Naem or ਨੇਮ s  is a Punjabi word that means religious code, principle, rules or rehat. Alternative meaning which is not generally used in Gurbani is wall, fence or to enclose.

Examples of use of this word in Gurbani

Shabad 1

In this shabad by Guru Arjan Dev in Raag Gaurhee the word 'Naem' appears as the third word thus:

ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਨੇਮ ਬ੝ਰਤ ਪੂਜਾ ॥ ਪਾਰਬ੝ਰਹਮ ਬਿਨ੝ ਜਾਨ੝ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੨॥

karam dhharam naem brath poojaa. paarabreham bin jaan n dhoojaa (2)

The karma of good actions, the Dharma of righteous living, religious rituals, fasts and worship

- practice these, but do not know any other than the Supreme Lord God.(2) (SGGS p199)

In the first part of this tuk, the Guru asks us to practise ਕਰਮ or 'karma' meaning 'good actions and deeds'; ਧਰਮ or 'dharam' meaning righteous living; ਨੇਮ or 'naem' meaning religious rituals or practises; ਬ੝ਰਤ or 'barrt' meaning fasts or restrictions and ਪੂਜਾ or puja meaning worship and prayer.

In the second part of the tuk, the Guru instructs us thus: ਪਾਰਬ੝ਰਹਮ or 'parbrahm' refering to God; ਬਿਨ੝ or 'bin' meaning without; ਜਾਨ੝ or 'jaan' meaning realise or recognise; ਨ or 'n' meaning none and finally ਦੂਜਾ or 'dhooja' meaning another.

The Guru is telling us to practise doing good deeds, living a life of righteousness and religious practises; fasting or restraining oneself and engaging in worship and prayer. However at all times to remembers that in the end there is no other than God who is the Supreme Master. To acknowledge that all is possible due to the blessing of the True Lord and that no one else has the ultimate authority in life.

Shabad 2

In this second Shabad by Guru Arjan Dev this time in Raag Aasaa, the Guru explains how by adhering to the correct actions, deeds and routines, with the meditation on the Lord, Har, Har, we are able attain a state of purity.

varath naem majan this poojaa. baedh puraan thin sinmrith suneejaa.
mehaa puneeth jaa kaa niramal thhaan. saadhhasangath jaa kai har har naam (2)

Fasts, religious vows, cleansing baths, and worship to Him; listening to the Vedas, Puraanas, and Shaastras.

Extremely pure is he, and immaculate is his place, who meditates upon the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, in the Saadh Sangat. (2) (SGGS p393)
