ਸੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਭਇਆ ॥ सो बूझै जिसु आपि बुझाए गुर कै सबदि सु मुकतु भइआ ॥ He alone understands, whom the Lord inspires to understand. Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, one is liberated.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾਰੇ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਪਰਹਰਿਆ ॥੨੫॥ नानक तारे तारणहारा हउमै दूजा परहरिआ ॥२५॥ O Nanak, the Emancipator emancipates one who drives out egotism and duality. ||25||

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਭੂਲੈ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਕਾਣਿ ॥ मनमुखि भूलै जम की काणि ॥ The self-willed manmukhs are deluded, under the shadow of death.

ਪਰ ਘਰੁ ਜੋਹੈ ਹਾਣੇ ਹਾਣਿ ॥ पर घरु जोहै हाणे हाणि ॥ They look into the homes of others, and lose.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਭਵੈ ਬੇਬਾਣਿ ॥ मनमुखि भरमि भवै बेबाणि ॥ The manmukhs are confused by doubt, wandering in the wilderness.

ਵੇਮਾਰਗਿ ਮੂਸੈ ਮੰਤ੍ਰਿ ਮਸਾਣਿ ॥ वेमारगि मूसै मंत्रि मसाणि ॥ Having lost their way, they are plundered; they chant their mantras at cremation grounds.

ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਚੀਨੈ ਲਵੈ ਕੁਬਾਣਿ ॥ सबदु न चीनै लवै कुबाणि ॥ They do not think of the Shabad; instead, they utter obscenities.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਜਾਣਿ ॥੨੬॥ नानक साचि रते सुखु जाणि ॥२६॥ O Nanak, those who are attuned to the Truth know peace. ||26||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ गुरमुखि साचे का भउ पावै ॥ The Gurmukh lives in the Fear of God, the True Lord.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਅਘੜੁ ਘੜਾਵੈ ॥ गुरमुखि बाणी अघड़ु घड़ावै ॥ Through the Word of the Guru's Bani, the Gurmukh refines the unrefined.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥ गुरमुखि निरमल हरि गुण गावै ॥ The Gurmukh sings the immaculate, Glorious Praises of the Lord.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰੁ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ गुरमुखि पवित्रु परम पदु पावै ॥ The Gurmukh attains the supreme, sanctified status.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰੋਮਿ ਰੋਮਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥ गुरमुखि रोमि रोमि हरि धिआवै ॥ The Gurmukh meditates on the Lord with every hair of his body.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੨੭॥ नानक गुरमुखि साचि समावै ॥२७॥ O Nanak, the Gurmukh merges in Truth. ||27||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਚੈ ਬੇਦ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥ गुरमुखि परचै बेद बीचारी ॥ The Gurmukh is pleasing to the True Guru; this is contemplation on the Vedas.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਚੈ ਤਰੀਐ ਤਾਰੀ ॥ गुरमुखि परचै तरीऐ तारी ॥ Pleasing the True Guru, the Gurmukh is carried across.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਚੈ ਸੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਗਿਆਨੀ ॥ गुरमुखि परचै सु सबदि गिआनी ॥ Pleasing the True Guru, the Gurmukh receives the spiritual wisdom of the Shabad.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਚੈ ਅੰਤਰ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਨੀ ॥ गुरमुखि परचै अंतर बिधि जानी ॥ Pleasing the True Guru, the Gurmukh comes to know the path within.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥ गुरमुखि पाईऐ अलख अपारु ॥ The Gurmukh attains the unseen and infinite Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥੨੮॥ नानक गुरमुखि मुकति दुआरु ॥२८॥ O Nanak, the Gurmukh finds the door of liberation. ||28||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਕਥੁ ਕਥੈ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ गुरमुखि अकथु कथै बीचारि ॥ The Gurmukh speaks the unspoken wisdom.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਬਹੈ ਸਪਰਵਾਰਿ ॥ गुरमुखि निबहै सपरवारि ॥ In the midst of his family, the Gurmukh lives a spiritual life.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥ गुरमुखि जपीऐ अंतरि पिआरि ॥ The Gurmukh lovingly meditates deep within.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਅਚਾਰਿ ॥ गुरमुखि पाईऐ सबदि अचारि ॥ The Gurmukh obtains the Shabad, and righteous conduct.

ਸਬਦਿ ਭੇਦਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਾਣਾਈ ॥ सबदि भेदि जाणै जाणाई ॥ He knows the mystery of the Shabad, and inspires others to know it.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਲਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੨੯॥ नानक हउमै जालि समाई ॥२९॥ O Nanak, burning away his ego, he merges in the Lord. ||29||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਧਰਤੀ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਾਜੀ ॥ गुरमुखि धरती साचै साजी ॥ The True Lord fashioned the earth for the sake of the Gurmukhs.

