ਅਥ ਅਰਿਹੰਤ ਦੇਵ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਕਥਨੰ ॥

Now begins the description of the incarnation named Arhant Dev :

ਸ੝ਰੀ ਭਗਉਤੀ ਜੀ ਸਹਾਇ ॥

ਚੌਪਈ ॥

CHAUPAI

ਜਬ ਜਬ ਦਾਨਵ ਕਰਤ ਪਸਾਰਾ ॥ ਤਬ ਤਬ ਬਿਸਨ ਕਰਤ ਸੰਘਾਰਾ ॥

Whenever the demons extend their rule, then Vishnu comes to destroy them.

ਸਕਲ ਅਸ੝ਰ ਇਕਠੇ ਤਹਾਂ ਭਝ ॥ ਸ੝ਰ ਅਰਿ੝ ਗ੝ਰ ਮੰਦਰਿ ਚਲਿ ਗਝ ॥੧॥

Once all the demons gathered together; ( seeing them ) the gods and their preceptors went to their abodes.1.

ਸਭਹੂੰ ਮਿਲਿ ਅਸ ਕਰਿਯੋ ਬਿਚਾਰਾ ॥ ਦਈਤਨ ਕਰਤ ਘਾਤ ਅਸ੝ਰਾਰਾ ॥

All the demons gathered together and thought out (over this issue), that Vishnu always destroys the demons

ਤਾ ਤੇ ਝਸ ਕਰੌ ਕਿਛ੝ ਘਾਤਾ ॥ ਜਾ ਤੇ ਬਨੇ ਹਮਾਰੀ ਬਾਤਾ ॥੨॥

And now they should devise some plan, to settle the issue.2.

ਦਈਤ ਗ੝ਰੂ ਇਮ ਬਚਨ ਬਖਾਨਾ ॥ ਤ੝ਮ ਦਾਨਵੋ ਨ ਭੇਦ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥

The preceptor of the demons (Shukracharya) said, "O demons, you have not understood this mystery till now;

ਵੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਜੱਗ ਕਰਤ ਬਹ੝ ਭਾਂਤਾ ॥ ਕ੝ਸਲ ਹੋਤ੝ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤਾ ॥੩॥

The gods gather together and perform Yajnas (sacrifices), therefore thay always remain happy.3.

ਤ੝ਮਹੂੰ ਕਰੋ ਜੱਗ ਆਰੰਭਨ ॥ ਬਿਜੈ ਹੋਇ ਤ੝ਮਰੀ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਰਣ ॥

You should also perform sacrifices, and then you will be victorious in the battlefield.

ਜੱਗ ਅਰੰਭਯ ਦਾਨਵਨ ਕਰਾ ॥ ਬਚਨ ਸ੝ਨਤ ਸ੝ਰ ਪ੝ਰਿ ਥਰਹਰਾ ॥੪॥

You should then began the performance of a Yajna, and hearing about it , the people of the region of gods became fearful.4.

ਬਿਸਨ ਬੋਲ ਕਰਿ ਕਰੋ ਬਿਚਾਰਾ ॥ ਅਬ ਕਛ੝ ਕਰੋ ਮੰਤ੝ਰ ਅਸ੝ਰਾਰਾ ॥

All the gods went to meet Vishnu and said, " O destroyer of demons; take some steps now.

ਬਿਸਨ ਨਵੀਨ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਬਪ੝ ਧਰਿਯੋ ॥ ਜਗਿ ਬਿਘਨ ਅਸ੝ਰਨ ਕੋ ਕਰਿਹੋ ॥੫॥

Vishnu said, "I shall manifest myself in a new body, and destroy the Yajna of the demons."5.

ਬਿਸਨ ਅਧਿਕ ਕੀਨੋ ਇਸਨਾਨਾ ॥ ਦੀਨੇ ਅਮਿਤ ਦਿਜਨ ਕਹ੝ ਦਾਨਾ ॥

Vishnu then took bath at various pilgrim-stations, and distributed unlimited alms to the Brahmins.

ਮਨ ਮੋ ਕਵਲਾ ਸਿਰਜੋ ਗਯਾਨਾ ॥ ਕਾਲ ਪ੝ਰਖ ਕੋ ਧਰਯੋ ਧਯਾਨਾ ॥੬॥

Brahma, born out of the heart-lotus of Vishnu, propagated the divine knowledge, and Vishnu mediated on the Immanent Lord.6.

