'Baba Sundar', celebrated for his six-stanza composition, the Ramkali Sadu, incorporated in Guru Granth Sahib, was the great grandson of Guru Amar Das. His father, Anand Das son of Baba Mohri, was a man of a devout temperament. Sundar grew up in an environment of faith and piety and developed deep affection and reverence for Guru Amar Dãs, his great-grandfather. The theme of his poem, Sadu meaning call, is the ascension of Guru Amar Das, described in terms of his having been recalled by God Almighty. The hymn states how Guru Amar Das had completely surrendered himself to the Will .of the Supreme Being, ever remaining absorbed in meditation on the Name, how he had, through the favour of Gurus, attained the office of Guth, how he, at the time of his departure, had appointed Ram Das his successor and how he had told his family to abide by the Will of the Lord and not to weep,for him after him.

Guru Hargobind, Son Tegh Bahadur& the family, with some sikhs visited goindwal after skirmish in amritsar then were left in Goindwal on the persuasion of Baba Sundarji.

His bani is in Raag Ramkali Sadu(Sadu - no rahau verse) contain 6 Padas.

Ramkali Sadu, by Sundar, is an "elegy" (sadd, in PUNJABI) included in the GURU GRANTH Sahib in Raga Ramkali, eighteenth of the thirtyone musical measures used in SIKH Scripture. Sadd is a form of folk poetry prevalent in rural Punjab. Literally the term means an invocation call, hark or cry. Originally, it was used to denote songs addressed by lover to beloved expressing his heart`s anguish. With the passage of time, it turned into a dirge sung in love and adoration of the dead. Sundar, a greatgrandson of Guru Amar Das, NANAK III, recaptures in this sixstanza verse the advice the Guru gave to his followers and members of his family just before he passed away. Guru Amar Das tells them not to weep and wail for him, nor to perform the customary mourning rites. Since death is an opportunity for the individual soul to get united with the Supreme Soul, it is not a moment for lament. The poem opens with an invocatory line wherein God is called the Beneficent Lord of this universe and one who cares for His devotees in all the three worlds. If one follows ihc Guru`s word, duality ends and one gives oneself to the contemplation of the Name of the Supreme Being alone. It was this gift of ndmsimran which Guru Amar Das received from his predecessors, Guru Nanak and Guru Arigad and which helped him achieve the Supreme status. When the call of death came, Guru Amar Das was absorbed in the meditation of His Name. The imperishable, immovable and immeasurable Lord could be realized only through ndmsimran (1). The second stanza summarizes the Guru`s injunctions to his followers to face the sombre moment of his death with calm serenity. One is adjured to rejoice in the Lord`s Will. It is only the Name that will help man in his journey to the next world, not the traditional funeral rituals meant to guide the soul hereafter. The next two stanzas, written in the first person, constitute the Guru`s last advice to his followers and relations. Since the "death summons from God cannot be returned uncomplied" (3), none should feel sad or weep at the time of his death: rather, the moment should be taken as an opportunity for the soul to become united with the Lord (4). In the concluding two stanzas, Sundar sums up the advice given by the Guru calling upon his SIKHS to chant the holy hymns instead of resorting to the customary rituals (5). The Sadu concludes with Guru Amar Das bidding his son Mohri and all the Sikhs to pay obeisance to Guru Ram Das whom he had anointed his successor "by placing himself into him"(6). The Sadu is commonly recited at the conclusion of a reading of the Guru Granth Sahib as part of the obsequies.

Raamkalee, Sadd ~ The Call Of Death:

ੴ ਸਤਿਗ੝ਰ ਪ੝ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ੴ सतिगढ़र पढ़रसादि ॥
Ikoaʼnkĝr saṯgur parsĝḝ.
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਜਗਿ ਦਾਤਾ ਸੋਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲ੝ ਤਿਹ੝ ਲੋਇ ਜੀਉ ॥
जगि दाता सोइ भगति वछलढ़ तिहढ़ लोइ जीउ ॥
Jag ḝĝṯĝ soė bẖagaṯ vacẖẖal ṯihu loė jīo.
He is the Great Giver of the Universe, the Lover of His devotees, throughout the three worlds.

ਗ੝ਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਵਝ ਅਵਰ੝ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਇ ਜੀਉ ॥
गढ़र सबदि समावझ अवरढ़ न जाणै कोइ जीउ ॥
Gur sabaḝ samĝvė avar na jĝṇai koė jīo.
One who is merged in the Word of the Guru's Shabad does not know any other.

