Saram Khand is the third level or sphere of spiritual endeavour or development. "Saram" means "modesty" or "humility". Gurbani tells us that there are five such levels or domains of reality in human development. The Five Realms described in the Bani are:

In Saram khand, the person becomes modest and humble in their outlook and the realisation of the Almighty is increased. They begin to understand the deeper reality within the Guru's Word and humility begins to dominate their persona. They shed the last remnants of their ego which still afflict them in spite of experiencing strong emotions of humility in the previous stage of Gian Khand. Armed now with humility and modesty, the person is able to develop an intuitive consciousness, a sharper and more capable intellect and deeper understanding of the mind. The Guru tells us that only when a person has attained this stage of awareness can the consciousness of the spiritual warriors and the persona of Siddhas (spiritual perfect beings) be reached.

If the sense of awe and wonder is not accompanied or followed by discipline, the experience might become a mere emotion, something remembered with nostalgia but having no permanent worth. To become worthy of receiving the divine grace, one must chisel one’s surati (consciousness) which is a unifying thread for all human faculties. This chiselling of intellect and wisdom would erase even the subtlest layers of ego from one’s mind. Beyond, there is another world composed of material yet more suksham. This world is also known as Rupa. Guru Nanak Dev Ji writes, “Saram Khand ki bani rupe”. Here only those people reach who have learnt to do without any motivating desire.

Sharam Khand is essential for Bhagats before they can enter Karam Khand and Sach Khand. Sharam Khand is like a prep Khand for entering Karam Khand and Sach Khand. This Khand is extremely beautiful. Everything there is just too beautiful to describe. At the lower end are those who cultivated affection and at the higher level those who possess, besides affection, devotion also. Here every thought takes up a form as it is expressed.

It is a world where pure knowledge, wisdom, intellect and understanding belong.

Tithai ghariai surat mat man buddh,
Tithai ghairai sur sidha ki suddh.

It is here that the skill of men of supernatural powers is fashioned.

.....

Saram kẖand kī baṇī rūp. Ŧithai gẖĝṛaṯ gẖaṛīai bahuṯ anūp.
In the realm of humility, the Word is Beauty. Forms of incomparable beauty are fashioned there.
Ŧĝ kīĝ galĝ kathīĝ nĝ jĝhi. Jė ko kahai picẖẖai pacẖẖuṯĝė.
These things cannot be described. One who tries to speak of these shall regret the attempt.
Ŧithai gẖaṛīai suraṯ maṯ man buḝẖ. Ŧithai gẖaṛīai surĝ siḝẖĝ kī suḝẖ. ॥36॥
The intuitive consciousness, intellect and understanding of the mind are shaped there. The consciousness of the spiritual warriors and the Siddhas, the beings of spiritual perfection, are shaped there. ॥36॥