ਕਾਲ ਪ੝ਰਖ ਤਬ ਭਝ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥ ਦਾਸ ਦਾਨ ਕਹ ਬਚਨ ਰਿਸਾਲਾ ॥

The Immanent Lord, then became Merciful and addressed his servant Vishnu with sweet words,

ਧਰ ਅਰਹੰਤ ਦੇਵ ਕੋ ਰੂਪਾ ॥ ਨਾਸ ਕਰੋ ਅਸ੝ਰਨ ਕੇ ਭੂਪਾ ॥੭॥

O Vishnu, manifest yourself in the forms of Arhant, and destroy the kings of the demons."7.

ਬਿਸਨ ਦੇਵ ਆਗਿਯਾ ਜਬ ਪਾਈ ॥ ਕਾਲ ਪ੝ਰਖ ਕੀ ਕਰੀ ਬਡਾਈ ॥

Vishnu, after receiving the orders of the Immanent Lord, eulogized him.

ਭੂਅ ਅਰਹੰਤ ਦੇਵ ਬਨਿ ਆਯੋ ॥ ਆਨਿ ਅਉਰ ਹੀ ਪੰਥ ਚਲਾਯੋ ॥੮॥

He manifested himself as Arhant Dev on the earth and started a new religion.8.

ਜਬ ਅਸ੝ਰਨ ਕੋ ਭਯੋ ਗ੝ਰ੝ ਆਈ ॥ ਬਹ੝ਤਿ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਨਿਜ ਮਤਹਿ ਚਲਾਈ ॥

When he became the preceptor of the demons, he started different kinds of sects.

ਸ੝ਰਾਵਗ ਮਤ ਉਪਰਾਜਨ ਕੀਆ ॥ ਸੰਤ ਸਬੂਹਨ ਕੋ ਸ੝ਖ ਦੀਆ ॥੯॥

One of the sects he started was Shravak sect (Jainism) and bestowed supreme comfort to the saints.9.

ਸਭਹੂੰ ਹਾਥ ਮੋਚਨਾ ਦੀਝ ॥ ਸਿਖਾ ਹੀਣ ਦਾਨਵ ਬਹ੝ ਕੀਝ ॥

He caused all to hold the forceps for plucking hair and in this way he made many demons devoid of the lock of hair on the crown of the head.

ਸਿਖਾ ਹੀਣ ਕੋਈ ਮੰਤ੝ਰ ਨ ਫ੝ਰੈ ॥ ਜੋ ਕੋਈ ਜਪੈ ਉਲਟ ਤਿਹ ਪਰੈ ॥੧੦॥

Those without hair or without the lock of hair on the crown of their heads could not remember any mantra and if anyone repeated the mantra, there was negative influence of the mantra on him.10.

ਬਹ੝ਰ ਜੱਗ ਤੋ ਕਰਬ ਮਿਟਾਯੋ ॥ ਜੀਅ ਹਿੰਸਾ ਤੇ ਸਭਹੂੰ ਹਟਾਯੋ ॥

Then he ended the performance of Yajnas and made all indifferent to the idea of violence on beings.

ਬਿਨ ਹਿੰਸਾ ਕੀਅ ਜੱਗ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਜੱਗ ਕਰੈ ਨਾ ਕੋਈ ॥੧੧॥

There can be no Yajna without the violence on beings, therefore no one performed Yajna now.11.

ਯਾ ਤੇ ਭਯੋ ਜਗਨ ਕੋ ਨਾਸਾ ॥ ਜੋ ਜੀਯ ਹਨੇ ਹੋਇ ਉਪਹਾਸਾ ॥

In this way, the practice of performing Yajnas was destroyed and anyone who used to kill beings, he was ridiculed.

ਜੀਅ ਮਰੇ ਬਿਨ੝ ਜੱਗ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥ ਜੱਗ ਕਰੈ ਪਾਵੈ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਈ ॥੧੨॥

There could be no Yajna without the killing of beings and if one performed a Yajna, he availed no merit.12.

ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਦੀਯੋ ਸਭਨ ਉਪਦੇਸਾ ॥ ਜੱਗ ਸਕੈ ਕੋ ਕਰ ਨ ਨਰੇਸਾ ॥

The Arhant incarnation, instructed all in way, that no king could perform a Yajna.

ਅਪੰਥ ਪੰਥ ਸਭ ਲੋਗਨ ਲਾਯਾ ॥ ਧਰਮ ਕਰਮ ਕੋਊ ਕਰਨ ਨ ਪਾਯਾ ॥੧੩॥

Everyone was put on a wrong path and no one was performing the action of Dharma.13.



ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

DOHRA

ਅੰਨਿ ਅੰਨਿ ਤੇ ਹੋਤ੝ ਜਯੋ ਘਾਸਿ ਘਾਸਿ ਤੇ ਹੋਇ ॥

Just as corn is produced from corn, grass from grass;

ਤੈਸੇ ਮਨ੝ਛ ਮਨ੝ਛ ਤੇ ਅਵਰ੝ ਨ ਕਰਤਾ ਕੋਇ ॥੧੪॥

In the same way the man from man (thus there is no creator-Ishvara).14.



ਚੌਪਈ ॥

CHAUPAI

ਝਸ ਗਿਆਨ ਸਭਹੂਨ ਦ੝ਰਿੜਾਯੋ ॥ ਧਰਮ ਕਰਮ ਕੋਊ ਕਰਨ ਨ ਪਾਯੋ ॥

Such a knowledge was given to all that none performed the action of Dharma.

ਇਹ ਬ੝ਰਿਤ ਬੀਚ ਸਭੋ ਚਿਤ ਦੀਨਾ ॥ ਅਸ੝ਰ ਬੰਸ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਭਯੋ ਛੀਨਾ ॥੧੫॥

Everyone`s mind was absorbed in such things and in this way, the clan of demons became weak.15.



ਚੌਪਈ ॥

CHAUPAI

ਨਾਵਨ ਦੈਤ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਕੋਈ ॥ ਬਿਨ੝ ਇਸਨਾਨ ਪਵਿਤ੝ਰ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥

Such rules were propagated, that no demon could take a bath now, and without taking bath no one could become pure.

ਬਿਨ੝ ਪਵਿਤ੝ਰ ਕੋਈ ਫ੝ਰੇ ਨ ਮੰਤ੝ਰਾ ॥ ਨਿਫਲ ਭਝ ਤਾ ਤੈ ਸਭ ਜੰਤ੝ਰਾ ॥੧੬॥

Without becoming pure, no mantra could be recited and this way, all the actions became fruitless.16.

ਦਸ ਸਹੰਸ੝ਰ ਬਰਖ ਕੀਅ ਰਾਜਾ ॥ ਸਭ ਜਗ ਮੋ ਮਤ ਝਸ੝ ਪਰਾਜਾ ॥

In this way, Arhant ruled for ten thousand years and propagated his religion throughout the world.

ਧਰਮ ਕਰਮ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਮਿਟਿ ਗਯੋ ॥ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਛੀਨ ਅਸ੝ਰ ਕ੝ਲ ਭਯੋ ॥੧੭॥

The actions of Dharma ended in the word and in this way, the clan of demons became weak.17.

ਦੇਵ ਰਾਇ ਜੀਅ ਮੋ ਭਲ ਮਾਨਾ ॥ ਬਡਾ ਕਰਮ੝ ਅਬ ਬਿਸਨ ਕਰਾਨਾ ॥

Indra, the king of gods, liked all this very much in his mind that Vishnu had done such a great thing for them.

ਆਨੰਦ ਬਢਾ ਸੋਕ੝ ਮਿਟ ਗਯੋ ॥ ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਸਭਹੂੰ ਬਧਾਵਾ ਭਯੋ ॥੧੮॥

All of them forsaking grief, were filled with joy and the songs of happiness were sung in every home.18.



ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

DOHRA

ਬਿਸਨ ਝਸ ਉਪਦੇਸ ਦੈ ਸਭ ਹੂੰ ਧਰਮ ਛ੝ਡਾਇ ॥ ਅਮਰਾਵਤਿ ਸ੝ਰ ਨਗਰ ਮੋ ਬਹ੝ਰਿ ਬਿਰਾਜਯੋ ਜਾਇ ॥੧੯॥

Instructing in this way, Vishnu caused all to abandon the acions of Dharma and went back again to heavens.19.

ਸ੝ਰਾਵਗੇਸ ਕੋ ਰੂਪ ਧਰਿ ਦੈਤ ਕ੝ਪੰਥ ਸਭ ਡਾਰ ॥

Assuming the status of supreme preceptor of Sharvakas and engrossing the demons on the wrong path,

ਪੰਦ੝ਰਸਵੋਂ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਇਮ ਧਾਰਤ ਭਯੋ ਮ੝ਰਾਰ ॥੨੦॥

Vishnu manifested himself ad the fifteenth incarnation in this way.20.