ਅਵਰੋ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਗ੝ਰ ਕੈ ਝਕ੝ ਨਾਮ੝ ਧਿਆਵਹੇ ॥
अवरो न जाणहि सबदि गढ़र कै झकढ़ नामढ़ धिआवहे ॥
Avro na jĝṇeh sabaḝ gur kai ėk nĝm ḝẖiĝvhė.
Dwelling upon the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he does not know any other; he meditates on the One Name of the Lord.

ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਗ੝ਰੂ ਅੰਗਦ ਪਰਮ ਪਦਵੀ ਪਾਵਹੇ ॥
परसादि नानक गढ़रू अंगद परम पदवी पावहे ॥
Parsĝḝ Nĝnak gurū angaḝ param paḝvī pĝvhė.
By the Grace of Guru Nanak and Guru Angad, Guru Amar Das obtained the supreme status.

ਆਇਆ ਹਕਾਰਾ ਚਲਣਵਾਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥
आइआ हकारा चलणवारा हरि राम नामि समाइआ ॥
Āiĝ hakĝrĝ cẖalaṇvĝrĝ har rĝm nĝm samĝiĝ.
And when the call came for Him to depart, He merged in the Name of the Lord.

ਜਗਿ ਅਮਰ੝ ਅਟਲ੝ ਅਤੋਲ੝ ਠਾਕ੝ਰ੝ ਭਗਤਿ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
जगि अमरढ़ अटलढ़ अतोलढ़ ठाकढ़रढ़ भगति ते हरि पाइआ ॥१॥
Jag amar atal aṯol ṯẖĝkur bẖagaṯ ṯė har pĝiĝ. ||1||
Through devotional worship in this world, the imperishable, immovable, immeasurable Lord is found. ||1||

ਹਰਿ ਭਾਣਾ ਗ੝ਰ ਭਾਇਆ ਗ੝ਰ੝ ਜਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਪ੝ਰਭ ਪਾਸਿ ਜੀਉ ॥
हरि भाणा गढ़र भाइआ गढ़रढ़ जावै हरि पढ़रभ पासि जीउ ॥
Har bẖĝṇĝ gur bẖĝiĝ gur jĝvai har parabẖ pĝs jīo.
The Guru gladly accepted the Lord's Will, and so the Guru easily reached the Lord God's Presence.

ਸਤਿਗ੝ਰ੝ ਕਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਪਹਿ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਪੈਜ ਰਖਹ੝ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਜੀਉ ॥
सतिगढ़रढ़ करे हरि पहि बेनती मेरी पैज रखहढ़ अरदासि जीउ ॥
Saṯgur karė har peh bėnṯī mėrī paij rakẖahu arḝĝs jīo.
The True Guru prays to the Lord, "Please, save my honor. This is my prayer".

ਪੈਜ ਰਾਖਹ੝ ਹਰਿ ਜਨਹ ਕੇਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਦੇਹ੝ ਨਾਮ੝ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੋ ॥
पैज राखहढ़ हरि जनह केरी हरि देहढ़ नामढ़ निरंजनो ॥
Paij rĝkẖo har janah kėrī har ḝėh nĝm niranjano.
Please save the honor of Your humble servant, O Lord; please bless him with Your Immaculate Name.

ਅੰਤਿ ਚਲਦਿਆ ਹੋਇ ਬੇਲੀ ਜਮਦੂਤ ਕਾਲ੝ ਨਿਖੰਜਨੋ ॥
अंति चलदिआ होइ बेली जमदूत कालढ़ निखंजनो ॥
Anṯ cẖalḝiĝ hoė bėlī jamḝūṯ kĝl nikẖanjano.
At this time of final departure, it is our only help and support; it destroys death, and the Messenger of Death.

ਸਤਿਗ੝ਰੂ ਕੀ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਪਾਈ ਹਰਿ ਪ੝ਰਭਿ ਸ੝ਣੀ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਜੀਉ ॥
सतिगढ़रू की बेनती पाई हरि पढ़रभि सढ़णी अरदासि जीउ ॥
Saṯgurū kī bėnṯī pĝī har parabẖ suṇī arḝĝs jīo.
The Lord God heard the prayer of the True Guru, and granted His request.

ਹਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸਤਿਗ੝ਰ੝ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ਧਨ੝ ਧਨ੝ ਕਹੈ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥
हरि धारि किरपा सतिगढ़रढ़ मिलाइआ धनढ़ धनढ़ कहै साबासि जीउ ॥२॥
Har ḝẖĝr kirpĝ saṯgur milĝiĝ ḝẖan ḝẖan kahai sĝbĝs jīo. ||2||
The Lord showered His Mercy, and blended the True Guru with Himself; He said, "Blessed! Blessed! Wonderful!"||2||

ਮੇਰੇ ਸਿਖ ਸ੝ਣਹ੝ ਪ੝ਤ ਭਾਈਹੋ ਮੇਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਣਾ ਆਉ ਮੈ ਪਾਸਿ ਜੀਉ ॥
मेरे सिख सढ़णहढ़ पढ़त भाईहो मेरै हरि भाणा आउ मै पासि जीउ ॥
Mėrė sikẖ suṇhu puṯ bẖĝīho mėrai har bẖĝṇĝ ĝo mai pĝs jīo.
Listen O my Sikhs, my children and Siblings of Destiny; it is my Lord's Will that I must now go to Him.

ਹਰਿ ਭਾਣਾ ਗ੝ਰ ਭਾਇਆ ਮੇਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਪ੝ਰਭ੝ ਕਰੇ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ਜੀਉ ॥
हरि भाणा गढ़र भाइआ मेरा हरि पढ़रभढ़ करे साबासि जीउ ॥
Har bẖĝṇĝ gur bẖĝiĝ mėrĝ har parabẖ karė sĝbĝs jīo.
The Guru gladly accepted the Lord's Will, and my Lord God applauded Him.

ਭਗਤ੝ ਸਤਿਗ੝ਰ੝ ਪ੝ਰਖ੝ ਸੋਈ ਜਿਸ੝ ਹਰਿ ਪ੝ਰਭ ਭਾਣਾ ਭਾਵਝ ॥
भगतढ़ सतिगढ़रढ़ पढ़रखढ़ सोई जिसढ़ हरि पढ़रभ भाणा भावझ ॥
Bẖagaṯ saṯgur purakẖ soī jis har parabẖ bẖĝṇĝ bẖĝvė.
One who is pleased with the Lord God's Will is a devotee, the True Guru, the Primal Lord.

ਆਨੰਦ ਅਨਹਦ ਵਜਹਿ ਵਾਜੇ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਗਲਿ ਮੇਲਾਵਝ ॥
आनंद अनहद वजहि वाजे हरि आपि गलि मेलावझ ॥
Ānanḝ anhaḝ vajeh vĝjė har ĝp gal mėlĝvaė
. The unstruck sound current of bliss resounds and vibrates; the Lord hugs him close in His embrace.

ਤ੝ਸੀ ਪ੝ਤ ਭਾਈ ਪਰਵਾਰ੝ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨਿ ਵੇਖਹ੝ ਕਰਿ ਨਿਰਜਾਸਿ ਜੀਉ ॥
तढ़सी पढ़त भाई परवारढ़ मेरा मनि वेखहढ़ करि निरजासि जीउ ॥
Ŧusī puṯ bẖĝī parvĝr mėrĝ man vėkẖhu kar nirjĝs jīo.
O my children, siblings and family, look carefully in your minds, and see.

ਧ੝ਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਰਵਾਣਾ ਫਿਰੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗ੝ਰ੝ ਜਾਇ ਹਰਿ ਪ੝ਰਭ ਪਾਸਿ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥
धढ़रि लिखिआ परवाणा फिरै नाही गढ़रढ़ जाइ हरि पढ़रभ पासि जीउ ॥३॥
Ḏẖur likẖiĝ parvĝṇĝ firai nĝhī gur jĝė har parabẖ pĝs jīo. ||3||
The pre-ordained death warrant cannot be avoided; the Guru is going to be with the Lord God. ||3||

ਸਤਿਗ੝ਰਿ ਭਾਣੈ ਆਪਣੈ ਬਹਿ ਪਰਵਾਰ੝ ਸਦਾਇਆ ॥
सतिगढ़रि भाणै आपणै बहि परवारढ़ सदाइआ ॥
Saṯgur bẖĝṇai ĝpṇai bahi parvĝr saḝĝiĝ.
The True Guru, in His Own Sweet Will, sat up and summoned His family.

ਮਤ ਮੈ ਪਿਛੈ ਕੋਈ ਰੋਵਸੀ ਸੋ ਮੈ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
मत मै पिछै कोई रोवसी सो मै मूलि न भाइआ ॥
Maṯ mai picẖẖai koī rovsī so mai mūl na bẖĝiĝ.
Let no one weep for me after I am gone. That would not please me at all.

