देवी देवा पूजीऐ भाई किआ मागउ किआ देहि ॥
Ḏevī ḏevā pūjī▫ai bẖā▫ī ki▫ā māga▫o ki▫ā ḏėh.
Why worship gods and goddesses, O Siblings of Destiny? What can we ask of them? What can they give us?
ਪਾਹਣੁ ਨੀਰਿ ਪਖਾਲੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਬੂਡਹਿ ਤੇਹਿ ॥੬॥
पाहणु नीरि पखालीऐ भाई जल महि बूडहि तेहि ॥६॥
Pāhaṇ nīr pakẖālī▫ai bẖā▫ī jal mėh būḏẖėh ṯehi. ||6||
The stone gods are washed with water, O Siblings of Destiny, but they just sink in the water. ||6||

ਮਃ ੧ ॥ मः १ ॥ Mėhlā 1. First Mehl:

ਹਿੰਦੂ ਮੂਲੇ ਭੂਲੇ ਅਖੁਟੀ ਜਾਂਹੀ ॥ हिंदू मूले भूले अखुटी जांही ॥ Hinḏū mūle bẖūle akẖutī jāʼnhī. The Hindus have forgotten the Primal Lord; they are going the wrong way.

ਨਾਰਦਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਸਿ ਪੂਜ ਕਰਾਂਹੀ ॥ नारदि कहिआ सि पूज करांही ॥ Nāraḏ kahi▫ā sė pūj karāʼnhī. As Naarad instructed them, they are worshipping idols.

ਅੰਧੇ ਗੁੰਗੇ ਅੰਧ ਅੰਧਾਰੁ ॥ अंधे गुंगे अंध अंधारु ॥ Anḏẖe gunge anḏẖ anḏẖār. They are blind and mute, the blindest of the blind.

ਪਾਥਰੁ ਲੇ ਪੂਜਹਿ ਮੁਗਧ ਗਵਾਰ ॥ पाथरु ले पूजहि मुगध गवार ॥ Pāthar le pūjėh mugaḏẖ gavār. The ignorant fools pick up stones and worship them.

ਓਹਿ ਜਾ ਆਪਿ ਡੁਬੇ ਤੁਮ ਕਹਾ ਤਰਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥ ओहि जा आपि डुबे तुम कहा तरणहारु ॥२॥ Ohi jā āp dube ṯum kahā ṯaraṇhār. ||2|| But when those stones themselves sink, who will carry you across? ||2||

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ सलोक महला १ ॥ Salok mėhlā 1. Shalok, First Mehl:

ਘਰਿ ਨਾਰਾਇਣੁ ਸਭਾ ਨਾਲਿ ॥ घरि नाराइणु सभा नालि ॥ Gẖar nārā▫iṇ sabẖā nāl. In your home, is the Lord God, along with all your other gods

ਪੂਜ ਕਰੇ ਰਖੈ ਨਾਵਾਲਿ ॥ पूज करे रखै नावालि ॥ Pūj kare rakẖai nāvāl. You wash your stone gods and worship them.

ਕੁੰਗੂ ਚੰਨਣੁ ਫੁਲ ਚੜਾਏ ॥ कुंगू चंनणु फुल चड़ाए ॥ Kungū cẖannaṇ ful cẖaṛā▫e. You offer saffron, sandalwood and flowers.

ਪੈਰੀ ਪੈ ਪੈ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਮਨਾਏ ॥ पैरी पै पै बहुतु मनाए ॥ Pairī pai pai bahuṯ manā▫e. Falling at their feet, you try so hard to appease them.

ਮਾਣੂਆ ਮੰਗਿ ਮੰਗਿ ਪੈਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੈ ਖਾਇ ॥ माणूआ मंगि मंगि पैन्है खाइ ॥ Māṇū▫ā mang mang painĥai kẖā▫e. Begging, begging from other people, you get things to wear and eat.

ਅੰਧੀ ਕੰਮੀ ਅੰਧ ਸਜਾਇ ॥ अंधी कमी अंध सजाइ ॥ Anḏẖī kammī anḏẖ sajā▫e. For your blind deeds, you will be blindly punished.

