Many thanks for your contribution on this topic but I think (and believe) that the definition is not strictly correct according to Gurbani and in particular Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Doesn't this Shabad give a definition of a Sikh - Maharaj says:

SGGS Page 305 Full Shabad

ਮਃ ੪ ॥ Mehlĝ 4. Fourth Mehl: ਗ੝ਰ ਸਤਿਗ੝ਰ ਕਾ ਜੋ ਸਿਖ੝ ਅਖਾਝ ਸ੝ ਭਲਕੇ ਉਠਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ੝ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥ Gur saṯgur kĝ jo sikẖ akẖĝ­ė so bẖalkė uṯẖ har nĝm ḝẖi­ĝvai. The mention of Kesh is not there. I wonder where it in Gurbani it says that a Sikh MUST have Kesh and that without Kesh the person cannot be a Sikhs?

Also, until 1699, it appears that there was no requirement for Sikhs to don a Turban and I wonder if all Sikhs kept their hair? Personally, I believe not. Also many Muslims were engaged in the Guru service but they remained Muslims - and there must have been many who followed the Gurus, but had not yet become "full" Sikhs - Surely here the word Sehajdhari applies and then they may don hair and turban and be called Keshdhari without actually taking Amrit.

I accept that after 1699, the requirement changed but only for the Khalsa. Some say that various famous Sikhs did not become Khalsa - ie? Bhai Nand Lal ji, Bhai Kanhaiya ji, etc. To me the word Keshdhari is relevant but it does not make the other word like Sehajdhari, Amritdhari, etc redundant.

As I can appreciate from spirit of your letter that God ( Nanak prefers to refer to God as 'TRUTH god' because true Name of GOD is 'TRUTH'. i. e. SatNaam as is written in the beginning of Mool Mantar. ) has blessed you with the intellect to read SatGurBani written on your heart. SatGurBani was not written by our gurus. It is already written on every body's heart. Gurus just copied it on paper for us to get guided for reading it from our heart ( they sacrificed themself for doing this) .

A Sikh is called a TRUE Sikh. only when he learns to read Gurbani from his / her heart . Gurbani is GOD's language written on every one's heart. By repeatedly listening to, speaking / singing ,& pondering over the meaning one becomes fluent in understanding the TRUE meaning conveyed by it. This is TRUE Sikhi..

In this writing I have included some links relevant to the persona of TRUE Sikh. & his his/ her TRUE Sikhi. . Keshdhari Sikhs

Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh Sarbjeet ji, You take a very firm stand on kesh - you said "A sikh without keshas is not considered a sikh". This is a very strong statement and does not give any leeway to a person who is slowly adopting the Sikh way. I agree that kesh is important but I believe that Gurmat does not bar a person from calling himself a Sikh if he has not yet donned full kesh.

All I am trying to establish is where we draw the line. I say if one accepts Sri Guru Granth Sahib as Guru and none other, then he is a Sikh. You say that the person must have Kesh before he can call himself a Sikh. I have never come across this in Gurbani - It is purely for that reason I asked you ...where in Gurbani it says that a Sikh MUST have Kesh and that without Kesh the person cannot be a Sikhs? Does it actually say that in Gurbani? I agree we have a difference of opinion but I was wondering if you are relying on Gurbani to come to your opinion or "you have formed this opinion independently"? You moved the article untitled "Sikh Phulwari" to "SIKH MAGZINES" - This has several errors -

• 1. the titles should be in "Title case" - See Wikipedia Naming conventions
• 2. The spelling according to my spell-checker is incorrect. Please use spell-checker to check all the spellings in the title and in the text of the article. But the title is most important!
• 3. The name of the magazine is "Sikh Phulwari" - so that seems to be the right name to give to the article - don't you agree?

• Khalsaji I share your concern, why should they block you ?.
• These are the tricks which web site mangers resort to, to hide their faces.

I have looked at the page on Wikipedia Magnetic Hill (India) and I agree that the information there is incorrect - unfortunately, the setup at Wikipedia is driven by the majority who are non-Sikhs - so it is impossible to get the correct information on the Sikhi articles easily at that site.

