Gurdwara Jandsar Sahib

Gurdwara Jandsar Sahib is half a kilometre to the northwest of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib which is one of five takhats important to the Sikhss. This shrine marks the place referred to as "Jandiana" in the old chronicles. Here Guru Gobind Singh used to disburse largesse (gifts) to his warriors. The Gurdwara now comprises a domed sanctum, with a small sarovar adjacent to it.

History

This Gurdwara called Jandsar sahib is so called as the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh at this location used the funds from the secret ("Gupt") treasure to play wages to the soldiers who were fighting the war against the Mughals and hill Rajas. At this place, the Guru tied his horse to the Jand tree and together with the adjacent pool of water (in punjabi called "sarovar), the place became known as "Jandsar sahib". (Jand - name of tree species and Sar referring to the sarovar or water) This name was therefore chosen by his followers for this beautiful holy shrine.
