April 1

1621: PRAKASH UTSAV, Patshahi Ninth, Guru Tegh Bahadhur Ji. This is the actual date of Guru Sahib's Prakash.

April 2

1757: Taemur and Jahan Khan attacked Sri Harmandir Sahib, destroyed Sri Darbar Sahib and completely filled the sarowar with sand .

1850: Sikh forces of Ranjit Singh disbanded a year after the East Indian Company gained control of the Punjab.

1984: Harbans Lal Khana was murdered.

1999: A three-day international seminar on the "Relevance of the Khalsa value system in the 21st century" today marked the formal commencement of the tercentenary celebrations of the birth of the Khalsa being organised by the Anandpur Sahib Foundation.

April 3

1775: The foundation stone of Harmandir Sahib was laid for the 2nd time by Jassa Singh Ahluwalia.

1947: Patel announced the formation of Sikhstan after independence.

1984: Sikhs were attacked by Central Reserve Police during Harbans Lal Khan's funeral procession and left 8 Sikhs dead.

April 4

1914: Nanak Jahaz (Kama Gata Maru) sailed from Hon Kong to Canada under the leadership of Bhagat Baba Gurdit Singh Sarhali.

1946: Master Tara Singh and Mohammad Ali Jinnah discussed the Sikh-Muslim union.

1949: The Conference of Sikh Intellectuals condemned the arrest of Master Tara Singh.

1983: 26 more Sikhs were killed by Indian police at Malerkotla, where Sikhs were peacefully sitting on the trafficless road and reciting Shabads. This was part of the Rasta Roke Agitation.

April 5

1846: A treaty was signed between the British Govt. and Maharaja Dalip Singh.

1849: The Punjab was annexed by the British.

1982: Negotiations on Sikh demands broke down.

1999: The first Sikh jatha by road for Pakistan after the 1965 Indo-Pak war, part of the tercentenary celebrations of Khalsa Panth crossed the Wagah border into Pakistan today. The land route was closed by Pakistan after the Indo-Pak war and subsequent jathas visited the country via the 'Samjhauta Express' train.

1849: Maharani Jinda was moved to maximum security facilities at the Chunar Fort.

April 7

1924: The 3rd Akali Jatha of 500 GurSikhs, led by S. Santa Singh, courted arrest upon reaching Jaito.

1948: Akali Dal passed a resolution to keep its independent entity.

April 8

1929: Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt threw bombs in the Ligislative Assembly, Delhi.

1982: Akali Agitation was initiated for the Waters Issue: Satluj-Yamuna link.

April 9

1745: Orders to shoot Sikhs on sight lead to the "Small Holocaust", that saw 10,000 Sikhs massacred in a single day. These orders were issued by Diwan Lakhpat Rai, to avenge the death of his Brother, Jaspat Rai.

1796: Khalsa Dal restored the belongings of Udase Sadhus that were snatched by the Vairaghis during Kumbh Maela.

April 10

1754: Jassa Singh Ahluwalia was given Jathaedari of the Sikh Nation and bestowed the title of "Nawab".

1763: Guru Khalsa Panth resolved to liberate a Kasur Brahmin's wife who was abducted by the Nawab of Kasur, Punjab.

April 11

1762: Ahmed Shah Abdali blew up Sri Harmandir Sahib and desecrated the sarowar by filling it with garbage.

1999: Undeterred by the warning of the new pro-Badal SGPC management, Sikh organisations and institutions backing suspended Jathedar of Akal Takht, Bhai Ranjit Singh, held an impressive parallel tercentenary Khalsa march from Akal Takht, which will reach Anandpur Sahib on Tuesday

April 12

1801: Sher-I-Punjab Maharaja Ranjit Singh assumed the Maharaja title.

1876: Maharaja Mohinder Singh of Patiala passed away.

1888: Khalsa Diwan at Lahore was established by Professor Gurmukh Singh and Giani Dit Singh, to propogate Sikh Tenets.

April 13

1559: Guru Amar Das Patshah established the Vaisakhi Maela traditions.

1699: KHALSA DAE SAJNA DIWAS. On this day the Khalsa order was established.

1746: Panth Khalsa resolved not to be part of the Afghan kingdom.

1814: Janam Din for Nirankari Chief, Baba Darbara Singh.

1861: Baba ram singh started the Namdhari movement.

1907: Panch Khalsa Diwan was established at Basodh.

1919: The Jallianwala massacre took place. 379 unarmed Sikhs were killed and 2,000 were wounded.

1967: Punjabi became the official langurage of the Punjab at the secretariat level.

1974: Sant Mihan Singh and his followers distributed Amrit to Wester-born Sikhs at Guru Ram Das Ashram. Bhai Sahib Dayal Singh served as one of the Panj Piare and became the first American Sikh to administer Amrit.

1975: For the first time in history, the Amrit Parchar was given by a Panj Piare comprised totally of western-born Khalsa.

1978: Amritsar Massacre.

April 14

1634: The Battle of Amritsar between Mughals and Sikhs was fought. The Sikhs were led by Guru Hargobind Ji.

1892: Khalsa College Council was established at Amritsar.

1930: Civil disobedience movement was initiated in the Punjab.

1949: Sardar Kapur Singh I.C.S. was suspended by the government of Gopi Chand Bhargav.

1984: Surinder Singh Sodhi, the right-hand man of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwala was killed.

1999: Sikhs, the world over, marked the Tricentenuary celebration of the Birth of the Khalsa.

1999: The suspended Jathedar of Akal Takht, Bhai Ranjit Singh, declared to free Akal Takht from Akali religio-politico institutions and the state.

