ਸਲੋਕ੝ ॥
Salok.
Shalok:
ਦੇਨਹਾਰ੝ ਪ੝ਰਭ ਛੋਡਿ ਕੈ ਲਾਗਹਿ ਆਨ ਸ੝ਆਇ ॥
Ḏenhĝr parabẖ cẖẖod kai lĝgėh ĝn su▫ĝ▫e.
One who renounces God the Giver, and attaches himself to other affairs -
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਹੂ ਨ ਸੀਝਈ ਬਿਨ੝ ਨਾਵੈ ਪਤਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
Nĝnak kahū na sījẖ▫ī bin nĝvai paṯ jĝ▫e. ((1))
O Nanak, he shall never succeed. Without the Name, he shall lose his honor. ((1))

ਅਸਟਪਦੀ ॥
Asatpaḝī.
Ashtapadee:
ਦਸ ਬਸਤੂ ਲੇ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
Ḏas basṯū le pĝcẖẖai pĝvai.
He obtains ten things, and puts them behind him;
ਝਕ ਬਸਤ੝ ਕਾਰਨਿ ਬਿਖੋਟਿ ਗਵਾਵੈ ॥
Ėk basaṯ kĝran bikẖot gavĝvai.
for the sake of one thing withheld, he forfeits his faith.
ਝਕ ਭੀ ਨ ਦੇਇ ਦਸ ਭੀ ਹਿਰਿ ਲੇਇ ॥
Ėk bẖī na ḝe▫e ḝas bẖī hir le▫e.
But what if that one thing were not given, and the ten were taken away?
ਤਉ ਮੂੜਾ ਕਹ੝ ਕਹਾ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
Ŧa▫o mūṛĝ kaho kahĝ kare▫i.
Then, what could the fool say or do?
ਜਿਸ੝ ਠਾਕ੝ਰ ਸਿਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਚਾਰਾ ॥
Jis ṯẖĝkur si▫o nĝhī cẖĝrĝ.
Our Lord and Master cannot be moved by force.
ਤਾ ਕਉ ਕੀਜੈ ਸਦ ਨਮਸਕਾਰਾ ॥
Ŧĝ ka▫o kījai saḝ namaskĝrĝ.
Unto Him, bow forever in adoration.
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਪ੝ਰਭ੝ ਮੀਠਾ ॥
Jĝ kai man lĝgĝ parabẖ mīṯẖĝ.
That one, unto whose mind God seems sweet -
ਸਰਬ ਸੂਖ ਤਾਹੂ ਮਨਿ ਵੂਠਾ ॥
Sarab sūkẖ ṯĝhū man vūṯẖĝ.
all pleasures come to abide in his mind.
ਜਿਸ੝ ਜਨ ਅਪਨਾ ਹ੝ਕਮ੝ ਮਨਾਇਆ ॥
Jis jan apnĝ hukam manĝ▫i▫ĝ.
One who abides by the Lord's Will,
ਸਰਬ ਥੋਕ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
Sarab thok Nĝnak ṯin pĝ▫i▫ĝ. ((1))
O Nanak, obtains all things. ((1))

ਅਗਨਤ ਸਾਹ੝ ਅਪਨੀ ਦੇ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
Agnaṯ sĝhu apnī ḝe rĝs.
God the Banker gives endless capital to the mortal,
ਖਾਤ ਪੀਤ ਬਰਤੈ ਅਨਦ ਉਲਾਸਿ ॥
Kẖĝṯ pīṯ barṯai anaḝ ulĝs.
who eats, drinks and expends it with pleasure and joy.
ਅਪ੝ਨੀ ਅਮਾਨ ਕਛ੝ ਬਹ੝ਰਿ ਸਾਹ੝ ਲੇਇ ॥
Apunī amĝn kacẖẖ bahur sĝhu le▫e.
If some of this capital is later taken back by the Banker,
ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਮਨਿ ਰੋਸ੝ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
Agi▫ĝnī man ros kare▫i.
the ignorant person shows his anger.
ਅਪਨੀ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਖੋਵੈ ॥
Apnī parṯīṯ ĝp hī kẖovai.
He himself destroys his own credibility,
ਬਹ੝ਰਿ ਉਸ ਕਾ ਬਿਸ੝ਵਾਸ੝ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
Bahur us kĝ bisvĝs na hovai.
and he shall not again be trusted.
ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਬਸਤ੝ ਤਿਸ੝ ਆਗੈ ਰਾਖੈ ॥
Jis kī basaṯ ṯis ĝgai rĝkẖai.
When one offers to the Lord, that which belongs to the Lord,
ਪ੝ਰਭ ਕੀ ਆਗਿਆ ਮਾਨੈ ਮਾਥੈ ॥
Parabẖ kī ĝgi▫ĝ mĝnai mĝthai.
and willingly abides by the Will of God's Order,
ਉਸ ਤੇ ਚਉਗ੝ਨ ਕਰੈ ਨਿਹਾਲ੝ ॥
Us ṯe cẖa▫ugun karai nihĝl.
the Lord will make him happy four times over.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬ੝ ਸਦਾ ਦਇਆਲ੝ ॥੨॥
Nĝnak sĝhib saḝĝ ḝa▫i▫ĝl. ((2))
O Nanak, our Lord and Master is merciful forever. ((2))

