It is derived from  [[Sanskrit]] where it stands for "descent" (viz., from heaven to earth), from the verbal root tṝ "to cross over") usually implies a deliberate descent from higher spiritual realms to lower realms of existence for special purposes, often translated into English as incarnation.

Avatar or avatĝra (Devanagari अवतार, Sanskrit for "descent" [viz., from heaven to earth]) refers to a deliberate descent of a deity from heaven to earth, or a descent of the Supreme Being (i.e., Vishnu for Vaishnavites) and from Sukhsagar to Bhavsagar(For Sikhs) and is mostly translated into English as "incarnation", but more accurately as "appearance" or "manifestation".
