ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
घर महि ठाकुरु नदरि न आवै ॥
Gẖar mėh ṯẖākur naḏar na āvai.
Within the home of his own self, he does not even come to see his Lord and Master.
ਗਲ ਮਹਿ ਪਾਹਣੁ ਲੈ ਲਟਕਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
गल महि पाहणु लै लटकावै ॥१॥
Gal mėh pāhaṇ lai latkāvai. ||1||
And yet, around his neck, he hangs a stone god. ||1||
ਭਰਮੇ ਭੂਲਾ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਫਿਰਤਾ ॥
भरमे भूला साकतु फिरता ॥
Bẖarme bẖūlā sākaṯ firṯā.
The faithless cynic wanders around, deluded by doubt.
ਨੀਰੁ ਬਿਰੋਲੈ ਖਪਿ ਖਪਿ ਮਰਤਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
नीरु बिरोलै खपि खपि मरता ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Nīr birolai kẖap kẖap marṯā. ||1|| rahā▫o.
He churns water, and after wasting his life away, he dies. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਸੁ ਪਾਹਣ ਕਉ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਕਹਤਾ ॥
जिसु पाहण कउ ठाकुरु कहता ॥
Jis pāhaṇ ka▫o ṯẖākur kahṯā.
That stone, which he calls his god,
ਓਹੁ ਪਾਹਣੁ ਲੈ ਉਸ ਕਉ ਡੁਬਤਾ ॥੨॥
ओहु पाहणु लै उस कउ डुबता ॥२॥
Oh pāhaṇ lai us ka▫o dubṯā. ||2||
that stone pulls him down and drowns him. ||2||
ਗੁਨਹਗਾਰ ਲੂਣ ਹਰਾਮੀ ॥
गुनहगार लूण हरामी ॥
Gunahgār lūṇ harāmī.
O sinner, you are untrue to your own self;
ਪਾਹਣ ਨਾਵ ਨ ਪਾਰਗਿਰਾਮੀ ॥੩॥
पाहण नाव न पारगिरामी ॥३॥
Pāhaṇ nāv na pārgiramī. ||3||
a boat of stone will not carry you across. ||3||
ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
गुर मिलि नानक ठाकुरु जाता ॥
Gur mil Nānak ṯẖākur jāṯā.
Meeting the Guru, O Nanak, I know my Lord and Master.
ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਮਹੀਅਲਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ॥੪॥੩॥੯॥
जलि थलि महीअलि पूरन बिधाता ॥४॥३॥९॥
Jal thal mahī▫al pūran biḏẖāṯā. ||4||3||9||
The Perfect Architect of Destiny is pervading and permeating the water, the land and the sky. ||4||3||9||

ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥ घर महि ठाकुरु नदरि न आवै ॥ Gẖar mėh ṯẖākur naḏar na āvai. Within the home of his own self, he does not even come to see his Lord and Master.

ਗਲ ਮਹਿ ਪਾਹਣੁ ਲੈ ਲਟਕਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ गल महि पाहणु लै लटकावै ॥१॥ Gal mėh pāhaṇ lai latkāvai. ||1|| And yet, around his neck, he hangs a stone god. ||1||

ਭਰਮੇ ਭੂਲਾ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਫਿਰਤਾ ॥ भरमे भूला साकतु फिरता ॥ Bẖarme bẖūlā sākaṯ firṯā. The faithless cynic wanders around, deluded by doubt.

ਤਟ ਤੀਰਥ ਦੇਵ ਦੇਵਾਲਿਆ ਕੇਦਾਰੁ ਮਥੁਰਾ ਕਾਸੀ ॥ तट तीरथ देव देवालिआ केदारु मथुरा कासी ॥ Ŧat ṯirath ḏev ḏevāli▫ā keḏār mathurā kāsī. River-banks, sacred shrines, idols, temples, and places of pilgrimage like Kaydarnaat'h, Mat'huraa and Benares,

ਕੋਟਿ ਤੇਤੀਸਾ ਦੇਵਤੇ ਸਣੁ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੈ ਜਾਸੀ ॥ कोटि तेतीसा देवते सणु इंद्रै जासी ॥ Kot ṯeṯīsā ḏevṯe saṇ inḏrai jāsī. the three hundred thirty million gods, along with Indra, shall all pass away.

ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਬੇਦ ਚਾਰਿ ਖਟੁ ਦਰਸ ਸਮਾਸੀ ॥ सिम्रिति सासत्र बेद चारि खटु दरस समासी ॥ Simriṯ sāsṯar beḏ cẖār kẖat ḏaras samāsī. The Simritees, Shaastras, the four Vedas and the six systems of philosophy shall vanish.

ਪੋਥੀ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਗੀਤ ਕਵਿਤ ਕਵਤੇ ਭੀ ਜਾਸੀ ॥ पोथी पंडित गीत कवित कवते भी जासी ॥ Pothī pandiṯ gīṯ kaviṯ kavṯe bẖī jāsī. Prayer books, Pandits, religious scholars, songs, poems and poets shall also depart.

ਜਤੀ ਸਤੀ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀਆ ਸਭਿ ਕਾਲੈ ਵਾਸੀ ॥ जती सती संनिआसीआ सभि कालै वासी ॥ Jaṯī saṯī sanni▫āsī▫ā sabẖ kālai vāsī. Those who are celibate, truthful and charitable, and the Sannyaasee hermits are all subject to death.

ਮੁਨਿ ਜੋਗੀ ਦਿਗੰਬਰਾ ਜਮੈ ਸਣੁ ਜਾਸੀ ॥ मुनि जोगी दिग्मबरा जमै सणु जासी ॥ Mun jogī ḏigambrā jamai saṇ jāsī. The silent sages, the Yogis and the nudists, along with the Messengers of Death, shall pass away.

ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਵਿਣਸਣਾ ਸਭ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਬਿਨਾਸੀ ॥ जो दीसै सो विणसणा सभ बिनसि बिनासी ॥ Jo ḏīsai so viṇsaṇā sabẖ binas bināsī. Whatever is seen shall perish; all will dissolve and disappear.

ਥਿਰੁ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਥਿਰੁ ਹੋਸੀ ॥੧੮॥ थिरु पारब्रहमु परमेसरो सेवकु थिरु होसी ॥१८॥ Thir pārbarahm parmesaro sevak thir hosī. ||18|| Only the Supreme Lord God, the Transcendent Lord, is permanent. His servant becomes permanent as well. ||18|

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ आसा महला ५ ॥ Āsā mėhlā 5. Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:

ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਉਦਕ ਇਸਨਾਨੀ ॥ आठ पहर उदक इसनानी ॥ Āṯẖ pahar uḏak isnānī. Twenty-four hours a day, he takes his cleansing bath in water;

ਸਦ ਹੀ ਭੋਗੁ ਲਗਾਇ ਸੁਗਿਆਨੀ ॥ सद ही भोगु लगाइ सुगिआनी ॥ Saḏ hī bẖog lagā▫e sugi▫ānī. he makes continual offerings to the Lord; he is a true man of wisdom.

ਬਿਰਥਾ ਕਾਹੂ ਛੋਡੈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ बिरथा काहू छोडै नाही ॥ Birthā kāhū cẖẖodai nāhī. He never leaves anything uselessly.

ਬਹੁਰਿ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਲਾਗਹ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥ बहुरि बहुरि तिसु लागह पाई ॥१॥ Bahur bahur ṯis lāgah pā▫ī. ||1|| Again and again, he falls at the Lord's Feet. ||1||

ਸਾਲਗਿਰਾਮੁ ਹਮਾਰੈ ਸੇਵਾ ॥ सालगिरामु हमारै सेवा ॥ Sālgirām hamārai sevā. Such is the Saalagraam, the stone idol, which I serve;

ਪੂਜਾ ਅਰਚਾ ਬੰਦਨ ਦੇਵਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ पूजा अरचा बंदन देवा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Pūjā arcẖā banḏan ḏevā. ||1|| rahā▫o. such is my worship, flower-offerings and divine adoration as well. ||1||Pause||

ਘੰਟਾ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਸੁਨੀਐ ਚਹੁ ਕੁੰਟ ॥ घंटा जा का सुनीऐ चहु कुंट ॥ Gẖantā jā kā sunī▫ai cẖahu kunt. His bell resounds to the four corners of the world.

