Alcohol visited much misery upon my family as my folks were part of the Scotch Irish migration that traveled down the east coast of America. Making both 'Scotch' and 'Irish wiskey' were the main source of income for many country people here in the south. My grandfather, father were what are known as bootleggers or moonshiners at one time as were all of my paternal uncles. their product was called moonshine or white lightening. as a kid i swore i would never drink. As Ghandhi ji had a taste of meat once i did have a swallow of beer once-awful stuff i thought.

Making moonshine was a way to make money in the winter off the corn grown in the summer.

Today drugs are a much worse problem and moonshine has all but dissappeared thought teenagers are heavily in to alcohol. The last several years there was a big effort (national campaign named - Just Say No which was widely televised in many ads and was also on bumpers of cars and trucks and tee-shirts all over america.

I mean no offence but I have often thought of Guru Nanak as perhaps the first person or advocate of this slogan. When offered Bhang by Akbar the Guru told him that he had a 'Bhang that would keep him in that high state, close to God feeling, that saw some Sikhs (the Bhangi Misl) and many Hindu Sadhus use the drug to feel closer to God. As God was always imagined high on a mountain top -- hence the word HIGH. Guru Nanak then told him of his way of being close to God and of course refused the bhang. Akbar is said to have asked the Guru for this way or method. And tried to develop his own religion the Din Illahi to bring peace to the Hindus and Muslims of India?

So Guru Nanak is the first i know of who said no to Drugs, as is related in History. As i suppose some might take offence i have never used or written of this. Please erase after reading.
