Worn by sikhs(derived from original sanskrit word 'Shishiya'litterally meaning students) to make a social statement & formal commitment to the fact of their being life time studentds dedicated to seek absolute 'TRUTH' Through humble service & absolute submission(read study/research/analysis of the Holy Book of Sikhs called 'SHIRI GURU GRANTH SAHIB') to GURU.
The term 'GURU' does not refer to any Human GURU, but to 'Satgur'or'Gur' in short. Gurmukhi term satgur litterally meaning one or a set of 'TRUE IDEA/IDEAs'of living poised & Truthfull life dedicated only & only to Absolute 'TRUTH' & 'Humanity' life which is absolute 'TRUTH'. This is a symbol of infinity, and represents hand cuffs. The idea is that a sikh is always hand-cuffed to 'TRUTH'(read GOD).
