Four forms of birth

The Sikh faith believes in the four forms of birth which are listed in their holy scripture call the Guru Granth Sahib. These four types of birth are: Andaj or ਅੰਡਜ s ; Jeraj or ਜੇਰਜ s ; Utbhuj or ਉਤਭ੝ਜ s  and Setaj or ਸੇਤਜ s 

  • Andaj or ਅੰਡਜ refers to the form of birth from egg; the word 'andah' means 'egg'; e.g. birds, fish, snakes


  • Jeraj or ਜੇਰਜ refers to the form of birth from the womb; or birth canal; viviparous - Giving birth to living offspring that develop within the mother's body eg Mammals, sharks, etc
  • Utbhuj or ਉਤਭ੝ਜ refers to the form of birth from the earth; soil or rocks; eg: plants, the vegetable kingdom, etc
  • Setaj (ਸੇਤਜ s ) refers to the form of birth which is from bodily secretion, involves heat or "sweat" - ਪਸੀਨੇ/ਮ੝ੜਕੇ ਤੋਂ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਝ ਜੀਵ (ਜੂਆਂ ਆਦਿਕ). microbes, bacteria, etc

Gurbani

ਅੰਡਜ ਜੇਰਜ ਉਤਭ੝ਜਾਂ ਖਾਣੀ ਸੇਤਜਾਂਹ ॥
Andaj jeraj uṯ▫bẖujĝʼn kẖĝṇī seṯjĝʼnh.
the four sources of creation - born of eggs, born of the womb, born of the earth and born of sweat;
