A man was stabbed to death while trying to stop two muggers who had stolen a woman's bag.Sukhwinder Singh pursued two men who robbed a 28-year-old woman near Barking station in east London. When he caught up with the pair a fight broke out and the 31-year-old was knifed. Mr Singh chased the robbers along Victoria Road into Uphall Road before he was attacked just before 7pm on Friday. He was taken to the Royal London hospital but later died. A post-mortem is due to take place.

Detective Inspector John Sandlin, of the Metropolitan Police, said: "This is a tragic death of a man who was killed for attempting to stop others committing crime, and our thoughts are with Sukhwinder's family.

"However, I would also to reassure the wider community that tragic events such as these are very rare.

"I am appealing for anyone that knows who committed this crime, or who has any information about those who committed this crime, to do the right thing and come forward and contact police.

"My officers are also keen to hear from anybody who witnessed the initial robbery, the actual altercation that led to the stabbing and additionally anyone who may have seen any persons matching the suspect's description fleeing the Uphall Road area.

"It is also possible that the suspects may have abandoned the bag stolen and I appeal to anyone who may find a brown leather shoulder bag, to contact police.

"It may be that it has significant clues that could help solve this awful crime."

The two robbers were both black men in their 20s or 30s and 5ft 7in to 6ft.

Tributes paid to have-a-go hero

Tributes have been paid to a "brave" builder who was stabbed to death after chasing bag-snatchers in east London. Sukhwinder Singh, 31, was attacked on Friday as he pursued two men who had mugged a 28-year-old woman in Barking. Mr Singh died at the Royal London Hospital. A post mortem test showed he died from a stab wound to the heart.

Barking councillor Nirmal Singh Gill said: "He would help anybody so it doesn't surprise me he was trying to help a lady."

He continued: "He didn't deserve this - but he was a special young man.

"It's a very big loss to everyone both here and in India."

Police said father-of-one Mr Singh was an Indian national who had lived in the UK for about 10 years.They added that he had cousins in Barking but his family lived in India. A committed Sikh, Mr Singh used to go to Singh Sabha London East Gurdwara in North Street, Barking, every evening after work.

He was known locally by his nickname "Bittu".

'A brave thing'

Mohammad Jubran, 22, who lives in Victoria Road, where Mr Singh was stabbed, said: "It's terrible. I've been living here for 16 years and it's the first time I have heard someone has been murdered.

"It was a brave thing he did."

The two suspects were described as black, aged in their 20s to 30s, and both were about 5ft 7in to 6ft.Detective Inspector John Sandlin said Mr Singh was not connected to the woman whose bag was snatched.

He said: "This was a very tragic incident but thankfully they are extremely rare.

"I would not encourage people to get involved, I'd encourage people to call 999 so the police can respond.

"What Mr Singh did do was very brave."

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said people should not be deterred from intervening if they witnessed a crime as long as they put their own safety first.

Victim pays tribute to have-a-go hero

The victim of a brutal mugging yesterday paid tribute to the have-a-go hero who died trying to save her. Karamjit Kaur, aged 28, described brave dad-of-one Sukhwinder Singh, 31, as her "guardian angel".

Tearful Karamjit said: "He came out of the darkness to help me. His wife has lost a husband and his child their father. I can't stop crying."

Karamjit was attacked near Barking station, East London, on Friday night. Sukhwinder chased the two thieves, but they stabbed him in the heart. He died later in hospital.