I have left a message with User:Sukh who has more experience at Wikipedia and I hope he will be able to help - although he also does not play an important role there now. Unfortunately, the article is based on incorrect information from the Hindu newspaper - may be we should get that corrected first!

I would not worry about that site too much as it is well known that many Sikhi aspect have been wrongly represented. Let us work on SikhiWiki and make it the number 1 site for Sikhi information. Then Wikipedia will refer users to our site! Kind regards. das, Hari Singh 17:14, 25 August 2007 (EDT)

I think the list at Gurdwaras_In_India - Jammu & Kashmir and the category list produced by Gurudwara In Jammu & Kashmir are both useful because the first one lists all the Gurdwaras even if no article exists for that Gurdwara while the other one only gives a list of existing gurdwaras in J&K. They cannot be said to be absolute duplicates but I agree that there is some repetition in the lists. I believe that User:Thegreateditor has done a lot of work on the Gurdwara lists - perhaps you can ask him to have a look at this problem. Also, I am not familiar with the Gurdwara in J&K. Regarding the Gurdwaras in india J&k list - if you goto the Gurdwaras that are not in the "Gurudwaras In Jammu & Kashmir category" and add the category line at the bottom - that will bring them into the category list. Let me know if you have any difficulty.

Sikh Code of Conduct

Respected Sarbjeet, Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh

I accept what you say - Many different Sikh bodies continue to have so called "Rehat Maryadas" but this article is dealing with the Codes of conduct as stipulated by Guru Granth Sahib. The article SGGS on meat gives quotations from Gurbani which deal with this issue and should be the deciding factor for a Sikh. As a Guru's Sikh, I think Gurbani is our only spiritual guide in this world and that we should not rely on any other guidance or "Rehat Maryada".

SikhiWiki is a web-site completely devoted to the Guru and as such we cannot get involved in the "manmat" influenced "maryadas" being proposed by the many different Sikh bodies. As Sikhs, what the Guru says should be our only guidance in life. We should not be influenced in our spiritual understanding by other sources. I am not "spreading my views" in this article - The statement is based on the article SGGS on meat, which has quotations from Gurbani. I am only interpreting the message of our Guru.

What do you think of the message of the Guru? SGPC is not the authority on Sikhism, the Guru is! SGPC can only be a guide in this matter, just like any other external body. ONLY the Guru is the authority on matter pertaining to Sikhism. A Sikh is defined as a person who follows the Guru Granth Sahib only.

I have checked the block list and the user is not on the list - It is possible that the user shares the same ip address as user:Viamedia who was block for advertising, I believe. Good day, Sarbjeet spent the morning reading the ASA DI VAR many words i recognize as roots of english words. My copy seems to expand a little on Guru Nanak's words as there is usually 5 to 6 times as many words in English. For the true intent oof the writing i guess i'll have to study Gurmukhi.

Came to the lines about the graves of the mussalmen mixing with the potters clod which caused so much animosity between the later Nanak and his son.

Can't for the life of me understand why this upset Aurangzeb as my muslim friend and his wife told me of the muslim belief of punishment in the grave untill the day of redemption very superstitious they showed me a pix that that traveled the internet of the susposed proof of this torture by a hammer that as the Qur'an says would smash a mountain. the river was damned (DAMAdara, or rope around the belly both meaning held back or controlled) when i was a child. The very big lake named after the poet is almost dry now from the severe drought. Millions here are very worried.

There are several rivers here in the mtns. 2 of which have many large boulders which as the water hits them and churn up the milky white foam. I accept that the picture may not conform with Sikhi principles but I think that is to be expected. If Baba ji was a follower of Sikhi, he would not be have formed the Udasi movement. Baba ji is known as the founder of this movement and I think that as their leader the follower of that movement are the ones whose perception of Baba ji is likely to be acceptable to all. Just as the picture of Guru Nanak are "approved" by the Sikh majority, so the pictures of Baba Sri Chand have to be "approved" by the Udasi movement. As Sikhs, we cannot project Sikhi values on Baba ji. Only the Udasi movement can project their values into these pictures - see sikh-heritage.co.uk. It must be accepted that Baba ji was actually not a Sikh as he started his own sect instead of following his father, Guru Nanak.

