Gill to Loi
During the Mughal Empire’s invasion of Punjab, the Gill clan faced significant threats and challenges. To ensure their protection and survival, many Gills adopted the surname “Loi.” This strategic move was kept secret and hidden from everyone, including the Lois themselves, to prevent the Mughals from discovering their true identity.
Today, the Lois from the Hoshiarpur region in Punjab are still fundamentally Gills. The original identity of the Gill clan remains intact, and there is no longer a need to still keep Loi for safety or other purposes. Many people today do not know about the surname change due to the secrecy surrounding it, making sure nobody found out including the Mughals. Every Loi from Hoshiarpur originally belonged to the Gill clan and continues to.
