Horoscope
The following article lists verses of Gurbani relating to horoscope and astrology. It should be seen from the message in the Guru Granth Sahib that one should not believe in any of these; there is no logical, scientific or spiritual basis for these practices. It is just a bit of fun and meaningless play to pass ones time! It is much more beneficial to remember the Lord and meditate on His Name.
| ਵੇਤਗਾ ਆਪੇ ਵਤੈ ॥ ਵਟਿ ਧਾਗੇ ਅਵਰਾ ਘਤੈ ॥ ਲੈ ਭਾੜਿ ਕਰੇ ਵੀਆਹ ॥ ਕਢਿ ਕਾਗਲ ਦਸੇ ਰਾਹ ॥ ਸਣਿ ਵੇਖਹ ਲੋਕਾ ਝਹ ਵਿਡਾਣ ॥ ਮਨਿ ਅੰਧਾ ਨਾਉ ਸਜਾਣ ॥੪॥ |
| veṯgĝ ĝpe vaṯai. vat ḝẖĝge avrĝ gẖaṯai. Lai bẖĝṛ kare vī▫ĝhu. Kadẖ kĝgal ḝase rĝhu. Suṇ vekẖhu lokĝ ehu vidĝṇ. Man anḝẖĝ nĝ▫o sujĝṇ. (4) |
| The Brahmin himself goes to the world hereafter without a sacred thread. Twisting the threads, he puts them on others. He takes payment for performing marriages; reading their horoscopes, he shows them the way. |
| ਗਣਿ ਗਣਿ ਜੋਤਕ ਕਾਂਡੀ ਕੀਨੀ ॥ ਪੜੈ ਸਣਾਵੈ ਤਤ ਨ ਚੀਨੀ ॥
ਸਭਸੈ ਊਪਰਿ ਗਰ ਸਬਦ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥ ਹੋਰ ਕਥਨੀ ਬਦਉ ਨ ਸਗਲੀ ਛਾਰ ॥੨॥ |
| Gaṇ gaṇ joṯak kĝʼndī kīnī. Paṛai suṇĝvai ṯaṯ na cẖīnī.
Sabẖsai ūpar gur sabaḝ bīcẖĝr. Hor kathnī baḝa▫o na saglī cẖẖĝr. (2) |
| Calculating and counting, the astrologer draws the horoscope. He studies it and announces it, but he does not understand reality. Understand, that the Word of the Guru's Shabad is above all. Do not speak of anything else; it is all just ashes. (2) |
