The materialistic expression of wealth has nothing to do with religion and indeed goes against Sikhism. If they have no wish to follow the Gurdwara’s wishes, then they are looking at the ceremony for the wrong reasons and they should not be there.
The most beautiful wedding I attended was one held solely at the Gurdwara with vegetarian food and plain water to drink. I knew that the words my friends were saying were done so with commitment to each other and to God. -Sikhnet comment by Lins
