Kishtwar,the upland valley in the north east corner of [[Jammu]] region of Jammu and Kashmir state,is situated among the picturesque folds of the Pir Panjal and the Great Himalayan range.The area is drained by the [[Chenab]] which enters the area through Paddar, home of the Sapphire mimes. This area is collectively called the Kishtwar Himalayans ,comprises of sevaral high altitude peaks,passes and glaciers.Across the Kishwar Himalayas is the region of Zanaskar([[Ladakh]]).The people of Paddar and Zanskar have along history of trade and culural exchange and have been using 2 or 3 high altitude passes to cross over,the Great Himalayan range. Of these passes the historic 5330 mts high Omasi-La pass is the most exotic. This area remained under the control of [[Maharaja Ranjit Singh]].