ਆਸਨੁ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਸਦਾ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ ॥ आसनु जा का सदा बैकुंठ ॥ Āsan jā kā saḏā baikunṯẖ. His seat is forever in heaven.

ਜਾ ਕਾ ਚਵਰੁ ਸਭ ਊਪਰਿ ਝੂਲੈ ॥ जा का चवरु सभ ऊपरि झूलै ॥ Jā kā cẖavar sabẖ ūpar jẖūlai. His chauri, his fly-brush, waves over all.

ਤਾ ਕਾ ਧੂਪੁ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਫੁਲੈ ॥੨॥ ता का धूपु सदा परफुलै ॥२॥ Ŧā kā ḏẖūp saḏā parfulai. ||2|| His incense is ever-fragrant. ||2||

ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਸੰਪਟੁ ਹੈ ਰੇ ਜਾ ਕਾ ॥ घटि घटि स्मपटु है रे जा का ॥ Gẖat gẖat sampat hai re jā kā. He is treasured in each and every heart.

ਅਭਗ ਸਭਾ ਸੰਗਿ ਹੈ ਸਾਧਾ ॥ अभग सभा संगि है साधा ॥ Abẖag sabẖā sang hai sāḏẖā. The Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, is His Eternal Court.

ਆਰਤੀ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਅਨੰਦ ॥ आरती कीरतनु सदा अनंद ॥ Ārṯī kīrṯan saḏā anand. His Aartee, his lamp-lit worship service, is the Kirtan of His Praises, which brings lasting bliss.

ਮਹਿਮਾ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਸਦਾ ਬੇਅੰਤ ॥੩॥ महिमा सुंदर सदा बेअंत ॥३॥ Mahimā sunḏar saḏā be▫anṯ. ||3|| His Greatness is so beautiful, and ever limitless. ||3||

ਜਿਸਹਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਲਹਨਾ ॥ जिसहि परापति तिस ही लहना ॥ Jisahi parāpaṯ ṯis hī lahnā. He alone obtains it, who is so pre-ordained;

ਸੰਤ ਚਰਨ ਓਹੁ ਆਇਓ ਸਰਨਾ ॥ संत चरन ओहु आइओ सरना ॥ Sanṯ cẖaran oh ā▫i▫o sarnā. he takes to the Sanctuary of the Saints' Feet.

ਹਾਥਿ ਚੜਿਓ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਲਗਿਰਾਮੁ ॥ हाथि चड़िओ हरि सालगिरामु ॥ Hāth cẖaṛi▫o har sālgirām. I hold in my hands the Saalagraam of the Lord.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਿ ਕੀਨੋ ਦਾਨੁ ॥੪॥੩੯॥੯੦॥ कहु नानक गुरि कीनो दानु ॥४॥३९॥९०॥ Kaho Nānak gur kīno ḏān. ||4||39||90|| Says Nanak, the Guru has given me this Gift. ||4||39||90|

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਤਨੁ ਸੁਆਹ ॥ अंतरि अगनि बाहरि तनु सुआह ॥ Anṯar agan bāhar ṯan su▫āh. The fire of desire rages within; outwardly they apply ashes to their bodies.

ਗਲਿ ਪਾਥਰ ਕੈਸੇ ਤਰੈ ਅਥਾਹ ॥ गलि पाथर कैसे तरै अथाह ॥ Gal pāthar kaise ṯarai athāh. There is a stone around their neck - how can they cross the unfathomable ocean?

ਜਾ ਕੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਸੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪਿ ॥ जा कै अंतरि बसै प्रभु आपि ॥ Jā kai anṯar basai parabẖ āp. Those, within whom God Himself abides -

ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਜਨ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਤਿ ॥੫॥ नानक ते जन सहजि समाति ॥५॥ Nānak ṯe jan sahj samāṯ. ||5|| O Nanak, those humble beings are intuitively absorbed in the Lord. ||5||
