Contrary to previous reports - as confirmed in an official letter from the Vatican’s Office of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue there is no evidence to support claims that Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji travelled to Rome and met with the then Pope around the time of 1518-1520.

In the letter, dated June 8, 2018, His Eminence, Jean-Louis Cardinal Tauran explains that a similar inquiry was launched in 2016 on request from Justice Anup Kumar Choudry, a former judge of the Supreme Court of Uganda. The letter states “After having thoroughly checked the historical records in their own respective Offices, the Vatican Secret Archives, Vatican Museums and the Office of the Archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica, the competent Office in these matters clearly ruled out the existence of any records to substantiate this claim. This was duly communicated to the aforesaid Apostolic Nuncio and through him, to Justice Choudry in a letter dated 3 October 2016.”
