When was Sahibzada Ajit Singh (1687 - 1705)born?

This is probably as simple typo error but I'm confused as the article states that he was born on the 26th of January 1687; but on the Sikh Wiki Homepage, it states the 11th of Feb as his birthday. 14:12, 12 February 2008 Harkiret

Well spotted there! Unfortunately, it not a simple typo but a complication due to the various calendars that have been used since 1469.

Due to the introduction of the Nanakshahi calendar a few years ago and it's slow take up, many of the old "established" dates as stated on western calendars have been moved in line with the new Sikh calendar. Unfortunately not all articles at the moment reflect these "new" dates as synchronised with the western calendar. Also no final conclusion has been decided on the fate of the Nanakshahi calendar.

However, we need to celebrate Ajit Singh birthday either on 26 Jan or 12 Feb. Most, celebrations are taking place as per the new Nanakshahi calendar but it will take a few years more to adjust the dates on all the articles and for everyone to accept the new dates as per Nanakshahi! Not everyone is clear how these dates should be changed in view of the new calendar.

I sorry for the confusion. I will enter this point somewhere on SikhiWiki to clarify this fact for all to read. We still do not have a "full" calendar with dates that can be agreed. Someone needs to project the Nanakshahi calendar back to its beginning in 1469; synchronise it with the Bikrami calendar and the western calendar to get all these dates decided. It is not likely to happen soon!

All the historical dates were initially recorded in the then used calendar which was a Hindu/Nepali based calendar called Bikrami eg: dob of Guru Gobind Singh is recorded as: 10 Poh 1719 Bikrami (Dalip Singh in his book: Life of Sri Gobind Singh Ji). This was initially "translated" to western calendar by various scholars (some may not have been done correctly). Now, we need to change this again on to the Nanakshahi calendar and "revise" the date as per the western calendar.

Sorry to narrate these confusing details to you! But thanks to you for bringing it to my attention.

Allaboutsikhs.com gives the Nanakshahi date as 11 feb. Unless they have made a mistake! Need to do more checking; The SGPC calendar for 2007-8 (in Punjabi) also shows 11 Feb although not clear if 2008 or 2007 but that should not matter. Hari Singh 08:05, 12 February 2008 (MST)

Re the Zafarnama and Aurangzeb's diary

An unequal but grim battle / a mere forty defying a hundred thousand (lakh). /The martyrdom of two of the sons of Guru Gobind Singh in the battle of Chamkaur is substantiated by a contemporary record in the form of an official letter preserved in a MS., Ahkami Alamgiri by Emperor Aurarigzeb's official letter writer, Mirza 'Inayat Ullah Khan Ismi (1653-1725). The relevant extract from the MS., translated into English, reads:

Received the letter containing miscellaneous matters including the arrival of Gobind, the worshipper of Nanak, to a place 12 kos from Sirhind; the despatch of a force of 700 with artillery and other material; his being besieged and vanquished in the haveli [i.e. large walled house] of a zamindar of village Chamkaur and the killing of his two sons and other companions; and the capture of his mother and another son…

All the stories mention 40 against 100,000 thousand. the letter in suport of, as if someone doubts the facts or has cites a letter in Alamgir's (Auranzeb) papers where the Moghuls mention only 700 being sent. were there 99,000+ Gujjars & Ranghars. seems like a bad letter to use as proof. as numbers are very different. i guess i will have to read Guru's Zafarnama. maybe a typo 700?, and another son…? not 2, again a typo?, have not seen Ahkami Alamgiri eitherAllenwalla 22:46, 19 March 2008 (MDT)
