Removed quotation marks

I have had to move your page "Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar BHEL Haridwar" to Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar BHEL Haridwar - That is remove the quotes as otherwise you would not be able to find the page unless the exact quotes were typed - Unfortunately, it appears to have lost the history on this page. Either you can copy to your local computer, delete the page and then re-instate the page to start new history showing you as the author or if this is not important to you, you can leave the page as it is. Sri Guru Granth Sahib - External Links

I read your comments on the above page and agree with what you have said. Please feel free to add the external links to this page or if you do not feel you can do this yourself, then please copy & paste them to the discussion page & I will link them correctly. Your interest and comments are most welcomed --Hari Singh 17:38, 23 Aug 2005 (Central Daylight Time)

Thanks!

WJKF, thanks for the link for the Suraj Parkash download page. I've updated accordingly. I've taken the liberty of changing your additions to the Guru Nanak in Tibet article to integrate them into the main artcile and it make it, hopefully, seamless. Great pic! WJKF --Navroop Singh 06:21, 24 Aug 2005 (Central Daylight Time)

Thank you for adding the picture & description - This is very interesting and a revelation. I wonder if you have any more close ups of the Gurdwaras in this area. If you do, please add them at the bottom of the article with a description and Navroop or myself will adjust them if necessary. I am most grateful. Please continue with this good work! -- Hari Singh 04:20, 29 Aug 2005 (Central Daylight Time)

Gurdwara Map link to article on Sikhiwiki

Hi Guglani, WKWF

I saw your query of the talk page of Gurdwara Map - If I understand your question, then you wish the entry on the Map system to link to the Gurdwara article on Sikhiwiki.

This works through the Name field on Map system. This field has to match exactly the name of the article on Sikhiwiki. Also, the Space character has to be entered as underscore.

If the two titles are different, then clicking on the name field on Map will take you to a new page on Sikhiwiki. Here enter the following:

  #redirect article name

where article name is the title of the Gurdwara artcile in Sikhiwiki.

As an example, checkout the entry highlighted below on the sceenshot of Gurdwaras UK part of Maps for GNNSJ Gurdwara in Birmingham, UK.

If you click on this Gurdwara on Gurdwaras UK, (zoom in to level 7 & find Birmingham and then find this Gurdwara), a small window will pop up as per the screenshot. Then click on the Gurdwara name on this window and this will take you to the article in Sikhiwiki.

I hope this helps - but if not, just give us another shout! Goodluck! --Hari Singh 07:00, 29 May 2006 (Central Daylight Time)

Setting up of more Gurdwaras

Dear Maan yog Guglani Ji, WKWF

I am most grateful to you for setting-up more Gurdwaras on Sikhiwiki - They are absolutely wonderful and I am sure that Bibi ji Upinder Kaur will not object to the use of her photos. I will post a message on her user talk page as well at a later stage.

Please do carry on with this great effort and if I can help in any way please do not hesitate to post the query on my user talk page.

I have made some minor changes to one of your articles - I hope you don't mind. Many thanks and looking forward to more entries by you. --Hari Singh 09:56, 7 June 2006 (Central Daylight Time)

Bhai Vir Singh Article

Respected Guglani Ji

Many thanks for your message. Below are my replies - I hope they will help!!

You asked: I wish to link Bhai Vir Singh article in en.wikpedia to Bhai Vir Singh article in sikhiwiki. How to copy paste this?

Reply: As wikipedia is a GFDL/public Domain/no copyright, you are allowed to use this material provided the source is acknowledged.

1. To link using square brackets use the link:

Bhai Sahib Ji

Bhai Sahib Ji

2. To copy & Paste: Edit the page in wikipedia and select the required text; do a 'copy' of the text. 'Paste' this onto the Sikhiwiki page of a similar name. Make sure you have acknowledged that the information is sourced from Wikipedia.

You Asked: I also like to link photo of Bhai Vir Singh, uploaded as image in sikhiwiki from tribune site,to above page on bhai vir singh in sikhiwiki.please tell me how to do this?

Reply: This is very similar to 2 above: clicking on the photo on Wikipedia or other site will enlarge to original image (if it is reduced version of the picture) - clicking right button & save image and copy this to your local computer. Then upload this to Sikhiwiki in the normal way. Again please acknowledge the source.

You Asked: Further in Category biographical and sub category early gursikh personalities ;some personalities like principal jodh singh,Teja singh,Karam singh historian etc need be added ;how to do that also?