ਭੁਖਿਆ ਦੇਇ ਨ ਮਰਦਿਆ ਰਖੈ ॥ भुखिआ देइ न मरदिआ रखै ॥ Bẖukẖi▫ā ḏe▫e na marḏi▫ā rakẖai. Your idol does not feed the hungry, or save the dying.

ਅੰਧਾ ਝਗੜਾ ਅੰਧੀ ਸਥੈ ॥੧॥ अंधा झगड़ा अंधी सथै ॥१॥ Anḏẖā jẖagṛā anḏẖī sathai. ||1|| The blind assembly argues in blindness. ||1|| (1241. Guru Granth Sahib)

ਅਬੇ ਤਬੇ ਕੀ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਕਿਉ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ अबे तबे की चाकरी किउ दरगह पावै ॥ Abe ṯabe kī cẖākrī ki▫o ḏargėh pāvai. Serving this and that person, how can one obtain the Lord's Court?

ਪਥਰ ਕੀ ਬੇੜੀ ਜੇ ਚੜੈ ਭਰ ਨਾਲਿ ਬੁਡਾਵੈ ॥੪॥ पथर की बेड़ी जे चड़ै भर नालि बुडावै ॥४॥ Pathar kī beṛī je cẖaṛai bẖar nāl budāvai. ||4|| If someone embarks on a boat of stone, he shall drown with its cargo. ||4||

ਪੜਿ ਪੁਸਤਕ ਸੰਧਿਆ ਬਾਦੰ ॥ पड़ि पुसतक संधिआ बादं ॥ Paṛ pusṯak sanḏẖi▫ā bāḏaʼn. You read your books and say your prayers, and then engage in debate;

ਸਿਲ ਪੂਜਸਿ ਬਗੁਲ ਸਮਾਧੰ ॥ सिल पूजसि बगुल समाधं ॥ Sil pūjas bagul samāḏẖaʼn. you worship stones and sit like a stork, pretending to be in Samaadhi.

ਮੁਖਿ ਝੂਠ ਬਿਭੂਖਣ ਸਾਰੰ ॥ मुखि झूठ बिभूखण सारं ॥ Mukẖ jẖūṯẖ bibẖūkẖaṇ sāraʼn. With your mouth you utter falsehood, and you adorn yourself with precious decorations;

ਤ੍ਰੈਪਾਲ ਤਿਹਾਲ ਬਿਚਾਰੰ ॥ त्रैपाल तिहाल बिचारं ॥ Ŧaraipāl ṯihāl bicẖāraʼn. you recite the three lines of the Gayatri three times a day.

ਗਲਿ ਮਾਲਾ ਤਿਲਕੁ ਲਿਲਾਟੰ ॥ गलि माला तिलकु लिलाटं ॥ Gal mālā ṯilak lilātaʼn. Around your neck is a rosary, and on your forehead is a sacred mark;

ਦੁਇ ਧੋਤੀ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਕਪਾਟੰ ॥ दुइ धोती बसत्र कपाटं ॥ Ḏu▫e ḏẖoṯī basṯar kapātaʼn. upon your head is a turban, and you wear two loin cloths.

ਜੇ ਜਾਣਸਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰ ਕਰਮੰ ॥ जे जाणसि ब्रहमं करमं ॥ Je jāṇas barahmaʼn karmaʼn. If you knew the nature of God,

ਸਭਿ ਫੋਕਟ ਨਿਸਚਉ ਕਰਮੰ ॥ सभि फोकट निसचउ करमं ॥ Sabẖ fokat niscẖa▫o karmaʼn. you would know that all of these beliefs and rituals are in vain.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਹਚਉ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥ कहु नानक निहचउ धिआवै ॥ Kaho Nānak nihcẖa▫o ḏẖi▫āvai. Says Nanak, meditate with deep faith;

ਵਿਣੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਵਾਟ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੨॥ विणु सतिगुर वाट न पावै ॥२॥ viṇ saṯgur vāt na pāvai. ||2|| without the True Guru, no one finds the Way. ||2|
