I can imagine that Sikhs parents of the time would not allow american, non-sikh men to marry their daughters either - such was the 20s. A baptist family would not have wanted their daughter to marry a Catholic either in those days.

A few years ago A Sikh canadian  family (the grandfather and his daughter (the mother) had their daughter killed for marrying a Sikh of a differing caste-back in India -  ignoring the teachings of the Gurus.
Karo-kari is still seen in canada as Muslim fathers kill their daughters for marrying someone not 'chosen by the father' even today.
One Muslim father in NYC killed his two teenage daughters, because he 'thought' they had dated non- muslim boys. He then took a flight to Pakistan.
Some Muslims today even in 100F + temps - allow no air conditioning, power in the house, ect. - just because their was no power during the Prophet's (SAW) days. Today in parts of Iraq Cucumbers and tomatoes have to be kept separate because one is a 'male looking shape and the other is perceived as female shaped. this is today not a hundred years ago.  NY Times [http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/16/magazine/16suicide-t.html?ref=middleeast].
Please erase if I don't in a few days.
Now holding Shah Rukh at the airport that's just strange.
