Gill to Loi

During the Mughal Empire’s invasion of Punjab, the Gill clan faced alot threats and challenges so to ensure their protection and survival, some Gills adopted the surname “Loi.” This strategic move was kept secret and hidden from everyone, to prevent the Mughals from discovering their true identity.

Today, the Lois from the Hoshiarpur region in Punjab are still fundamentally Gills. The original identity of the Gill clan remains intact. Many people today do not know about the surname change due to the secrecy surrounding it, making sure nobody found out including the Mughals. It is said that Lois from Hoshiarpur originally belonged to the Gill clan, however they have decided to keep Loi.
