The Desecration of Harimandir Sahib

In about 1740, Massa Ranghar, the Moghul Officer in Amritsar, turned the Harimandir Sahib into a pleasure palace; holding parties for the enjoyment of female entertainment, smoking, and many other desecrations. A Sikh who had observed this brought the news to Mahtab Singh (a Jat of Mirankot) and Sukha Singh (a carpenter of Mari Kambo), two of the Sikhs who were then in hiding in Bikanir.

"How could you see the temple desecrated and still live?" they asked the bearer of the news. They started at once to Amritsar disguised as Musslemen. They carried with them a bag of round stones resembleing coins and approached Massa, pretending to pay their taxes. One of them distracted the Moghul by conversation when the other suddenly drew his sword and cut off Massa Ranghar's head. The Sikhs ran from the hall befor any in the court could react and rode away.