ਅਨਿਕ ਭਾਤਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਹੇਤ ॥
Anik bẖĝṯ mĝ▫i▫ĝ ke heṯ.
The many forms of attachment to Maya,
ਸਰਪਰ ਹੋਵਤ ਜਾਨ੝ ਅਨੇਤ ॥
Sarpar hovaṯ jĝn aneṯ.
shall surely pass away - know that they are transitory.
ਬਿਰਖ ਕੀ ਛਾਇਆ ਸਿਉ ਰੰਗ੝ ਲਾਵੈ ॥
Birakẖ kī cẖẖĝ▫i▫ĝ si▫o rang lĝvai.
People fall in love with the shade of the tree,
ਓਹ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਉਹ੝ ਮਨਿ ਪਛ੝ਤਾਵੈ ॥
Oh binsai uho man pacẖẖuṯĝvai.
and when it passes away, they feel regret in their minds.
ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਚਾਲਨਹਾਰ੝ ॥
Jo ḝīsai so cẖĝlanhĝr.
Whatever is seen, shall pass away;
ਲਪਟਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਤਹ ਅੰਧ ਅੰਧਾਰ੝ ॥
Lapat rahi▫o ṯah anḝẖ anḝẖĝr.
and yet, the blindest of the blind cling to it.
ਬਟਾਊ ਸਿਉ ਜੋ ਲਾਵੈ ਨੇਹ ॥
Batĝ▫ū si▫o jo lĝvai neh.
One who gives her love to a passing traveler -
ਤਾ ਕਉ ਹਾਥਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਕੇਹ ॥
Ŧĝ ka▫o hĝth na ĝvai keh.
nothing shall come into her hands in this way.
ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਪ੝ਰੀਤਿ ਸ੝ਖਦਾਈ ॥
Man har ke nĝm kī parīṯ sukẖ▫ḝĝ▫ī.
O mind, the love of the Name of the Lord bestows peace.
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਿ ਲਝ ਲਾਈ ॥੩॥
Kar kirpĝ Nĝnak ĝp la▫e lĝ▫ī. ((3))
O Nanak, the Lord, in His Mercy, unites us with Himself. ((3))

ਮਿਥਿਆ ਤਨ੝ ਧਨ੝ ਕ੝ਟੰਬ੝ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥
Mithi▫ĝ ṯan ḝẖan kutamb sabĝ▫i▫ĝ.
False are body, wealth, and all relations.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
Mithi▫ĝ ha▫umai mamṯĝ mĝ▫i▫ĝ.
False are ego, possessiveness and Maya.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਰਾਜ ਜੋਬਨ ਧਨ ਮਾਲ ॥
Mithi▫ĝ rĝj joban ḝẖan mĝl.
False are power, youth, wealth and property.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਕਾਮ ਕ੝ਰੋਧ ਬਿਕਰਾਲ ॥
Mithi▫ĝ kĝm kroḝẖ bikrĝl.
False are sexual desire and wild anger.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਰਥ ਹਸਤੀ ਅਸ੝ਵ ਬਸਤ੝ਰਾ ॥
Mithi▫ĝ rath hasṯī asav basṯarĝ.
False are chariots, elephants, horses and expensive clothes.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਰੰਗ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਪੇਖਿ ਹਸਤਾ ॥
Mithi▫ĝ rang sang mĝ▫i▫ĝ pekẖ hasṯĝ.
False is the love of gathering wealth, and reveling in the sight of it.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਧ੝ਰੋਹ ਮੋਹ ਅਭਿਮਾਨ੝ ॥
Mithi▫ĝ ḝẖaroh moh abẖimĝn.
False are deception, emotional attachment and egotistical pride.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਆਪਸ ਊਪਰਿ ਕਰਤ ਗ੝ਮਾਨ੝ ॥
Mithi▫ĝ ĝpas ūpar karaṯ gumĝn.
False are pride and self-conceit.
ਅਸਥਿਰ੝ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਾਧ ਕੀ ਸਰਨ ॥
Asthir bẖagaṯ sĝḝẖ kī saran.
Only devotional worship is permanent, and the Sanctuary of the Holy.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਪਿ ਜਪਿ ਜੀਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਚਰਨ ॥੪॥
Nĝnak jap jap jīvai har ke cẖaran. ((4))
Nanak lives by meditating, meditating on the Lotus Feet of the Lord. ((4))

