |
Anik jaṯan kar ĝṯam nahī ḝarvai. |
He makes all sorts of efforts, but his soul is still not softened - |
ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਕਹ ਕੈਸੇ ਗਵੈ ॥ |
Har ḝargėh kaho kaise gavai. |
how can he go to the Court of the Lord? |
ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਜੋ ਭਲਾ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥ |
Āpas ka▫o jo bẖalĝ kahĝvai. |
One who calls himself good - |
ਤਿਸਹਿ ਭਲਾਈ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥ |
Ŧisėh bẖalĝ▫ī nikat na ĝvai. |
goodness shall not draw near him. |
ਸਰਬ ਕੀ ਰੇਨ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਮਨ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
Sarab kī ren jĝ kĝ man ho▫e. |
One whose mind is the dust of all - |
ਕਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥ |
Kaho Nĝnak ṯĝ kī nirmal so▫e. ((3)) |
says Nanak, his reputation is spotlessly pure. ((3)) |
ਜਬ ਲਗ ਜਾਨੈ ਮਝ ਤੇ ਕਛ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
Jab lag jĝnai mujẖ ṯe kacẖẖ ho▫e. |
As long as someone thinks that he is the one who acts, |
ਤਬ ਇਸ ਕਉ ਸਖ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥ |
Ŧab is ka▫o sukẖ nĝhī ko▫e. |
he shall have no peace. |
ਜਬ ਇਹ ਜਾਨੈ ਮੈ ਕਿਛ ਕਰਤਾ ॥ |
Jab ih jĝnai mai kicẖẖ karṯĝ. |
As long as this mortal thinks that he is the one who does things, |
ਤਬ ਲਗ ਗਰਭ ਜੋਨਿ ਮਹਿ ਫਿਰਤਾ ॥ |
Ŧab lag garabẖ jon mėh firṯĝ. |
he shall wander in reincarnation through the womb. |
ਜਬ ਧਾਰੈ ਕੋਊ ਬੈਰੀ ਮੀਤ ॥ |
Jab ḝẖĝrai ko▫ū bairī mīṯ. |
As long as he considers one an enemy, and another a friend, |
ਤਬ ਲਗ ਨਿਹਚਲ ਨਾਹੀ ਚੀਤ ॥ |
Ŧab lag nihcẖal nĝhī cẖīṯ. |
his mind shall not come to rest. |
ਜਬ ਲਗ ਮੋਹ ਮਗਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਾਇ ॥ |
Jab lag moh magan sang mĝ▫e. |
As long as he is intoxicated with attachment to Maya, |
ਤਬ ਲਗ ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਦੇਇ ਸਜਾਇ ॥ |
Ŧab lag ḝẖaram rĝ▫e ḝe▫e sajĝ▫e. |
the Righteous Judge shall punish him. |
ਪਰਭ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਤੂਟੈ ॥ |
Parabẖ kirpĝ ṯe banḝẖan ṯūtai. |
By God's Grace, his bonds are shattered; |
ਗਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉ ਛੂਟੈ ॥੪॥ |
Gur parsĝḝ Nĝnak ha▫o cẖẖūtai. ((4)) |
by Guru's Grace, O Nanak, his ego is eliminated. ((4)) |
ਸਹਸ ਖਟੇ ਲਖ ਕਉ ਉਠਿ ਧਾਵੈ ॥ |
Sahas kẖate lakẖ ka▫o uṯẖ ḝẖĝvai. |
Earning a thousand, he runs after a hundred thousand. |
ਤਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ |
Ŧaripaṯ na ĝvai mĝ▫i▫ĝ pĝcẖẖai pĝvai. |
Satisfaction is not obtained by chasing after Maya. |
ਅਨਿਕ ਭੋਗ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਕੇ ਕਰੈ ॥ |
Anik bẖog bikẖi▫ĝ ke karai. |
He may enjoy all sorts of corrupt pleasures, |
ਨਹ ਤਰਿਪਤਾਵੈ ਖਪਿ ਖਪਿ ਮਰੈ ॥ |
Nah ṯaripṯĝvai kẖap kẖap marai. |
but he is still not satisfied; he indulges again and again, wearing himself out, until he dies. |
ਬਿਨਾ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਊ ਰਾਜੈ ॥ |
Binĝ sanṯokẖ nahī ko▫ū rĝjai. |
Without contentment, no one is satisfied. |
ਸਪਨ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਬਰਿਥੇ ਸਭ ਕਾਜੈ ॥ |
Supan manorath barithe sabẖ kĝjai. |
Like the objects in a dream, all his efforts are in vain. |
ਨਾਮ ਰੰਗਿ ਸਰਬ ਸਖ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
Nĝm rang sarab sukẖ ho▫e. |
Through the love of the Naam, all peace is obtained. |
ਬਡਭਾਗੀ ਕਿਸੈ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
Badbẖĝgī kisai parĝpaṯ ho▫e. |
Only a few obtain this, by great good fortune. |
ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ॥ |
Karan karĝvan ĝpe ĝp. |
He Himself is Himself the Cause of causes. |
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਪਿ ॥੫॥ |
Saḝĝ saḝĝ Nĝnak har jĝp. ((5)) |
Forever and ever, O Nanak, chant the Lord's Name. ((5)) |
ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨ ਕਰਨੈਹਾਰ ॥ |
Karan karĝvan karnaihĝr. |
