Sardar Capt. Fateh Singh was born at Perowshah, District Gujrat, Pakistan. His father's name was Sardar Chattar Singh and his mother was Mai Bholi Kaur. Grandfather was Sardar Sona Singh. He belongs to Ghotra(Ajrawat), the labana family.

Family

His basic education was from his village school where he earned his lower middle school credits. (Sant prem Singh ji was also a student of that school as there was no school in his home village of Khori Duna Singh). His father Subedar Chatar Singh fought in World War I and got three generation jangi inaam and OBI. His elder Brother Nand Singh got IDSM and 1 Murabba land. Basic education from Tanda and joined punjab regiment in 1918 Fought in second world war and was mentioned in despaches gaining a medal for gallant distinguished service. Working for Labana bhawan at Chandigarh.

Millitary Life

On 29 july 1940, he joined in 10/8th punjab regiment Lahore. There were six groups of punjab regiments before partition 25% of the men were Sikhs. Fateh Singh was posted after taking oath with 33 more labana sikhs in 2/8 punjab regiment. There was a place named chitral near tibet and labana sikhs were taken to that regiment due to shortage of jatt sikhs during WW II. Chitral was also called Kala Pani (Black water). Capt saab met prisoners there. He was posted to signal pl hq company and sher singh and joga singh gotpokar was also with him. He had passed romanized urdu and 1st class english. Then capt saab joined VCO at jhansi training school.

Spiritual Awakening

Since 1935 he has recited gurbani. One day in a dream he saw Guru Nanak Dev jee with his dead father at 3:00 am. as capt saab was worried lot about house hold affairs and guru sahib give him confidence that not to worried he is going to take part in VCO within short times and truly after 4 months he got admission in VCO. Then their C.O saw him he said that he is too young to hold the job, he started watching his files where he saw the name of Subedaar Chatar singh (His Dad), He commented that he was from a traditional Army family and he would fulfill all requirements and needs.

After VCO promotion, he was posted to IAOC at jabalpur. in 1943, IAOC and EME seprated fropm each other. Then he was posted to 85 Mobile workshop at poona. After 6 months his unit moved to patna sahib, haridwar, tarveni, calcuta and reached imphal. Now at that time Second World war was at full swing. The Japanese had conquered eastern burma and occupied kohima and had surrounded the 33 corps of british army in june 1944. Japanese army had made pacca bunkers to make pucca defense.

His unit 85 mobile workshop(IEME) was at palel, later moved from tumboo road to burma and placed at different fort of asia in mandalay which was headquaters of Burma in winter season. The second world war ended in 1945.

He was awarded MENTION IN DISPATCHES in war for gallant and distuinguished service at kohima. One NCO, one Sepoy and he along with 2 specially sent on a recon patrol by BDE/hq. There they faced japnese patrol during conflict they won by killing japnese.

Social Activities

  • During Second World War, A Gurudwara was built at Mandalay (Burma). He demanded help from a british official that they have to bring cnstruction work things and that official agreed and send the army trucks for the purpose.
  • Gurudwara Infantry College (Mhow) secretary.
  • Gurudwara Toka Sahib president from 1988 to 2003. During his tenure, the Langar Hall, Sarovar, Gobar plant, road, etc. were built.
  • Royal british grant extend for ex - serviceman who fought 1939 - 45 retired before 15 aug 1947 including widows.
  • Regional president of Baba Makhan Shah Foundation, Chandigarh from 1997, work as distribution of scholarship, making members of labana sewak, contributions and bima policies.
  • Many people comment that he is a kind hearted man and helps the needy.
