Loi

Loi, Loey, Loyi, Loei, is a Jat surname and clan within the Sikh community ,from North East Panjab. Loi Jats are said to be descendants of the Gill Jat clan. 'Loi' was either an adopted name by one of the sons of Gill many years ago and then became a a separate Jat clan, or during the mughal empire attack on Panjab, the Gill clan had to hide their identity for protection, so a part of the clan adopted 'Loi' as their new name, leading to their identity being secret. Loi Jats have their main origin in the Hoshairpur district of Panjab, in the Doaba region. They are from the village Pandori Ganga Singh in Hoshairpur district. Loi Jats stand as one of the rarest and smallest Jat clans, not many people are aware of the Lois. Lois live one of the oldest and purest Jat clans, in the 1891 India caste census, Loi was recorded as a Jat sub-caste.

The word Loi in Punjabi means “shawl”, which is a blanket used to keep you warm, and means blanket or cover for protection in the Sindhi language (From the lower Indus Valley in Sindh).

Loi is an adopted name by a group of the Gill Jat clan, during the period when the Mughals attacked Punjab for hidden identification and protection purposes, or it was adopted by one of the sons of 'Gill'. The Lois are all originally Gills.

Loi Jats were all originally Gills. Gill is a parent clan to the Loi Jats, as it is to the Sidhu, Virk and Shergill Jats. They are the same ancestry as Gill Jats and same heritage, however they are alot smaller and rarer, as they have branched of the Gills .Loi Jats have gained a strong reputation for owning significant amount of land within their village and other regions of Panjab. The Lois main profession has always been farming, like many other Jat clans. They owned some of the healthiest farm animals within their villages. Other castes have tried to claim this surname however Loi was originally and always Jat.
