Guru Granth Shaib Ji and Sikh History

This article in the concern and understanding of meat according to Sri Guru Granth Shaib Ji, and the historical factors according to Historical Granths of the Khalsa Panth, which are Panth proven by Akaal Thakat Shaib, and a large part of the sikh history from 1700 century to 1800.
This article is based entirely on the views expressed by the Sikh Gurus in Gurbani – and does not rely on any outside views. Guru's message is clear and unambiguous and anyone who understands Gurmukhi will be able to come to their own conclusion.

Gurbani i.e. writings within the Sri Guru Granth Sahib (or SGGS) are the most important spiritual guidance for a Sikh as the Bani is regarded as the Guru or ultimate "Spiritual teacher" for the Sikh. ("Bani guru, guru hai bani vich bani amrit saaray."… "Bani is Guru, and Guru is the Bani. Within Bani, all Ambrosial Nectars are found." sggs p982)

The Shabads taken from Sri Guru Granth Shaib Ji, which are most discussed in the Panth, and have used the arths from theeka and other sources. NOTE: The English arths given on-line are not the real arths, they cannot express the realm behind Gurbani in 1 line, because it takes more to understand something spiritually and the depth of the real meaning . I have read many people’s views and articles on this topic and they all have missed something out; no one has ever attacked the real realm which gurbani is trying to state.
To be a Sikh is to regard the SGGS as ones primary spiritual guide. The message within the Guru Granth Sahib is the universal and moral guide for all of humanity and in particular for all Sikhs. No Hukamnama (order, directive or decree) by anyone other than the Sikh Guru can move the Guru's Sikh away from this stand ("Hukam rajaa-ee chalnaa naanak likhi-aa naal.." …. " O Nanak, it is written that you shall obey the Hukam of His Command, and walk in the Way of His Will". sggs p1).

Gurbani offers clear guidance on this important issue. The following quotes from Varan Bhai Gurdas and Sri Guru Granth Sahib give the Sikhs clear and concise direction on what a Sikh should eat or not eat and other aspect of this important facet of a person's spiritual and moral life.

Sri Guru Granth Shaib Ang – 1289
Background
First Mehl:

Bhai Gurdas Ji was the first scribe of the Adi Granth. He was responsible for writing the first compilation of the Holy Granth. While Guru Arjan Dev ji dictated the Bani, Bhai Sahib put the words to paper. He is recognised as the first "Scholar of Sikhism" and his own writings, called the Varan Bhai Gurdas were called by Guru Arjan Dev, "the Key to the Sri Guru Granth Sahib". The Varan also offer clear secondary guidance on this subject to the Sikh as well.
The fools argue about flesh and meat, but they know nothing about meditation and spiritual wisdom. The foolish pandit, who is anti of meat, he himself says “meat meat” and starts pointless debates and arguements with others, but he doesn't know anything about knowledge and wisdom.

Despite this article outlining the fact that eating meat is not in strict compliance with the principles of Sikhism, it should be very clear to all that whether one eats meat or not, is only one aspect of the life of a Sikh. So no greater importance should be given to this issue at the expense of the many other issues which are of equal importance to a Sikh. It is not an issue where one should engage in heated argument - Read Gurbani and make your own decision on this matter.

This topic is very emotive and many Sikhs who cannot read or understand the original Gurmukhi text are unable to understand the Guru's clear message and will use their own Manmat (entrenched personal stand) or views of other academics to propagate their own views or views of other who have not relied on the Guru's word. When deciding on this subject or any other issue about Dharam (righteous living), a Sikh should rely only on Gurbani and disregard views of others. ("Saṯgur kī banī sat sat kar jĝnhu gursikhahu har kartĝ ĝp muhhu kadhĝė." …  "O GurSikhs, know that the Bani, is true, absolutely true. The Creator Lord Himself causes the Guru to chant it." sggs p308 )
The pandit should ask himself and think (Veechare) – what is meat ? and what is the difference between Green vegetables? and from eating which leads to sins ?

Shabads from Guru Granth Sahib
This section below lists shabads directly from Guru Granth Sahib which have a connection with meat and related matters. They are further sub-divided into sub-sections for easy of reference:

ਗੈਂਡਾ ਮਾਰਿ ਹੋਮ ਜਗ ਕੀਏ ਦੇਵਤਿਆ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੇ ॥
Shabads with the word "Kill"
In the old times people, would kill a rhinoceros, as according to the habit/tradition of Devtas, and would do Jagg( Hindu ritual Fest) and make a feast of the burnt offering.
The following shabads have the word kill in the translation:

Shabad page 723
The person who acts as a vegetarian (Renounce Meat) – ਮਾਸ ਦਾ ਤਿਆਗੀ – Whenever he smells meat or come near it, they close their noses and say they they can smell meat.  But these same hypocrite people, devour men at night (Means kill and think bad within their minds, to hurt and destroy in a physical and a mental way.)

