His schooling was interrupted owing to his father's death. But the desire to learn was so strong in him that at the age of 26, he joined the Khalsa PracharakVidyala, Tarn Taran, and spent four years there studying Sikh history and philosophy, besides practising kirlan. In 1915 he joined the Khalsa school at Jhabal in Amritsar district as a Punjabi teacher, ishar Singh returned to his native place to become the custodian of the village gurudwara.