ਮਿਤ੝ ਪੈਝੈ ਮਿਤ੝ ਬਿਗਸੈ ਜਿਸ੝ ਮਿਤ ਕੀ ਪੈਜ ਭਾਵਝ ॥
मितढ़ पैझै मितढ़ बिगसै जिसढ़ मित की पैज भावझ ॥
Miṯ paijẖai miṯ bigsai jis miṯ kī paij bẖĝvė.
When a friend receives a robe of honor, then his friends are pleased with his honor.

ਤ੝ਸੀ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਦੇਖਹ੝ ਪ੝ਤ ਭਾਈ ਹਰਿ ਸਤਿਗ੝ਰੂ ਪੈਨਾਵਝ ॥
तढ़सी वीचारि देखहढ़ पढ़त भाई हरि सतिगढ़रू पैनावझ ॥
Ŧusī vīcẖĝr ḝėkẖhu puṯ bẖĝī har saṯgurū painĝvaė.
Consider this and see, O my children and siblings; the Lord has given the True Guru the robe of supreme honor.

ਸਤਿਗ੝ਰੂ ਪਰਤਖਿ ਹੋਦੈ ਬਹਿ ਰਾਜ੝ ਆਪਿ ਟਿਕਾਇਆ ॥
सतिगढ़रू परतखि होदै बहि राजढ़ आपि टिकाइआ ॥
Saṯgurū parṯakẖ hoḝai bahi rĝj ĝp tikĝiĝ.
The True Guru Himself sat up, and appointed the successor to the Throne of Raja Yoga, the Yoga of Meditation and Success.

ਸਭਿ ਸਿਖ ਬੰਧਪ ਪ੝ਤ ਭਾਈ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਪੈਰੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੪॥
सभि सिख बंधप पढ़त भाई रामदास पैरी पाइआ ॥४॥
Sabẖ sikẖ banḝẖap puṯ bẖĝī Rĝmḝĝs pairī pĝiĝ. ||4||
All the Sikhs, relatives, children and siblings have fallen at the Feet of Guru Ram Das. ||4||

ਅੰਤੇ ਸਤਿਗ੝ਰ੝ ਬੋਲਿਆ ਮੈ ਪਿਛੈ ਕੀਰਤਨ੝ ਕਰਿਅਹ੝ ਨਿਰਬਾਣ੝ ਜੀਉ ॥
अंते सतिगढ़रढ़ बोलिआ मै पिछै कीरतनढ़ करिअहढ़ निरबाणढ़ जीउ ॥
Anṯė saṯgur boliĝ mai picẖẖai kīrṯan kariahu nirbĝṇ jīo.
Finally, the True Guru said, "When I am gone, sing Kirtan in Praise of the Lord, in Nirvaanaa".

ਕੇਸੋ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਸਦਿਅਹ੝ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਪੜਹਿ ਪ੝ਰਾਣ੝ ਜੀਉ ॥
केसो गोपाल पंडित सदिअहढ़ हरि हरि कथा पड़हि पढ़राणढ़ जीउ ॥
Kėso gopĝl pandiṯ saḝiahu har har kathĝ paṛeh purĝṇ jīo.
Call in the long-haired scholarly Saints of the Lord, to read the sermon of the Lord, Har, Har.

ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਪੜੀਝ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ੝ ਸ੝ਣੀਝ ਬੇਬਾਣ੝ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗ੝ ਗ੝ਰ ਭਾਵਝ ॥
हरि कथा पड़ीझ हरि नामढ़ सढ़णीझ बेबाणढ़ हरि रंगढ़ गढ़र भावझ ॥
Har kathĝ paṛīai har nĝm suṇīai bėbĝṇ har rang gur bẖĝvė.
Read the sermon of the Lord, and listen to the Lord's Name; the Guru is pleased with love for the Lord.

ਪਿੰਡ੝ ਪਤਲਿ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਦੀਵਾ ਫ੝ਲ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਿ ਪਾਵਝ ॥
पिंडढ़ पतलि किरिआ दीवा फढ़ल हरि सरि पावझ ॥
Pind paṯal kiriĝ ḝīvĝ ful har sar pĝvė.
Do not bother with offering rice-balls on leaves, lighting lamps, and other rituals like floating the body out on the Ganges; instead, let my remains be given up to the Lord's Pool.