O human being, whatever you can see with your eyes, shall perish. <br>
O Nanak, What is the point of explaining and making a Blind person understand? If someone tries to make him understand they still don’t get it, due to their blind, it is pointless because they won’t understand it.
The world eats dead carcasses, living by neglect and greed. ((Pause)) <br>

Guru Shaib Ji here says, the lord created all the creation from 4 sources, if killing an animal which is born from the womb is a sin, then why it is it not a sin to eat things which are born from the earth (Fruit, Vegetables’ ,etc) they also have the same light. According to the pangti the light is the same, therefore a sikh cant eat anything?  Many people say meat is eating a innocent for taste, then why do we eat vegetables and fruits and weath when gurbani is saying it has the same light. Something to think about

Today vegetarians, eat bacteria in yoghurt and other substances, yet call them self’s vegetarians? But you’re also eating something living which is moving; you say no to meat but yet eat living bacteria? Is that fair? Why are you practising hypocrisy? If you were not to eat, then don’t kill any, not even the products from earth, because they have the same light. But why this pakand, If a goat is innocent, then with the same light fruits are as well, and other foods.

This Pangti is used by Vegetarians to say Kabeer Ji is saying I would rather eat Khichri rather than cutting a neck for meat? But these are not done correctly, arths don’t go to the Spiritual life and Atmik side of the Gurmat, because it is based dunaviely.
The following Shabads are from the Varan by Bhai Gurdas ji, whose Bani is referred to as the "Key" to the Sri Guru Granth Sahib:

The backround of this Shabad is Shastars (Hindu Dharam Granth) and Kabeer Ji is talking to Muniyan.

So this shabad is mostly used to say Sikhs shouldn’t eat meat, but are we Hindus? It’s the Sikhs choice if he wants to be a pandit and practise those things first. It is important we look at the dept of Gurmat veechare, not just read 1 line English arths and make our conclusions.
You say that the One Lord is in all, so why do you kill chickens?

Guru Sahib is telling a Mulla that you try to impress Lord by making a sacrifice of a Chicken, but you don’t know that a chicken is God's creation so why u sacafising something which is already his? Why not sacrifice your mind by cutting it down with Gain Khadag?

The creator is everywhere, from the bacteria inside your lungs to an elephant outside, in earth and water. Guru shaibs main motive is to wake up the mulla who is doing pakand in the Lord's name by killing the chicken. It talks about hypocrite of a Mulla, who is lost in pakand. Who believes that salvation is obtained by killing a chicken, and making a sacrifice to god, but why are you giving something to god who is already his?

You kill living beings, and call it a righteous action.
Tell me, brother, what would you call an unrighteous action?
You call yourself the most excellent sage; then who would you call a butcher?

In this Shabad Guru Shaib Ji is talking to a Pandit, Guru Shaib Ji says to a pandit,
Guru Ji says O Pandit, you Hypocrite, on one side you slander and call a person who eats meat, but you yourself make a sacrifice on the Hindu Ritual Day called “Jagg”.

And you clam this to be a religious and righteous then tell me what a unrighteous action is when you do it yourself? Why do you call the people who eat meat or sell it bad, if a Pandit in a form of saint kills in the name of religion? Pandit, who says bad things to others, that they eat meat or sell yet himself does it in the name of religion. Pandit is a hypocrite, because he does something which he says is bad, and he slanders others for so Guru sahib Ji challenges him and asks him why?

Kabeer, I went to Mecca - how many times, Kabeer?
O Lord, what is the problem with me? You have not spoken to me with Your Mouth.
Kabeer, they oppress living beings and kill them, and call it proper.
When the Lord calls for their account, what will their condition be?

In this Bhagat Kabeer Ji talks about how Muslims do animal sacrifice, Kabeer Ji says I went to Mecca many times, but what is the problem that the lord didn’t talk to me? Kabeer Ji says what fault is he looking in me? So he says, by doing Hajj and Kurbani (Sacrifice) one didn’t get salvation, meaning that the lord is not impressed by doing these things.  Because he is inside us “Man Tu Jot Saroop Ha, Apna Mool Pashaan” – Without Gain there could be no gain, no matter how many Hajjs or Kurbania you do.

- Ang 29,
The Guru has lit the brilliant light of spiritual wisdom, and the darkness of ignorance has been dispelled.

O Kabeer, those people who sacrifice animals and say this is proven and has been written as a Kurbani to make the lord happy , in other words the Muslims who are blind in thinking that by killing animals the lord will be happy, that concept is contradicted by kabeer Ji, because without Naam/Gain there is no salvation.  So kabeer ji says when the lord asks for their account, what have they done on the earth, How many times did you remembered him, prayed from the bottom of the heart, what will these people answer ? Who have just killed and sacrificed animals in the name of the lord, this kurbani or sacrifice will not impress him and there condition will be bad.  Only true Wisdom will.