Splitting of the article Baba Farid: I think keeping the two together may have some merits at present as it is not very clear who contributed to SGGS and whether the facts are conclusive. In the long run, after research, when more material is available, the split can be made as the article may get too big. I do not have any strong views on this but splitting at present will just divide attention to two pages, both dealing with the same issue. Technically, we don't need any pictures. But as they say - "A picture is worth a 1000 words". A picture can tell a "complex story" or "may be more influential than a substantial amount of text". Here by just looking at a picture, you can tell that the person is not a Sikh in form; is not a householder; is a yogi and ascetic, etc, etc. It tells a complex story quickly. Also, it makes it easier, quicker, more attractive, is in lazy man's territory, it poses questions in the mind, etc. If there was no picture, we would not have this interest in the article - so I believe that pictures do help even if they are not totally correct - It is just someone imagination - These pictures are not a historical record - they are mainly symbolic.

I hope this helps you to understand my point of view although I don't expect you to agree with it. We use pictures and images to help to understand the world around us - I think that this applies to articles here. I don't think the picture is totally wrong, in which case we would remove it. Problem solving

SSA, Sarjeet ji, if only i could solve all my problems so easily. i guess i had mixed Banda Bahadur in my head as i had not percieved Bahadur being attached to Baba Deep Singh's name thanks! Had listened to Kabirs Parbhati while rewriting some yesterday or day before on Bandi Chhhor, to nite we listened to the Harmandir radio cast was surprised today to notice while researching Baba Deep Singh that the tile is shaped like a large stop sign (here in the US) the place which marks where his head landed. while trying to find the tile and its location i noticed the map of Harmandir Sahib is inaccurate on wikipedia. Photos and directions are miss-labled. on the sikhiwiki article you pointed out i tried to write the location correctly as the line (on it) was taken straight from someones site and didn't make sense since the sentences before were not included—so i said just south of the northeast corner but according to Google earth that corner is almost directly south at about 5:00o'clock instead of south at 6:00 just around the corner from the entry with the langar. thanks for the 2 pix. allenwalla

Who says that Baba deep singh killed Wazir khan. Well if there anything like this written in any of article you are supposed to delete it. Wazir Khan was killed by Banda Singh Bahadur when Banda singh bahadur attacked on sirhind aftermath of killing of Young Sahibzadas of guru gobind singh jee. Banda singh want to destroy Wazir khan and when banda singh attacked sirhind Banda singh was killed over there(its not sure banda singh or any other singh from that fightout killed wazir khan) but the credit goes to Banda Singh Bahadur. and its said Wazir khan was killed with an arrow and when arrow was moving towards wazir khan wazir khan last words was " Oh my god Guru's teer(arrow), from where it comes". Its said that that arrow was shooted by Banda Singh.

Conclusion Wazir khan was killed when Baba Banda SIngh attacked sirhind i dunno know date or year read from banda singh's article.

Baba Deep singh is not et all related with attcking on sirhind he is related with saving the pride of sikhism harimandir sahib when ahmed shah abdali durani attacked amritsar.

I just added a few things i could find you probably have much more knowledge than i can even find / the articles i found say the building was destroyed others say it was damaged like all internet stuff it may be accurate, old, wrong or a typo, so as i enjoy your writing complete the article, please. i perhaps am a better editor than initiator at least that is the way it has been.

If you look it up in a western dictionary you will find no mention of the Indian source, it is that way for most words. Change the name of the Saint or date of the battle or the warriors' names and you could see this as Maharaja Ranjit Singh lamenting his once friend who had died in bed instead of on the battlefield.

It is 7:19 here we had Thanksgiving day today where families get together and have a big dinner with Turkey, wild caught Salmon, dressing, gravy, deviled eggs, veggies, cranberry sauce and chocolate pie and a pound cake. My mother cooked the cake and pie. we all got together at my brothers house. My sister in law loves to host this yearly event when we all thank God for all our blessings. SSA, Sarbjeet this is a copy of a note i sent to Sardar Hari Singh (i remember him writing about going to India in Dec. so am also sending you a copy with the same questions i hope one of you can help with, today i saw and excellent short article on Alexander Gardner, an officer in Maharaja's Ranjit Shingh's Khalsa Army, on the Sikh news page. The article on SikSangat.org has a brief story and two very clear pictures. These are the best photos i have seen taken from that era.