The Doer, the Cause of causes, is the Creator Lord. |
ਇਸ ਕੈ ਹਾਥਿ ਕਹਾ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥ |
Is kai hĝth kahĝ bīcẖĝr. |
What deliberations are in the hands of mortal beings? |
ਜੈਸੀ ਦਰਿਸਟਿ ਕਰੇ ਤੈਸਾ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
Jaisī ḝarisat kare ṯaisĝ ho▫e. |
As God casts His Glance of Grace, they come to be. |
ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਆਪਿ ਪਰਭ ਸੋਇ ॥ |
Āpe ĝp ĝp parabẖ so▫e. |
God Himself, of Himself, is unto Himself. |
ਜੋ ਕਿਛ ਕੀਨੋ ਸ ਅਪਨੈ ਰੰਗਿ ॥ |
Jo kicẖẖ kīno so apnai rang. |
Whatever He created, was by His Own Pleasure. |
ਸਭ ਤੇ ਦੂਰਿ ਸਭਹੂ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ॥ |
Sabẖ ṯe ḝūr sabẖhū kai sang. |
He is far from all, and yet with all. |
ਬੂਝੈ ਦੇਖੈ ਕਰੈ ਬਿਬੇਕ ॥ |
Būjẖai ḝekẖai karai bibek. |
He understands, He sees, and He passes judgment. |
ਆਪਹਿ ਝਕ ਆਪਹਿ ਅਨੇਕ ॥ |
Āpėh ek ĝpėh anek. |
He Himself is the One, and He Himself is the many. |
ਮਰੈ ਨ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਆਵੈ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
Marai na binsai ĝvai na jĝ▫e. |
He does not die or perish; He does not come or go. |
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੬॥ |
Nĝnak saḝ hī rahi▫ĝ samĝ▫e. ((6)) |
O Nanak, He remains forever All-pervading. ((6)) |
ਆਪਿ ਉਪਦੇਸੈ ਸਮਝੈ ਆਪਿ ॥ |
Āp upḝesai samjẖai ĝp. |
He Himself instructs, and He Himself learns. |
ਆਪੇ ਰਚਿਆ ਸਭ ਕੈ ਸਾਥਿ ॥ |
Āpe racẖi▫ĝ sabẖ kai sĝth. |
He Himself mingles with all. |
ਆਪਿ ਕੀਨੋ ਆਪਨ ਬਿਸਥਾਰ ॥ |
Āp kīno ĝpan bisthĝr. |
He Himself created His own expanse. |
ਸਭ ਕਛ ਉਸ ਕਾ ਓਹ ਕਰਨੈਹਾਰ ॥ |
Sabẖ kacẖẖ us kĝ oh karnaihĝr. |
All things are His; He is the Creator. |
ਉਸ ਤੇ ਭਿੰਨ ਕਹਹ ਕਿਛ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
Us ṯe bẖinn kahhu kicẖẖ ho▫e. |
Without Him, what could be done? |
ਥਾਨ ਥਨੰਤਰਿ ਝਕੈ ਸੋਇ ॥ |
Thĝn thananṯar ekai so▫e. |
In the spaces and interspaces, He is the One. |
ਅਪਨੇ ਚਲਿਤ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰ ॥ |
Apune cẖaliṯ ĝp karṇaihĝr. |
In His own play, He Himself is the Actor. |
ਕਉਤਕ ਕਰੈ ਰੰਗ ਆਪਾਰ ॥ |
Ka▫uṯak karai rang ĝpĝr. |
He produces His plays with infinite variety. |
ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਮਨ ਅਪਨੇ ਮਾਹਿ ॥ |
Man mėh ĝp man apune mĝhi. |
He Himself is in the mind, and the mind is in Him. |
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹਨ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੭॥ |
Nĝnak kīmaṯ kahan na jĝ▫e. ((7)) |
O Nanak, His worth cannot be estimated. ((7)) |
ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਪਰਭ ਸਆਮੀ ॥ |
Saṯ saṯ saṯ parabẖ su▫ĝmī. |
True, True, True is God, our Lord and Master. |
ਗਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਵਖਿਆਨੀ ॥ |
Gur parsĝḝ kinai vakẖi▫ĝnī. |
By Guru's Grace, some speak of Him. |
ਸਚ ਸਚ ਸਚ ਸਭ ਕੀਨਾ ॥ |
Sacẖ sacẖ sacẖ sabẖ kīnĝ. |
True, True, True is the Creator of all. |
ਕੋਟਿ ਮਧੇ ਕਿਨੈ ਬਿਰਲੈ ਚੀਨਾ ॥ |
Kot maḝẖe kinai birlai cẖīnĝ. |
Out of millions, scarcely anyone knows Him. |
ਭਲਾ ਭਲਾ ਭਲਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਰੂਪ ॥ |
Bẖalĝ bẖalĝ bẖalĝ ṯerĝ rūp. |
Beautiful, Beautiful, Beautiful is Your Sublime Form. |
ਅਤਿ ਸੰਦਰ ਅਪਾਰ ਅਨੂਪ ॥ |
Aṯ sunḝar apĝr anūp. |
You are Exquisitely Beautiful, Infinite and Incomparable. |
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥ |
Nirmal nirmal nirmal ṯerī baṇī. |
Pure, Pure, Pure is the Word of Your Bani, |
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਸਨੀ ਸਰਵਨ ਬਖਯਯਾਣੀ ॥ |
Gẖat gẖat sunī sarvan bakẖ▫yĝṇī. |
heard in each and every heart, spoken to the ears. |
ਪਵਿਤਰ ਪਵਿਤਰ ਪਵਿਤਰ ਪਨੀਤ ॥ |
Paviṯar paviṯar paviṯar punīṯ. |
Holy, Holy, Holy and Sublimely Pure - |
ਨਾਮ ਜਪੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਿ ਪਰੀਤਿ ॥੮॥੧੨॥ |
Nĝm japai Nĝnak man parīṯ. ((8)(12)) |
chant the Naam, O Nanak, with heart-felt love. ((8)(12)) |