To conclude this section of the article, “ Guru Granth and Meat “ I have tried with Satgurus blessing, to anylase the misconception which are raised, this is mostly to the poor arths done using English Text. And most arths are done with out the backround knowedlge of the shabad. So I hope it makes things clear, if  you would like anymore shabads discussed about, do contact me. Please also correct me if I have made so I can also learn more from fellow Sikhs.  Please do read the next part of the Article.

                                                            Meat and Sikh History.

Sikh history is a very important factor which we must consider when talking about a topic like Meat, now the question is did the Puratan Sikhs use meat, and is it written in Rehitnamas from Guru sahibs time? We must closely analyse them. To my research I haven’t found any sikh historical Granth from 1700 – late 1800s, which contradicted the eating of meat in Sikhi.

To all these historical Sikh texts such as

Sri Gur Sobha by Kavi Saina Singh (1741),
Gur Rattan Mala by Sahib Singh (1734),

Naveen Panth Prakash by Giani Gian Singh (1878),

As well as the puratan rehit nama’s all have references to Jhatka being accepted within the Sikh code of conduct (Rehit Maryada), or the clear ban on eating flesh that has been killed according to the Muslim ritual of Halal, also known as Kutha within the Sikh community.

The term Jhatka is also mentioned by Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha, a noted Sikh historian and theologian, defines 'Chatka' (also referred to as 'Jhatka'/'Jatka'/'Jhhatka') as:'Chatka - Speak 'Sat Sri Akal' [Sikh battle chant] and decapitate the head with one blow of the weapon.'(Mahan Kosh, Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha, 1926)

Bhai Dessa Singh Jis Rhehitnama, is a Panth Parvaan Rehitnama and Bhai Shaib ji states:
The flesh of a goat/animal may be eaten provided the goat/animal is killed with a single blow well away from a langar, but all other meat(halal, other types) is forbidden. Always wash your hands before eating. Take food when you are hungry. Never eat alone. Share your food with other Singhs. Gather many Singhs and give them food. ('Rehitnameh', by Piara Singh Padam, Pa. 148)
A rehatnama is a written sikh code of conduct approved by guru ji for sikhs to follow,
'If you eat a goat then do so after Chatka only'

Rattan Singh Bhangu (Author of Pracheen Panth Prakash (1804) was a Sikh nobleman who wrote the history of Sikh struggles and rise to power in North India. In 1740 Bhai Mehtab Singh Bhangoo killed Massa Ranghar and helped to liberate the Golden Temple from the Mughal clutches. He later achieved martyrdom in Lahore. In 1841 his grandson Bhai Rattan Singh Bhangu wrote the first documented history of Sikhs, Prachin Panth Parkash.

Rattan Singh Bhangu writes about the instructions Guru Gobind Singh Ji gave to his Sikhs after administering Khandey Di Pahul.

[Satiguru instructed that] they should conduct 'Jhatka' of goats, but should not go near dead animals and Kutha [halal meat]. Take good care of your Kes [long hair],do not cut your hair with razors.

Further he writes: Page 134
"Ja pahunchyo vahi singh sajana, Agai lagyo hut Khalsai Deewana
pardhain shabad au bajai Rababa, Sukkhai ghotan bhunnain Mah Parshadi"

The Khalsa Singhs were holding a religious congregation.
Gurbani hymns were being recited to the accompaniment of music,
As well as Shaheedi Deg were being grounded and meat roasted.

"Kou Ghodian ko Malash karai, ko shastar Manj ujjal kar dharai.
Kou teer ko bandook chalavhi. kou ungal par chakkar ghumâvahi."

The poet, a convert to Sikhism from the barber caste, was born at Anandpur in 1768 and completed the work in 1797 when he was barely twenty-nine. SRI GURPARTAP SURAJ PARKASH, popularly known as the Suraj Parkash is detailed work of 51,829 verses describing the lives of the last nine Sikh Gurus and Banda Bahadur. It was finished in 1843 by Bhai Santokh Singh. It is a sequel to his own Nanak Prakash, describing the life of the first Guru.

SRI GURU PANTH PRAKASH, popularly Panth Prakash, by Giani Gian Singh 1880, is a history of the Sikhs in verse. As the title suggests, it is an account of the rise and development of the Guru Panth, i.e. the Klialsa or the Sikh community. Sri Guru Panth Prakash covers a vast span of Sikh history from Guru Nanak (1469-1539), the founder of the faith, to the annexation of the Punjab by the British and death of Maharaja Duleep Singh. It is the same book in which we first find the shabad, "Sab Sikhan Ko Hukam Hai, Guru Maniyo Granth".