G. Grey in the article on his travels in Punjab says he was a fake who made up his stories. i have read a long book in which his exploits were very detailed. with some references which make me believe the man did serve in the Khalsa. in one story he recounts his first day meeting Ranjit Singh when a Sikh risaldari challenged him, in a test of bravery, by riding his horse straight at him. As i have read of a Pathani who returned to Wazirastan, going to the town where all the guns are made, who had his manhood tested, as he had been warned would happen, when a snake charmer threw one of his snakes at him to see 'if he showed fear; i can believe that the Khalsa risaldari would do a similar test on a farengi to test his mettal. He also reports troops of Ghulab Singh being detached with a charge of gunpowder to the gateway that Nau Nihal Singh walked under during its sudden collaspe on his return from his father's cremation. Thirdly he mentions defending the Royal family at Lahore during the attack by Gulab Singh Dogra's brother and Sher Singh. In ref. to this attack he mentions Sher Singh putting out an as he says "old Punjabi battle cry or slogan to the effect of bring yourself and five cousins to share the glory and booty to be gained by taking Lahore — roughly akin to the cry for help of the jihadists who use the Qu'ran to get help in laying spoil to their enemies. You i am sure recall this .

All of this plus the new story makes me believe in the man's tales as the truth. Today i added a page on him, i would like to add the photos on the Sikhiwiki story for all to see.

My request is in 3 parts -

   1. i do not know how to download a photo, only recently learned to link a photo in art. on SGGS 
   2. can we use the photos in the SikhSangat.org story 
   3. the photo of Gardner surrounded by Khalsa soldiers is very clear and Strangely has large Helvetica bold initials in caps( R S S ) printed over the photo in very Bold text in light gray letters? I have to wonder about the letters almost hidden in this way?

Thanks for the holiday wishes

Ann is now home and walking around some and feeling pretty good. Sorry that the time of the holiday is associated with the bad days when Anandpur was anything but Anand. How is the loss of the Guru's sons and mother acknowledged, what events go on, special services, moments of silence, etc?

The gift giving that goes on here is as you saw in the internet site associated with old pagan rituals of celebrating the 'rebirth' of the sun or surya or it of itvar, aftab, etc. when the sun which seemed to be shining less and less towards a certain death when suddenly the days grew longer and longer once again becoming a reason for hope , rebirth and celebration, a few days at least when people forgot their petty quarrels and celebrated the brotherhood of all.

Lights of course are put up on trees in most homes and some homes are festooned with lights as one sees the homes of Punjabis lit up during a wedding or many of theGurdwaras for many occassions.

i find two things for ney

1. Marshal Ney one of Napoleon's best generals. in that case it would have been been said by Avitabile or a european in Ranjit Singh's army.

Pipul tree

SSA, Sarbjeet ji, was wondering if the name of the Gurdwara made reference, as one i read early this morning to one named after a Horse's hoof that struck water when ridden by one of the Nanaks, to the events in the history.

Lucky tells me it is the cause of much trouble as it is used in black majic (quoting from memory)

you referred me to your article on the tree, once back in October when i was a newbie on sikhiwiki i had added some writing to your story, only to notice at bottom you were still developing story. i told you of the version as i had reverted. i don't know if you ever saw so this morning i have reverted to that story, please take a look and see if you need to add or revert to story as it was before today. Just watching tv the story of war betweem Guge and Ladakh on PBS the Public Broadcasting Network where i started my first real job at atlanta's PBS. Ladakhis think they have won sealing all entries into the mt. citadel but they have found hundreds of headless skeletons at the Sutlej river at Su or sabang there is a wall built by the captured Guge slaves forced to carry stones from across the sutlej at Black mtn. seeing his people suffer the Guge king surrendered they now think the skeletons were the remaining Gugay people. always something new to learn of. have a good day = SSA Allenwalla 21:49, 27 January 2008 (MST)the once lush fields are now turning to desert. An inspiration of Guru nanak has founded in Istanbul turkey, its just on west part of turkey,To reach there Guru nanak have to travel through Jordan, Israel, plaestine, Syria and in return he reached azerbaizan in russia then enters iraq, Iran, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan & Pakistan to his native. Well my first question Guru nanak if travel by foot how much day it takes to cover so long journey???

