Seekers of truth
Gurbani highlights the importance for the adherent of Sikhism to tread on the path of Truth and to follow the way described by the Gurus. A Sikh or a Gurmukh (a person who follows the advise of the Guru) is be definition a student of life, a being who is learning about life always and applying the lessons learnt to his or her real life. In this way the person becomes more elevating and more aware of his or her duties in life.
The Guru tells us that "The Gurmukhs do not like falsehood. They are imbued with Truth; they love only Truth." (SGGS p 22) This points to the importance of the Guru respecting person to always follow the path of truth and shirk away from falsehood and deception. The Guru, in completing this tuk ends by saying "Imbued with Truth, you shall meet the Guru. The true ones are absorbed into the True Lord. (3)" (SGGS p 22) So only by becoming saturated with the Truth can one ever hope to be reunited with God, the Supreme Reality.

O Mind remain detached
In the following shabad (hymn), Guru Amar Das, the third Sikh Guru in Sri Raag tells us, Maan ray - Maan refers to mind and ray is a calling to one's own mind - O Mind, garih hi mahi udas. Garih refers to family or material world, hi means indeed, mahi means in and udas means unattached (or detached). O mind, in this material world remain detached. This does not mean that you should not take on responsibilities but that while you carry out all the duties of a responsible member of a family do not become a "slave" of your emotions and get overwhelmingly and unhealthy absorbed in this material world.
Take all your responsibilities seriously and be dedicated to your worldly affairs and your family but do not become completely engrossed in them. Always remember the gift of life given by the Creator and sway with His Will; remember the Lord at all times for - you never know in which direction He may choose to change your life. Be prepared for everything and anything that the Lord wishes.
| ਮਨ ਰੇ ਗਰਿਹ ਹੀ ਮਾਹਿ ਉਦਾਸ ॥
ਸਚ ਸੰਜਮ ਕਰਣੀ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਗਰਮਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਪਰਗਾਸ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |

Man re garih hī mĝhi uḝĝs. Sacẖ sanjam karṇī so kare gurmukẖ ho▫e pargĝs. (1) rahĝ▫o. |
|
O mind, remain detached in the midst of your household. Practising truth, self-discipline and good deeds, the Gurmukh is enlightened. (1)(Pause) |
In the second line the Guru tells us that by treading on the path of Truth, self-discipline and by doing good deeds, the God fearing person is truly enlightened.
The Gurmukh practices Truth, and only Truth

First, the One created Himself; second, the sense of duality; third, the three-phased Maya. The fourth state, the highest, is obtained by the Gurmukh, who practices Truth, and only Truth. (4) |