ਮਿਥਿਆ ਸ੝ਰਵਨ ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਸ੝ਨਹਿ ॥
Mithi▫ĝ sarvan par ninḝĝ sunėh.
False are the ears which listen to the slander of others.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਹਸਤ ਪਰ ਦਰਬ ਕਉ ਹਿਰਹਿ ॥
Mithi▫ĝ hasaṯ par ḝarab ka▫o hirėh.
False are the hands which steal the wealth of others.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਨੇਤ੝ਰ ਪੇਖਤ ਪਰ ਤ੝ਰਿਅ ਰੂਪਾਦ ॥
Mithi▫ĝ neṯar pekẖaṯ par ṯari▫a rūpĝḝ.
False are the eyes which gaze upon the beauty of another's wife.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਰਸਨਾ ਭੋਜਨ ਅਨ ਸ੝ਵਾਦ ॥
Mithi▫ĝ rasnĝ bẖojan an savĝḝ.
False is the tongue which enjoys delicacies and external tastes.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਚਰਨ ਪਰ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਕਉ ਧਾਵਹਿ ॥
Mithi▫ĝ cẖaran par bikĝr ka▫o ḝẖĝvėh.
False are the feet which run to do evil to others.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਮਨ ਪਰ ਲੋਭ ਲ੝ਭਾਵਹਿ ॥
Mithi▫ĝ man par lobẖ lubẖĝvėh.
False is the mind which covets the wealth of others.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਤਨ ਨਹੀ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰਾ ॥
Mithi▫ĝ ṯan nahī par▫upkĝrĝ.
False is the body which does not do good to others.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਬਾਸ੝ ਲੇਤ ਬਿਕਾਰਾ ॥
Mithi▫ĝ bĝs leṯ bikĝrĝ.
False is the nose which inhales corruption.
ਬਿਨ੝ ਬੂਝੇ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਸਭ ਭਝ ॥
Bin būjẖe mithi▫ĝ sabẖ bẖa▫e.
Without understanding, everything is false.
ਸਫਲ ਦੇਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਲਝ ॥੫॥
Safal ḝeh Nĝnak har har nĝm la▫e. ((5))
Fruitful is the body, O Nanak, which takes to the Lord's Name. ((5))

ਬਿਰਥੀ ਸਾਕਤ ਕੀ ਆਰਜਾ ॥
Birthī sĝkaṯ kī ĝrjĝ.
The life of the faithless cynic is totally useless.
ਸਾਚ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਹ ਹੋਵਤ ਸੂਚਾ ॥
Sĝcẖ binĝ kah hovaṯ sūcẖĝ.
Without the Truth, how can anyone be pure?
ਬਿਰਥਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਤਨ੝ ਅੰਧ ॥
Birthĝ nĝm binĝ ṯan anḝẖ.
Useless is the body of the spiritually blind, without the Name of the Lord.
ਮ੝ਖਿ ਆਵਤ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਦ੝ਰਗੰਧ ॥
Mukẖ ĝvaṯ ṯĝ kai ḝurganḝẖ.
From his mouth, a foul smell issues forth.
ਬਿਨ੝ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦਿਨ੝ ਰੈਨਿ ਬ੝ਰਿਥਾ ਬਿਹਾਇ ॥
Bin simran ḝin rain baritha bihĝ▫e.
Without the remembrance of the Lord, day and night pass in vain,
ਮੇਘ ਬਿਨਾ ਜਿਉ ਖੇਤੀ ਜਾਇ ॥
Megẖ binĝ ji▫o kẖeṯī jĝ▫e.
like the crop which withers without rain.
ਗੋਬਿਦ ਭਜਨ ਬਿਨ੝ ਬ੝ਰਿਥੇ ਸਭ ਕਾਮ ॥
Gobiḝ bẖajan bin barithe sabẖ kĝm.
Without meditation on the Lord of the Universe, all works are in vain,
ਜਿਉ ਕਿਰਪਨ ਕੇ ਨਿਰਾਰਥ ਦਾਮ ॥
Ji▫o kirpan ke nirĝrath ḝĝm.
like the wealth of a miser, which lies useless.
ਧੰਨਿ ਧੰਨਿ ਤੇ ਜਨ ਜਿਹ ਘਟਿ ਬਸਿਓ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ॥
Ḏẖan ḝẖan ṯe jan jih gẖat basi▫o har nĝ▫o.
Blessed, blessed are those, whose hearts are filled with the Name of the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥੬॥
Nĝnak ṯĝ kai bal bal jĝ▫o. ((6))
Nanak is a sacrifice, a sacrifice to them. ((6))