• How he reached mecca?? From Karachi he took boat and reached jeddah or he travveled along sea shore oman, yemen then saudi????
• One more thing enters my mind Khuhram shahr guru nanak went and that is on south of iran if guru nanak went baghdad in iraq and went there on south of iran then why he go to north in tehran or masshad............and if he went from baghdad to north of iran then when he covered Khuhrm sehar and bushehar. West Journey is bit confusing.

• Ok suppose from Medina in saudi he directly enter Baghdad in iraq and havent visit Turkey, russia or syria then also the above point rises. He visits mashad by many historians, He visit Khoram and bushsr by many historians and he visited Syria and palestine also by many historians.

Due to Muslim countries they just washed away the guru nanak's related places or material. No inspiration in Mecca, Medina, Jeddah, Russia, Afghanistan even(Hail Taliban). Instances found in Iran, Iraq, Turkey and others are just vanished or washed. route is bit confusing to me

1. what is a metaled road exactly. in WWII Seabees (US Navy Engineers and const. units layed metal perfed panels on sandy Pacific islands for runways for aircraft. are the roads actually metal would it not rust and corrode away in J & K.

2. Nepal seems to have some severe rules not allowing citizenship to children born there. Do you have and inkling of the idea the Sikh in the trucking business is talking of/ a sentence seems to be missing.

The pictures that you have done for the above event look excellent. Many thanks for doing these for the sangat. There is not a lot to improve on but as you asked so kindly to make comments for improvement, then with great deal of thinking I can only say 2 little things:

• 1. To complement the wide pictures of the sangat, one or two more individual or "near shot" would make for a better range of pictures.

• 2. I find that with the sun behind you when taking picture as against in front of you, gives better lighting and clarity.

These are not very important things but it may help make the photos even more interesting.

SSA, Sarbjeet ji, just thinking its getting to be the time you get up and do your morning, Sikhi - don't really know exactly what to call everthing? (is this something the family does together?, never seen a page on that) and your morning edits and additions. Just wanted to say Hi, its coming up on midnight here. Ann had an excellent time in Califirnia where the emphasis was more on celebrating her uncles life rather than a lot of sadness and grieving. Though i am sure that there was some of that as well. regards richard / i have spent much of the last two weeks or more on fencing in the 150'x150' garden with a 6 to 8' in places fence to bann the deer from munching everthing i plant. if i step out at night they huff at me from about 25ft. away and give me the 'mujee bukk lughi hai' stare - they think i am the grocerywallah- please excuse my spelling attempt at probably Hindi.

SSA, Spent most of the day at the hospital, happily Ann's test showed her heart to be in good condition. Time for taps. Do you know about taps, the tune played in the Army camps for 'lights out.'

Its relation to alcohol, of which i see you are writing. Regards to all richard Taps is also played when a soldier dies at the funeral, when one's light has gone out.

In the poster the photographer has posed him in a way used for Snoop Dawg. I have read he is popular with Sikh youth. One might think him not the best role model, but he and a several other 'rappers' have been actively reforming their images and doing many good works now. Please check the article.

Also the article that just got removed on the alchohol study did report that moderate use seemed to have a positive effect, but i did not see it boosting alcohol's use. As such studies usualy point out that one small a burra peg or less is all one should drink. for those who drink that would not boost but greatly reduce most people's use.

Of course for a Sikh following Bani and Rehat, any would be too much. The stuff is a poison anyway. I did see the article as positive telling any Sikh stupid enough to use it or anyone else that more than a minor amount is dangerous.

Where are the rules of Sikhiwiki to be found? The name Sharaab itself is intriging Shah and Raab, i guess the Nihangs who argue for its (Bhaang's) use, as an old tradition, think of it as the name reflects the same way the Sadhus thought of Bhaang as well.

As children we all, assuming you as well, loved to spin and get the 'intoxicating effect' which the Sufis perfected to get in touch with God.