Reply: Edit the article ie jodh singh, etc and at the bottom added the category like this:

or , etc in double square brackets

I hope this helps otherwise just send another mesaage, Goodluck!! and best wished --Hari Singh 11:00, 12 June 2006 (Central Daylight Time)

Problems with the Sikhiwiki Software

Respected Guglani Ji

I have reported a problem with the Sikhiwiki Software and Bhai Gurumustuk Singh is looking at it now. I am sorry but could you please wait until this problem has been resolved in the next day or so.

Please accept my apology for the inconvenience. --Hari Singh 06:59, 16 June 2006 (Central Daylight Time)

  • Thank you for your message. I have sent another email to Gurumustuk Singh who is at the Summer Solstice until 25 June and have listed the following problems:

    * :1a. Previous Gurmukhi characters don't display in display mode. see Mool Mantra- But if you enter them again, they show in preview but when saved they don't display correctly ie:  ? ??? ???? ???? ????? ????? ??????? ???? ????? ????? ???? ??? ??????? ?. So we need to know if the old Gurmukhi text will need to be re-entered or can it be automatically corrected or restored from old data?

    * :1b. Also previously entered extended ASCII characters don't display correctly see Template:Sikh History - The dot character displays as A., Also extended quote marks don't display correctly. However if these characters are entered now, they display correctly. ie:     ? ASHTs newest volunteer- the single quotes, etc all function correctly apart from extended character like the 'dot'.

    * :1c. Do we have a backup of old data so that these pages can be restore from the old data?

    * :2. Cannot added new Gurdwara to the "Map System"

This includes the problem listed by you with the Map system. Hopefully, we will have this resolved after his return. I am sorry that you have been inconvenienced but please continue to be patient as the work you are doing is very useful to the community. --Hari Singh 06:29, 22 June 2006 (Central Daylight Time)

  • Respected Guglani Ji,
I am afraid that the system still does not work fully. I have sent another email to Wikisysop, Gurumustuk Singh. I am hoping that he will have the free time required to resolve this problem.

As you say, the work of logging Sikh History including Gurdwaras can be of great benefit to the Panth and I agree with you wholeheartedly. Unfortunately, for the first time, we appear to have hit a major technical problem with the Sikhiwiki software.

I am hoping that this will be resolved soon. Please try again in a few days to see if the mouse click at a site brings up the entry window.

To delete a Gurdwara site, click on the Gurdwara Nishan Sahib - a window will pop-up. If you look carefully below the window, in very light letters you will find the option to delete the site. I hope this works for you as I have not tested this as I wanted to add (which I cannot do at the moment) & then delete a fictitious site. If not, please send me another message.

Many thanks for your help in this sewa for the Guru's panth. --Hari Singh 14:41, 1 July 2006 (Central Daylight Time)

Great Work

Hi Guglani Ji, WKWF

You are doing great work. I have read the article on Bhai Samund Singh Ragi and its useful and important information about an accomplished Gursikh. Many thanks for bringing this to our attention. I have made a few minor changes, I hope you don't mind.

The image statement has been changed so that the picture appears within the text - I hope you do not object to this change? - It seems to be the style adopted by most writers.

Also, I have created hypertext links so that we can cross check various words. I think this will be useful to newcomers who are not familiar with Sikhi terminology.

Many thanks again and please keep up the good work. --Hari Singh 06:41, 4 July 2006 (Central Daylight Time)

Many thanks for uploading the file: File:Bhai Samund Singh.doc. Unfortunately, due to the encoding, I am unable at present to view this file correctly. If the file was available in PDF format, then I believe that it can be more easily viewed.

I can convert DOC files to PDF file but at present I cannot get the encoding correct on the word file or the file may be corrupted. I will look at this matter & come back to you. Many thanks again.--Hari Singh 10:25, 6 July 2006 (Central Daylight Time)

I have sent a futher message to Gurumustuk Singh, who is the technical person for this software and I will let you know as soon as I have any further information. Many thanks for your reminder. --Hari Singh 17:53, 30 October 2006 (MST)

Thanks for the email. We became aware of the problems recently and are going to figure out the issue. This might take some time because it was created by an outside programmer. --User:Gmustuk 07:56, 31 October 2006 (MST)

Many thanks for your comments. They are very positive and at the same time informative. I make a note of the point made about the low bandwidth in some countries and will address this matter if required. Many thanks again for your help. --Hari Singh 09:28, 7 November 2006 (MST)

guide on how to copy a screen image on to Sikhiwiki

Hi Guglani,

I am sure you are correct about the image. So we will go with your new angle.