ਰਹਤ ਅਵਰ ਕਛ੝ ਅਵਰ ਕਮਾਵਤ ॥
Rahaṯ avar kacẖẖ avar kamĝvaṯ.
He says one thing, and does something else.
ਮਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਪ੝ਰੀਤਿ ਮ੝ਖਹ੝ ਗੰਢ ਲਾਵਤ ॥
Man nahī parīṯ mukẖahu gandẖ lĝvaṯ.
There is no love in his heart, and yet with his mouth he talks tall.
ਜਾਨਨਹਾਰ ਪ੝ਰਭੂ ਪਰਬੀਨ ॥
Jĝnanhĝr parabẖū parbīn.
The Omniscient Lord God is the Knower of all.
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਭੇਖ ਨ ਕਾਹੂ ਭੀਨ ॥
Bĝhar bẖekẖ na kĝhū bẖīn.
He is not impressed by outward display.
ਅਵਰ ਉਪਦੇਸੈ ਆਪਿ ਨ ਕਰੈ ॥
Avar upḝesai ĝp na karai.
One who does not practice what he preaches to others,
ਆਵਤ ਜਾਵਤ ਜਨਮੈ ਮਰੈ ॥
Āvaṯ jĝvaṯ janmai marai.
shall come and go in reincarnation, through birth and death.
ਜਿਸ ਕੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਸੈ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ੝ ॥
Jis kai anṯar basai nirankĝr.
One whose inner being is filled with the Formless Lord -
ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਸੀਖ ਤਰੈ ਸੰਸਾਰ੝ ॥
Ŧis kī sīkẖ ṯarai sansĝr.
by his teachings, the world is saved.
ਜੋ ਤ੝ਮ ਭਾਨੇ ਤਿਨ ਪ੝ਰਭ੝ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
Jo ṯum bẖĝne ṯin parabẖ jĝṯĝ.
Those who are pleasing to You, God, know You.
ਨਾਨਕ ਉਨ ਜਨ ਚਰਨ ਪਰਾਤਾ ॥੭॥
Nĝnak un jan cẖaran parĝṯĝ. ((7))
Nanak falls at their feet. ((7))

ਕਰਉ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਪਾਰਬ੝ਰਹਮ੝ ਸਭ੝ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
Kara▫o benṯī pĝrbarahm sabẖ jĝnai.
Offer your prayers to the Supreme Lord God, who knows everything.
ਅਪਨਾ ਕੀਆ ਆਪਹਿ ਮਾਨੈ ॥
Apnĝ kī▫ĝ ĝpėh mĝnai.
He Himself values His own creatures.
ਆਪਹਿ ਆਪ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਤ ਨਿਬੇਰਾ ॥
Āpėh ĝp ĝp karaṯ niberĝ.
He Himself, by Himself, makes the decisions.
ਕਿਸੈ ਦੂਰਿ ਜਨਾਵਤ ਕਿਸੈ ਬ੝ਝਾਵਤ ਨੇਰਾ ॥
Kisai ḝūr janĝvaṯ kisai bujẖĝvaṯ nerĝ.
To some, He appears far away, while others perceive Him near at hand.
ਉਪਾਵ ਸਿਆਨਪ ਸਗਲ ਤੇ ਰਹਤ ॥
Upĝv si▫ĝnap sagal ṯe rahaṯ.
He is beyond all efforts and clever tricks.
ਸਭ੝ ਕਛ੝ ਜਾਨੈ ਆਤਮ ਕੀ ਰਹਤ ॥
Sabẖ kacẖẖ jĝnai ĝṯam kī rahaṯ.
He knows all the ways and means of the soul.
ਜਿਸ੝ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਸ੝ ਲਝ ਲੜਿ ਲਾਇ ॥
Jis bẖĝvai ṯis la▫e laṛ lĝ▫e.
Those with whom He is pleased are attached to the hem of His robe.
ਥਾਨ ਥਨੰਤਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
Thĝn thananṯar rahi▫ĝ samĝ▫e.
He is pervading all places and interspaces.
ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕ੝ ਜਿਸ੝ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੀ ॥
So sevak jis kirpĝ karī.
Those upon whom He bestows His favor, become His servants.
ਨਿਮਖ ਨਿਮਖ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰੀ ॥੮॥੫॥
Nimakẖ nimakẖ jap Nĝnak harī. ((8)(5))
Each and every moment, O Nanak, meditate on the Lord. ((8)(5))