I guess that, as Guru Nanak said The Fear of You, Vaheguru, is my Bhaang (or Sharaab, as well). The the Bhaang or Sharaab, whose stimulation never ends.

Chota veerji, I am most grateful for you kind words and heartfelt concern. With Guru's blessings papaji is now a lot better than he was last week.

Papaji has for 20 years been suffering from hypertension and has been on tablets to reduce his bp. Mamaji and Papaji are both about 78 and stay nearby and have been in very good health until about 3 weeks ago when Papaji fell due to very low blood pressure. Subsequently, we went to the hospital as an emergency but they could not find anything wrong. However, they stopped his bp tablets completely as they suspect that this may be resulting in the very low bp. Since then his bp is stable but he is still very unsteady on his feet. I have been staying at Papaji's place since then and monitoring his health.

He is very slowly making progress. Please do ardas for his well being. I am sure with Waheguru's bakshish, all will be well. I will keep SikhiWiki friends informed of Papaji's health. regards, Hari Singh^talk 21:59, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

AgA onor^honhas / this seems miss-spelled from page Aghori

The term agA onor^honhas passed into popular Punjabi usage standing for one who is indolent of habit and indifferent in matters of personal hygiene and cleanliness.

Sat Shri Akal, Veerji, Haven't seen you much here of late. I saw this word in a page today the term seems miss spelled but is susposed to be a Punjabi word now, do you know how to spell it correctly.

How are you and your family. We have picked 2 quarts of big rasberries even though the garden experts say they don't grow well in the south. Many more ripen every day. The Blue berries are just ripening we usually get 5-10 gallons of them every year.

Haven't heard much from you

Sure that everyone was wondering what had happened to you. Rebellion seems a strange word for a child's tee.

Thought that I had read that Sikhs loved ones ashes were added to rivers wasn't sure. Think I read this while working on the article on Beant Singh and Satwant Singh. In that case the autorities forced the families to carry the ashes to Hardvar if i remember correctly, so I wasn't sure--thanks.

Re Golden Temple

SSA, Sarbjeet ji , glad to see you still have power, i read that all the tv and radio stations were shut down.

I am not suggesting any name change. I am one of the few non Indians that i know who have ever heard the temples Punjabi name. I think it is foolish for the commitee to ban the use of the name. I can only assume this ban is meant to be for Sikhs and not the outside world.

If it weren't for Golden Temple redirecting to the page I would not have been able to find it. Now i have learned the name, but many people of the world do not know it. For American and English tourists not having Golden temple beside the correct name on maps and roadsigns could cause much hardship. Putting the English translation - God's Temple - might also cause hurt to people who think their places of worship are God's houses as well, but would never call one by that name.

The Golden Temple is known all over the world, I imagine it is almost as popular as the Taj Mahal is, it is certainly as well known around the world thanks to the English name for it.

The Ersatz Hindu version of the Mandir near the train station could now latch onto the name and put signs up for it since the Sikh body has prohibited its use and it too is covered in Gold.

Tonight i have spent more than four hours redrawing the map which still says Golden Temple to meet their wishes, the credit at the bottom is to the SPGC?

Just seemed silly to me I never expected its name to be changed or even used on the Gurdwara. It to me seemed to be in the same realm, of having the Hindutva Groups demand that all references and signs which said - INDIA - would now have to say Bharat. Take care. richard

Apples falling far from their trees

SSA, Sarbjeet ji, thanks for the translation and good to see you are all safe in Jammu. Had read of the many trucks being stopped as the crowds tossed their loads of apples off. It's apple season here too in the GA mountains. Here many apple orchards have roadside buildings and people excape the heat of the flatlands surrounding Atlanta and travel to the hills to get a sack of apples. We don't have people stopping the trucks, but the high gas prices have cut deeply into the numbers of people making the mountain trips. And every thing just keeps raising in price daily.

Glad you enjoyed the gigapan photo, still blows me away/ you could never see the details like this even if you were there. Of course there is much more you could see. I wish someone would shoot a panorama from the other side/end. The person with the site has instructions on how to do this. Someone with a good camera needs to read how to do this and make a similar picture for the other half. Glad to hear things are returning to normal in J & K.