Regarding the copying of images from the screen, I use the following procedure:

Once you have the image on the screen, use the "Ctrl" and "Prt Scrn" keys together to capture the picture of your screen. The picture will go to your clipboard.

Then open Paint or similar image manipulating program (I normally use Fireworks, but Paint, Microsoft Picture it, Photoshop all work). Open a new blank large image in Paint. Then select paste from the "Edit" menu at the top. The image will transfer from your clipboard to the new blank screen in Paint.

Now crop the unwanted bits of the screen (if you wish to) and save the picture as a jpg or gif or even png file.

Then upload this file to Sikhiwiki in the normal way.

I hope this helps – if not just send me a message. --Hari Singh 23:32, 4 December 2006 (MST)

  • added the image of Gurdwara at the article - hope its OK --Hari Singh 01:36, 10 December 2006 (MST)

Changes to User page Hpt lucky

Hi Guglani, Many thanks for your concern. I have looked at the various system log and it appears as if these changes are genuine but I will keep a close eye on developments. It appears as if Harpreet may be experimenting with various user messages box – probably from Wikipedia. I agree with you that the content appears very contradictory and I share your concern. If this continues and gets worse, I will send an email to the user. Many thanks for your continued monitoring and keen awareness about SikhiWiki. --Hari Singh 05:23, 8 January 2007 (MST)

Sketch of Hari Singh Nalua that you uploaded

Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji fateh,

I came across the following sketch of Hari Singh Nalua that you have uploaded http://www.sikhiwiki.org/index.php?title=Image:Hari_Singh_Nalwa_1.JPG

The picture shows Hari Singh Nalua telling beads and I have doubts about that. Can you please enlighten me that Hari Singh Nalua used to tell beads? Please provide me some specific and reliable sources from history proving that Hari Singh Nalua used to tell beads. If this is not true, we should not keep this picture on the Hari Singh Nalua page as this is highly misleading.

Please don't mind my words. Its the responsibility of all us to be creative and contributing but yet critical of what we see, read or listen.

Best Regards,

A. S. Aulakh 15:44, 1 February 2007 (MST)

About S. Hari Singh Nalwa telling beeds Image Gur savare Aulakh Ji, I appreciate your concern regarding authenticity of an image about any famous sikh personality. The image in question is from Lahore Museum courtsery F.Azizuddin and is very well placed on sikh-heriatge U.k site as well. You can read more from the source site as per link given under:

http://www.sikh-heritage.co.uk/warriors/HariNalwa/HariNalwa.htm

Hope this satisfies your query. In fact we are used to looking at one side of the picture that Sardar Hari singh Nalwa was a great warrior. We forget that ( Warrior-Saint charachter which sikhi very much preaches) warrior saint characters are a living legend in sikhism. In fact this picture has left a deep impression in my mind that all bravery of Sardar hari singh Nalwa ji and baba dip singh ji shahid ji was result of deep mediatation and simran which they used to practice. --Guglani 05:02, 7 February 2007 (MST)

Veerji, thanks for the reply. My concern was not about the authenticity of the image. An image may be totally authentic but still it may show a person involved in a practice which that person may not have done. I agree with you that these great men from history were deeply religious as well but I have doubts that telling beads is a practice of Sikhism and Hari Singh Nalwa was involved in that. There are numerous quotes in Gurbani which mentions that telling beads is not a practice which does any good. Also, I did not find any reference source where it has been mentioned that Hari Singh Nalwa used to tell beads. When I asked to cite a reference, I was actually requesting to cite a reliable reference from history which specifically talks about practices of Hari Singh Nalwa. As far as muslim artists are concerned, most of them (from the history) considered Sikhs as Hindus (definitely, wrongly!), therefore, their depiction of Sikh historical figures mostly has their imagination of hindu practices. By the time someone can prove that Hari Singh Nalwa used to tell beads, why not use another image from the same site you pointed? Also, please note that I am never against your observation of Hari Singh Nalwa being religious soldier, what I am questioning is that - Did he really used to tell beads? If yes please provide reliable source from history (no paintings please, they are often just imaginations of artists) A. S. Aulakh Talk 02:21, 8 February 2007 (MST)
