"left for her/his heavenly abode" is the terminology used predominately in Eastern cultures to better describe the journey of the soul into the next world when the body perishes. This is deemed to better describe the actual reality which is outlined in the holy scriptures of the East for the end of physical body; they believe that it is a better description than "dead" or "death" as the soul is not considered to die when the body dies.

The soul is considered to be the enduring entity; the connection between the "person/s" we have known in this world and the longer lasting "atma" or "light of that person" (soul).