Installed a widjet (free share ware) works on apple panther system which gives me a picture of where the sun is lighting the earth at the press of a button and it's now 'coming up' in Africa. Another lets me see all the weather radar across america also. Have a good day say hi to all, richard.

Dad's condition is serious

My dear SikhiWiki friend,

I am sorry to say that Dad is very seriously ill due to a heart attack at 1am this morning at the local hospital and is on life support. Please pray for him so that he does not suffer in his journey that may be left on this planet. We do not know if he will make it but hope that Waheguru will bless him as best as he deserves. Unfortunately, I will not be at home until things get resolved one way or the other but I will let you know as soon as there is any development for the better or for the worse. Many thanks for your heartfelt messages. With Waheguru's blessings, Dad is still in the same critical condition. The ITC are doing their best to help him but situation is pretty difficult and there are many hurdles to overcome. They say that the heart attack was very severe and that it is not functioning efficiently or pumping the required amount of blood around the body. The pulse keeps jumping higher to increase the blood flow but due to damage to the heart this is not helping.

Prayer seems to be the only avenue open to us. They say they will keep trying to maintain a reasonable pulse and blood pressure to see if the heart muscle "recovers". Kidneys are also suffering due to the low blood flow and not extracting enough toxins from the body as required.

I am sorry to say that Dad has left this world

My dear SikhiWiki friend,

Unfortunately, I have to give you very sad news that Dad passed away on Friday, 17 October 2008. The doctors tried their best to help him but it seems that his moment to leave had arrived. I am sorry that I could not communicate this sad fact to you earlier.

The whole of the family and I would like to thank everyone especially you for your concern and deep interest in the outcome. Dad had suffered from hypertension for many years and although on medicine, it appears that his heart was gradually damaged and due to his age it could not continue to function. The left ventricle stopped functioning adequately and so it was impossible for him to carry on sustaining himself as enough blood was not being pumped around the body.

re Singh is Kinng. I will have to bone upon my Punjabi as i can't read most of them. The one bit I can get is about Ishmeet Singh who in all the pictures I have seen seemed to have a short beard. Maybe he did the twirl and tuck twisty thing that looks like a 'trimmer'.

Seems almost as if he is being idolized now, but I guess we won't see little dolls of him like was common here in the US when fans went so wild for Elvis that his dolls sold by the millions. The difference between a sculpture and an idol is a question. The recent page on a Gurdwara being built in San Diego --the story had a line saying there would be no sculptures or idols in the Gurdwara. It seemed almost as if it was the same as the Muslim hatred for sculpture or images of any living thing--hence the taliban blowing up film stores. Of course it is only Catholic churches that have the sculptures of Jesus, as most protestant churches have nothing more than a cross on a wall here or there.

I wonder if the taliban hate cameras and photography as well. Hard for me to believe that people (all wedding singers and music at weddings were and still are being banned along the border in the tribal areas and barbers being first threatened and then killed if they didn't leave). A wedding without ganabajana seems awful to me. richard

We were delighted to see that there has been little violence in the election and that despite the separatists calling for a boycott on voting north of you the Kashmiris' really got out and voted. Sad to see that the first snow caught several people in a deadly avalanche, what exactly is a porter. Here the term means baggage carriers.

And how about that Indian Navy the Battle Ax (INS Tabar) is all over the news today. Other than Maharaja Ranjit Singh's river boat he had his european officers design I have never read anything about a Sikh or Sikhs being in the Navy.

Also on the tombstones at the The Menin Gate in Ieper (netherlands?) engraved on Sikh graves (WWII or I) is the phrase Ik Oankar Siri Waheguru ji Ke Fateh Sanskare Gaye could you translate that for me?

On the Hindu Graves (Gurkas mostly) is the phrase - Om Bhagwattee Nammo. could you translate that also?

Following your message, I have joined the SikhiWiki community at Orkut that you recommended. Let us see how Waheguru wants us to develop in this arena. I hope you agree with me that it is our duty to make sure everyone is aware of the Guru's main message and then it is up to them to take the next step.

