Sarang
(Saarang) The Sarang is an Indian musical raga (composition) that appears in the Sikh tradition from northern India and is part of the Sikh holy scripture called Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji or SGGS for short. Every raga has a strict set of rules which govern the number of notes that can be used; which notes can be used; and their interplay that has to be adhered to for the composition of a tune.
In the SGGS, the Sikh holy Granth (book), there are a total of 60 raga compositions and this raga is the fifty-first raga to appear in the series. The composition in this raga appears on a total of 57 pages from page numbers 1197 to 1254.
Raag Sarang (ਸਾਰੰਗ) – Sarang's character is soothing and has the ability to extinguish the minds smouldering selfishness and negative nature. The emotions of Sarang quench the minds burning desires, by expressing and highlighting the soul’s pure and true thoughts. This is a positive and fulfilling change.
Sarang is an important raga in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and was used extensively by Guru Arjan Dev Ji. However, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Guru Amar Das Ji, Guru Ram Das Ji, and Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji also composed shabads to this raga and Guru Angad Dev Ji used it for some slokas.