The following quotes deal with the Khalsa's lineage and some of the Rehat given to the Khalsa.

Always partake in hunting, [practice] killing deer and then eat your hunt.

Ride horses and wear all sorts of weapons.

Learn Shastar Bidya [the science of Arms], and chant Akaal Akaal

[Naveen Panth Prakash, pg. 1589, Vol. 3]

On the field of battle, the foremost Sikh historian of the 'Missal' (confederacy) period (1735-1770's),

Shaheed Bhai Rattan Singh Bhangu, states:
'How can vegetarianism work where there is constant war? How can a Vegetarian Panth survive there? How can vegetarians survive there, where there is daily war, daily bloodshed? There you might have to survive by drinking the enemy's blood. There are such difficult circumstances. In Banda Bahadur Bairagi's Panth were Sadhus. How could they know of this?'

To conclude, I have try to give a good explanation of use of meat in Sikh History, there are many more texts which support the same ideology of Jhatka and Hunting. Many people will say they don’t agree with historians, but who are we without them? We can’t even prove our existence; we can even prove the Guru Gaddi of Guru Granth without it, Khanda Di Paul, Khalsa and the life styles of Puratan Singhs etc. If you have anything which you want to question please do let me know, and if you have any proof or evidence which proves this research wrong, do let me know or write a article in response, I would love to learn from another Gursikh.

What does Gurbani say?

Background

Bhai Gurdas Ji was the first scribe of the Adi Granth. He was responsible for writing the first compilation of the Holy Granth. While Guru Arjan Dev ji dictated the Bani, Bhai Sahib put the words to paper. He is recognised as the first "Scholar of Sikhism" and his own writings, called the Varan Bhai Gurdas were called by Guru Arjan Dev, "the Key to the Sri Guru Granth Sahib". The Varan also offer clear secondary guidance on this subject to the Sikh as well.

The fools argue about flesh and meat, but they know nothing about meditation and spiritual wisdom. What is called meat, and what is called green vegetables? What leads to sin?
It was the habit of the gods to kill rhinoceros, and make a feast of the burnt offering. Those who renounce meat, and hold their noses when sitting near it, devour men at night.
They practice hypocrisy, and make a show before other people, but they do not understand anything about meditation or spiritual wisdom. O Nanak, what can be said to the blind people? They cannot answer, or even understand what is said.

Lion catches a goat; As the goat is dying, it begins to laugh. In awe the lion asks, why are you laughing?
Humbly the goat says: Our sons are destroyed (castrated). We only eat wild plants and suffer being slayed & skinned alive.
Those who cut our throats and eat our flesh, what will be their plight?
Proud and arrogant their bodies are a waste; inedible and fruitless. All who come to the world will eventually die.

Even if Putana (female demon) got liberated that does not mean that poisoning some one is a good act.
Garika (a prostitute) was liberated but one should not enter other's house and invite trouble.
Since Valmiki got blessed, one should not adopt the way of highway robbery.
A bird catcher is also said to be liberated, but we should not catch hold of the leg of others by using snares.
If Sadhana, the butcher got across (the world ocean), we should not put ourselves to harm by killing others.
Ship takes across both iron and gold but still their forms and colours are not the same.
In fact, living on such hopes is a bad life style.

Pauri 21 (One having no Guru is uncontrollable)

The butcher slaughters the goat; salts the meat and strings it on a skewer.
While being killed the goat laughingly says: I have come to this condition for grazing only coarse leaves of arid wild plants.
What will be the plight of those who cutting the throat with a knife eat the flesh of animals?
The perverted taste of the tongue is harmful for the teeth and damages the mouth.
The one who eyes another’s wealth or body or slanders becomes a poisonous Amphisbaena.
This snake is controlled by the Guru's mantra but the Guru-less manmukh never listens to this glorious mantra.
The Manmukh blindly moves ahead, never realizing the approaching deep pit ahead!

(note: Amphisbaena is a mythical serpent having a head at each end of its body.)

Kabir On Meat Issue

Do not say that the Vedas, the Bible and the Koran are false. Those who do not contemplate them are false. You say that the One Lord is in all, so why do you kill chickens? ||1||

O Mullah, tell me: is this God's Justice? The doubts of your mind have not been dispelled. ||1||Pause||

You seize a living creature, and then bring it home and kill its body; you have killed only the clay. The light of the soul passes into another form. So tell me, what have you killed? ||2||

And what good are your purifications? Why do you bother to wash your face? And why do you bother to bow your head in the mosque? Your heart is full of hypocrisy; what good are your prayers or your pilgrimage to Mecca? ||3||

You are impure; you do not understand the Pure Lord. You do not know His Mystery. Says Kabeer, you have missed out on paradise; your mind is set on hell. ||4||4||