How much work has been done on Orkut regarding Sikhi by you and others? I see there are other Sikh communities there. Do they have any penetration into non-Sikh nations as well or is it just India or just Punjab that these sites address. I believe that if a person can read and write Gurmukhi, then he or she does not need SikhiWiki. They have a direct access to the Guru and Sikh history and if they have the desire, they could connect directly with the Guru.

On the other hand, there are billions of people who do not even know the word "Sikhi". I believe that it is these people, who do not read and write Gurmukhi or even understand Punjabi that are the primary target of SikhiWiki. I wonder if you have any views on this? Sir, It took me a few minutes to understand your reference - Deepak - a type of raga and -son - kanra / it was the hidden (a) - pronounced but not written as kanara that fooled me.

also I have another question, in the story on Hans Raj Hans, there is a line: his surname 'Hans' (swan) due, probably, to his fair impressive look and his sweet singing voice like a 'Hans'.

his fair impressive look - is this a reference to his light complexion (swans are usually white, I guess)- looking at the picture I thought he was one of the New Mexico Sikhs, but it says he was born to a peasant family, has golden curly hair and their is no mention of his being a Sikh but is Punjabi.

Also do swans sing in a pleasant voice on the other side of the world? Here there are a mated pair that swim in the lake next to my father's grave and I've yet to hear them sing. -R

Hope the elections going well

Sarbjeet, and all others looking in we are once again in CA. This time just in time for the swine flue scare. I just wanted to say hello to all. Thanks to Hari ji and the memory of Hari Singh Nalwa, I got onto the net last night to see the drawing i had done of the general on the main page. I told my mother in law and nieces - look here is a picture that I drew, no one would believe me. We hope to get to the Gurdwara in Yuba City, just up the road.

Ann has been laid off from work so expenses are tight. Hope the violence that has occurred in Kashmir during elections stays away from Jammu and all are safe.

Seems the taleban were hoping to spread into Buner and Dir all of which I do not know the names of during the Sikh Raj. Today I read that after so many kidnappings, robberies, beheadings and wanton murders, even shaving the heads and mustaches of men because they were playing music and forcing young men to join them, the army caught Maulana fazlullah making plans to fool the army while they sneaked more men into the areas as they still pretended to be laying down their arms--all caught on tape in a telephonic conversation.today Subahdar Swartzeneggar declared Calf. a danger area over the spreading swine flu, but no problems here near Sac.

Solar Eclipse

Sat Siri Akaal Ji, Sarbjeet ji, I wish I was there so if the clouds permit, for in a few hours the biggest solar eclipse will happen, though you guys no longer believe in superstition it would still be an interesting sight. Guess i am the miss guided gora alluded to by my fellow user, or has gora become the title of NRSs outside of India - As Gen. Kayani said the other day all the waziris consider him (and most of the PAK army) to be white or gora, like many of the jats and katris - judging from statements on their blogs and websites. Gurdwara Chatti Patshahi Bangla Sahib and Gurdwara Chatti Padshahi Rajouri

I can gather that it may relate to "Chhavee" ie 6th Guru but I know of no Punjabi word "chatti" which relates to 6? I will be most grateful for your help. Do you know of this Gurdwara? Perhaps we can see the name written in Gurmukhi?

Here the hard drive on my computer has fried and I can't get to my e-mail. And I am now working on a ten year old (very slow) computer. I hope all is well with you and your family. I see that where it had looked like things were calming, new problems are springing up in Kashmir. Peace seems impossible, even in Azad Kashmir militants have been blowing people up and that part of Kashmir is already part of Pakistan.

My friends from Hyderabad India use a program called skype to talk (live) to each other around the world. Do you have a camera on your computer? This old I-mac doesn't but hopefully we will be able to get the one with a camera fixed. That would be interesting to do. Ann has been talking to her sister in the other end of the country. Have a good day. or night - the sun is just coming up here. After years and years of drought, we now seem to be stuck in a monsoon, with day after day of heavy downpours.

Sarbjeet ji, the words are in red on the page I mentioned; I boxed them as in a link. They need definitions. I think the link brackets can then be removed as I doubt they need separate pages.

You may have some history around there for all the different Pandit Diwans in The page - many I had not seen before.
