BRIJ RAJ (d. 1833), a learned Hindu Pandit who came to settle in Lahore in the latter half of the eighteenth century, was appointed by Maharaja Ranjit Singh to the position of rajpurohit, or royal priest, which office he held till his death in 1833.

The Maharaja and the court sardars consulted him on astrological matters. Pandit Brij Raj also held appointment as almoner(1) in the Dharamarath department of the Sarkar Khalsa. The village of Qila Gujyar Singh was given to him as a jagir by the Maharaja.


1.Almoner = (fr. Greek ελεημοσϝνη, to lat., almosunartius> to fr./English, almoner; Religious officer who was in charge of distributing charity.