1999: To mark the tercentenary of the birth of the Khalsa, the Anandpur Sahib Foundation headed by Shiromani Akali Dal president and Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal awarded the Order of Nishan-e-Khalsa to 80 most prominent Sikhs of the century.

April 15

1501: Guru Nanak started preaching the new religion, Sikh Dharma.

1563: Guru Arjan was born in Goindwal, a small town in Amritsar district, on April 15, 1563. He was the youngest son of Guru Ram Das and Bibi Bhani. As a child, one day he found his way to the bed of Guru Amar Das who was then resting. His mother ran to fetch the child before he could disturb the Guru, but he had already awakened the Guru, who revealed, "Let him come to me; 'yeh mera dohita bani ka bohita howega'- this grandson of mine shall be a ship to take mankind across the ocean of the world." Guru Arjan was married to Ganga, daughter of Krishen Chand, a resident of Meo village near Phillor in Jullundhur district. The marriage took place in 1589 when he was about 26 years old. Guru Ram Das began excavation of two tanks named Santokhsar and Amritsar and started the foundation of the city of Ramdaspur. After his father, Guru Arjan applied himself to the task of completing the tanks and extending the city. It was his practice to go every day and superintend the work.

1634: Bhai Ballu Ji accepted Shahadat while fighting the Turks.

1980: The Sikh Bank was nationalized by Indira Gandhi.

April 16

1764: Sikhs captured Lahore and issued their own coins.

1781: Sikhs attacked Shahdara Patpat, Delhi.

1789: Delhi was invaded by Khalsa Forces.

1961: Bahi Sahib Randhir Singh Ji passed away.

April 17

1766: PaharGanj, Delhi was conquered by Khalsa Forces.

April 18

1908: 1st Sikh Educational Conference by Chief Khalsa Diwan was held.

1924: 4th Akali Shaheedi Jatha of 500 GurSikhs, led by Jathaedar Puran Singh Bohowas, courted arrest on reaching Jaito.

1984: Sikhs shops were looted in Chandigarh.

April 19

1661: Guru Tegh Bahadhur Ji visited Prayag.

1850: Bhai Maharaj Singh, Maharaja Kharak Singh and Mool Raj, hero of the 2nd Anglo-Sikh War and governor of Multan, arrived at Calcutta.

1854: Maharaja Dalip Singh left for England.

April 20

1816: Khalsa Forces marched towards Kashmir.

April 21

1913: The Ghadar Prty was organized.

1981: Jathedar, Sri Akal Takhat ratified the resolution "Sikhs are a Nation."

1999: The newly-created Pakistan Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PGPC) took control of all Sikh shrines in Pakistan from the Pakistan Waqf Board.

April 22

1978: Sri Akhand Path Sahib's bhog in remembrance of those kill in Amritsar Massacre was held.

April 23

1624: The foundation of Kiratpur was laid by Guru Har Gobind Ji.

1924: 2 GurSikhs of the 3rd Akali Shaheedi Jatha of 500 GurSikhs for Jaito Morcha were tortured to death in the Nabha Jail.

1984: 8 Sikhs were killed by India's Central Reserve Police Force.

April 24

1955: Akali Dal decided to launch a peaceful agitation for the Punjabi Suba.

   1980: Gurbachan Singh, Chief of the fake Nirankaris, was murdered.

April 25

1635: The Battle of Kartarpur was fought between the Mughals and Sikhs led by Guru Hargobind Ji.

1809: The Amritsar Agreement was reached between Sikhs and the British Government.

1982: Hindus attacked the Sri Darbar Sahib.

April 26

1969: Lachhman Singh Gill died..

1982: Hindus perpetrated sacreligious acts on Sri Darbar Sahib.

1984: 15 GurSikhs were killed by Border Security Forces of India at Gurdwara Bibi Kahan Kaur, Moga.

April 27

1834: Khalsa Forces crossed the Attock River.

1915: A conspiracy case was registered against Ghadar Party members. They were charged with waging war against the crown and trying to overthrow British rule in India.

1925: Jaito Morcha ended in victory.

April 28

1635: Painda Khan was killed by Guru Hargobind in a personal duel.

1671: Janam Din Bhai Rupa, a devoted Sikh of Guru Har Gobind Sahib.

1835: Maharja Ranjit Singh reached Peshawar.

1999: Bhai Ranjit Singh is officially removed as Jathedar of them Akal Takht by the SGPC.

April 29

1635: The Battle of Phagwara was fought between Mughals and Sikhs led by Guru Har Gobind Ji.

1849: Maharani Jind Kaur escaped from the maximum security of Chunar Fort and reached Kanthmandu in Nepal

1999: Justice Kuldip Singh (retd), a former Judge of the Supreme Court, today resigned as President of the World Sikh Council in protest against the removal of Bhai Ranjit Singh as Jathedar of Akal Takht by the executive of the SGPC yesterday.

April 30

1689: The Bhangani Battle was fought between Guru Gobind Singh Ji and the Hill Rajas. This was Guru Sahib's first battle. Pir Budhu Shah's sons and 700 of his followers fought along side Guru's forces

1699: Khalsa was created by Guru Gobind Singh Ji at Anandpur Sahib. This is the actual date of Guru Khalsa's creation.

1837: The Battle of Jamrodh was fought and this is where Hari Singh Nalwa accepted Shahadat.

1877: A mysterious aroma circumambulated the Guru Granth Sahib in the Golden Temple.

1921: SGPC registered with bth British Government as a Sikh body in Lahore.
