Gurmat, Gurbani, Punajbi and English

Veer ji, Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh

Many thanks for your kind and detailed message. I accept that the meaning of Gurbani is best understood if read and understood in Gurmukhi but Bhai Sahib, at present we have an acute global communication vacuum. Billions of people in the world are "denied" access to Gurbani. Billions cannot know what the Gurus said! To these billions, it is as if the Gurus have said nothing. Isn't that a real tragedy? How would we feel if we did not have Gurbani as a guide? There would be total darkness; we would be walking our spiritual lives totally blind. Bhai sahib, that is how life is for billions of people. No wonder there is so much misery in the world!

Bhai sahib, please do present your articles. We will try our best to translate these into English as best as possible. If possible please use English words for some of the difficult Gurmukhi words (even if this not the exact translation) as it better to get a bit of understanding rather than have no understanding at all. Also, of the 1.2 Million hits each month on this website only a very small number have "Punjabi/Gurmukhi" setup as their native language.

It is our function at SikhiWiki to offer simple and easy to understand explanations of Gurmat. So, we will try our best to explain the concept in English. However, just because we can read Gurbani script, it does not mean we can understand each of the word; we all have to refer to teeka and dictionary all the time to understand some of the words in Gurbani. Also, some of the difficult sections of Gurbani are not in Punjabi and so beyond our native understanding and we have to rely completely on teekas. Despite this, more and more Sikhi concepts are being realised in English and many more non-Punjabis can now understand Gurmat better. Hopefully in coming years, many more section of Gurbani will be available to "the man on the street".

Just to reach a better understanding, I wish to point out why English is so important for us as Sikhs:

Point 1

Nearly 2 Billion of our species (men and women) speak English while probably only 10 million can understand Gurmukhi. The question is do we concentrate on the 10 million Gurmukhi speaking or on the 2,000 million English speaking - The right answer is probably both as they both need to learn the message of our Gurus.

Also, of the 10 million Gurmukhi speaking people - most need to make only a slight effort to have access to volumes of literature by previous learned scholars who have written many hundreds of teekas and other explanations and books in Punjabi and Gurmukhi. However, the 2,000 million English speakers have no way of finding out about the message of the Guru.

Point 2

If we look at other religions like Christianity, Islam, Judaism, etc. their holy scripts are rarely today read and understood in their original language or form. The Bible is mainly read in English, Spanish, etc while the Koran is translated into many languages.

If we want more people to understand Gurbani, we must translate it into other prominent languages. Once we translate the Gurbani principles into English, there are many contributors who will be able to translate these to Spanish (300+ million speakers) , Portuguese (200+ speakers), etc and even Chinese (800+m).

Better explanation required Bhai sahib, I completely accept that it is difficult to translate some of the delicate concept of Gurmat into English. As daily readers to Gurbani, we all know that on a daily basis, we gain more and more understanding of Gurbani; so although we may be reading the same Nitnem Banis, we find "new meaning" as we progress on our spiritual journey. This is the magic of Gurbani!

I also accept that the exact meaning of some tuks is impossible to translate as each word in Gurmukhi may have a board and wide meaning and thus the concept underlying each word can vary greatly and the combination of some of these words needs a few pages of explanation to cover all the possible meanings! For this reason, the traditional translations have been "rushed" with just the main concept that "hit" the translator at the time to the translation; however, we now have more time to look at these translations in more depth and improve on the translations and the various other meanings of the tuk.

Many tuks deal with concepts that are easy to translate. For example: The segment .... ਮਾਨਸ ਕੀ ਜਾਤ ਸਬੈ ਝਕੈ ਪਹਿਚਾਨਬੋ ॥ This does not leave a lot of doubt - it is simple Punjabi which most junior school level readers can understand. It is precise wording which can be easily translated. However, it is a great concept and worthy of bring to the attention of all Sikhs (both Gurmukhi speaking and non-speaker of Punjabi) and in fact the whole world in general.

Let us work on the main concepts

While I accept some of the concept are delicate, the majority are straight forward. Most of Gurbani, as much as 80% deals with simple concepts. I believe that we need to work on these 80% of these concepts. Bhai Sahib, if we can do this, we have made a great leap forward.

Bhai Sahib, sorry for such a long message. I hope it has not inconvenienced you too much. Your brother in Sikhi, Hari Singhtalk 22:37, 5 March 2011 (EST)
