Ugardanti(PA: ਉਗ੝ਰਦੰਤੀ) is a composition which is present only in Dasam Granth Bir Patna Sahib and is said to be composed by Guru Gobind Singh. There are 6 Chandds of this bani.

History

  • Bansavalinama is a historical book written in 1769 CE which goes through the history of all the Gurus. In the chapter about Guru Gobind Singh Ji the author, Kesar Singh Chibbar, explains and quotes a few passages from the rare composition Ugardanthi, which was written by Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
  • It is said that this Bani is present in Dasam Granth Bir Patna Sahib, and some people attribute it to be work of Sukkha Singh. but some say that this is misunderstanding that as it is found in his handwritten copy of Sri Dasam Granth and it does not find much other mention in other old hand written Sri Dasam Granth Sahib's. This shows that Ugardanthi did exist and was written about before the time of Sukha Singh.
  • The ‘Ugardanti Bani’ is part of Akali Nihang and Namdhari daily liturgy.
  • Acc. to Nihung Tradition, This bani was given by Guru Gobind Singh to weak person, so that they able to fight war against tyranny.