ਹਰਿ ਭਾਇਆ ਸਤਿਗ੝ਰ੝ ਬੋਲਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਪ੝ਰਖ੝ ਸ੝ਜਾਣ੝ ਜੀਉ ॥
हरि भाइआ सतिगढ़रढ़ बोलिआ हरि मिलिआ पढ़रखढ़ सढ़जाणढ़ जीउ ॥
Har bẖĝiĝ saṯgur boliĝ har miliĝ purakẖ sujĝṇ jīo.
The Lord was pleased as the True Guru spoke; he was blended then with the all-knowing Primal Lord God.

ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਸੋਢੀ ਤਿਲਕ੝ ਦੀਆ ਗ੝ਰ ਸਬਦ੝ ਸਚ੝ ਨੀਸਾਣ੝ ਜੀਉ ॥੫॥
रामदास सोढी तिलकढ़ दीआ गढ़र सबदढ़ सचढ़ नीसाणढ़ जीउ ॥५॥
Rĝmḝĝs sodẖī ṯilak ḝīĝ gur sabaḝ sacẖ nīsĝṇ jīo. ||5||
The Guru then blessed the Sodhi Ram Das with the ceremonial tilak mark, the insignia of the True Word of the Shabad. ||5||

ਸਤਿਗ੝ਰ੝ ਪ੝ਰਖ੝ ਜਿ ਬੋਲਿਆ ਗ੝ਰਸਿਖਾ ਮੰਨਿ ਲਈ ਰਜਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥
सतिगढ़रढ़ पढ़रखढ़ जि बोलिआ गढ़रसिखा मंनि लई रजाइ जीउ ॥
Saṯgur purakẖ je boliĝ gursikẖĝ man laī rajĝė jīo.
And as the True Guru, the Primal Lord spoke, and the Gursikhs obeyed His Will.

ਮੋਹਰੀ ਪ੝ਤ੝ ਸਨਮ੝ਖ੝ ਹੋਇਆ ਰਾਮਦਾਸੈ ਪੈਰੀ ਪਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥
मोहरी पढ़तढ़ सनमढ़खढ़ होइआ रामदासै पैरी पाइ जीउ ॥
Mohrī puṯ sanmukẖ hoiĝ Rĝmḝĝsai pairī pĝė jīo.
His son Mohri turned sunmukh, and become obedient to Him; he bowed, and touched Ram Das' feet.

ਸਭ ਪਵੈ ਪੈਰੀ ਸਤਿਗ੝ਰੂ ਕੇਰੀ ਜਿਥੈ ਗ੝ਰੂ ਆਪ੝ ਰਖਿਆ ॥
सभ पवै पैरी सतिगढ़रू केरी जिथै गढ़रू आपढ़ रखिआ ॥
Sabẖ pavai pairī saṯgurū kėrī jithai gurū ĝp rakẖiĝ.
Then, everyone bowed and touched the feet of Ram Das, into whom the Guru infused His essence.

ਕੋਈ ਕਰਿ ਬਖੀਲੀ ਨਿਵੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਸਤਿਗ੝ਰੂ ਆਣਿ ਨਿਵਾਇਆ ॥
कोई करि बखीली निवै नाही फिरि सतिगढ़रू आणि निवाइआ ॥
Koī kar bakẖīlī nivai nĝhī fir saṯgurū ĝṇ nivĝiĝ.
And any that did not bow then because of envy - later, the True Guru brought them around to bow in humility.

ਹਰਿ ਗ੝ਰਹਿ ਭਾਣਾ ਦੀਈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਧ੝ਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲੇਖ੝ ਰਜਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥
हरि गढ़रहि भाणा दीई वडिआई धढ़रि लिखिआ लेखढ़ रजाइ जीउ ॥
Har gureh bẖĝṇĝ ḝīī vadiĝī ḝẖur likẖiĝ lėkẖ rajĝė jīo.
It pleased the Guru, the Lord, to bestow glorious greatness upon Him; such was the pre-ordained destiny of the Lord's Will.

ਕਹੈ ਸ੝ੰਦਰ੝ ਸ੝ਣਹ੝ ਸੰਤਹ੝ ਸਭ੝ ਜਗਤ੝ ਪੈਰੀ ਪਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥੬॥੧॥
कहै सढ़ंदरढ़ सढ़णहढ़ संतहढ़ सभढ़ जगतढ़ पैरी पाइ जीउ ॥६॥१॥
Kahai sunḝar suṇhu sanṯahu sabẖ jagaṯ pairī pĝė jīo. ||6||1||
Says Sundar, listen, O Saints: all the world fell at His feet. ||6||1||
