SAME QUESTION

I'm not sure if the previous answer was correct.

When 9th Patshah were born, they were either given the name Tyal/Tial/Tyial/Tiyal Mal or Tiag/Tyag/Tiyag/Tyiag Mal or Tegh Mal. At 13-14 after a battle they were given the name of Tegh Bahadur. But when the meditated for such a long time at Bakala in a cellar (bhora) they began to be called Baba Tegha.

Now whats their real birth name?

TYAL MAL? TYAG MAL? TEGH MAL? Sunnybondsinghjalwehra 07:58, 20 April 2008 (MDT)

I am not sure where did the name Tyal Mal come from or of its meaning. According to my info, he was named Tyag Mal on birth. Renamed Tegh Bahadur at the age of 13-14yrs by Guru Hargobind G after that battle with Painde Khan. urgurinder

Tyag Mal

"Tyag" or ਤਿਆਗ s  means "Relinquishment, abandonment or renunciation" and "Mal" or ਮਾਲ s  means wealth, possesion, goods so the term "Tyag Mal" bluntly means "King of Renunciation"; appropriate as the Guru sacrificed everything for the principles of Dharam!

Hope this helps. However, the name has also been quoted as "Tegh Mal" in some places and "Tegh" or ਤੇਗ s  means "sword".

The first name seems more appropriate but that does not mean that this was the name actually given. I don't have any old Gurmukhi text about the Guru; perhaps someone can check this and added a comment here? Many thanks, Hari Singhtalk 02:45, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