ਤਿਸ ਮਹਿ ਓਪਤਿ ਖਪਤਿ ਸੁ ਬਾਜੀ ॥ तिस महि ओपति खपति सु बाजी ॥ There, he set in motion the play of creation and destruction.

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਪੈ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਇ ॥ गुर कै सबदि रपै रंगु लाइ ॥ One who is filled with the Word of the Guru's Shabad enshrines love for the Lord.

ਸਾਚਿ ਰਤਉ ਪਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥ साचि रतउ पति सिउ घरि जाइ ॥ Attuned to the Truth, he goes to his home with honor.

ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ साच सबद बिनु पति नही पावै ॥ Without the True Word of the Shabad, no one receives honor.

ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਉ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੩੦॥ नानक बिनु नावै किउ साचि समावै ॥३०॥ O Nanak, without the Name, how can one be absorbed in Truth? ||30||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਸਟ ਸਿਧੀ ਸਭਿ ਬੁਧੀ ॥ गुरमुखि असट सिधी सभि बुधी ॥ The Gurmukh obtains the eight miraculous spiritual powers, and all wisdom.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਤਰੀਐ ਸਚ ਸੁਧੀ ॥ गुरमुखि भवजलु तरीऐ सच सुधी ॥ The Gurmukh crosses over the terrifying world-ocean, and obtains true understanding.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਰ ਅਪਸਰ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ गुरमुखि सर अपसर बिधि जाणै ॥ The Gurmukh knows the ways of truth and untruth.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਵਿਰਤਿ ਨਰਵਿਰਤਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥ गुरमुखि परविरति नरविरति पछाणै ॥ The Gurmukh knows worldliness and renunciation.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਾਰੇ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੇ ॥ गुरमुखि तारे पारि उतारे ॥ The Gurmukh crosses over, and carries others across as well.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੩੧॥ नानक गुरमुखि सबदि निसतारे ॥३१॥ O Nanak, the Gurmukh is emancipated through the Shabad. ||31||

ਨਾਮੇ ਰਾਤੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ नामे राते हउमै जाइ ॥ Attuned to the Naam, the Name of the Lord, egotism is dispelled.

ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੇ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ नामि रते सचि रहे समाइ ॥ Attuned to the Naam, they remain absorbed in the True Lord.

ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ नामि रते जोग जुगति बीचारु ॥ Attuned to the Naam, they contemplate the Way of Yoga.

ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥ नामि रते पावहि मोख दुआरु ॥ Attuned to the Naam, they find the door of liberation.

ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਇ ॥ नामि रते त्रिभवण सोझी होइ ॥ Attuned to the Naam, they understand the three worlds.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੩੨॥ नानक नामि रते सदा सुखु होइ ॥३२॥ O Nanak, attuned to the Naam, eternal peace is found. ||32||

ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਿਧ ਗੋਸਟਿ ਹੋਇ ॥ नामि रते सिध गोसटि होइ ॥ Attuned to the Naam, they attain Sidh Gosht - conversation with the Siddhas.

ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਤਪੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ नामि रते सदा तपु होइ ॥ Attuned to the Naam, they practice intense meditation forever.

ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਚੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰੁ ॥ नामि रते सचु करणी सारु ॥ Attuned to the Naam, they live the true and excellent lifestyle.

ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਿਆਨ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ नामि रते गुण गिआन बीचारु ॥ Attuned to the Naam, they contemplate the Lord's virtues and spiritual wisdom.

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਬੋਲੈ ਸਭੁ ਵੇਕਾਰੁ ॥ बिनु नावै बोलै सभु वेकारु ॥ Without the Name, all that is spoken is useless.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਜੈਕਾਰੁ ॥੩੩॥ नानक नामि रते तिन कउ जैकारु ॥३३॥ O Nanak, attuned to the Naam, their victory is celebrated. ||33||

ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥ पूरे गुर ते नामु पाइआ जाइ ॥ Through the Perfect Guru, one obtains the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ जोग जुगति सचि रहै समाइ ॥ The Way of Yoga is to remain absorbed in Truth.

ਬਾਰਹ ਮਹਿ ਜੋਗੀ ਭਰਮਾਏ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਛਿਅ ਚਾਰਿ ॥ बारह महि जोगी भरमाए संनिआसी छिअ चारि ॥ The Yogis wander in the twelve schools of Yoga; the Sannyaasis in six and four.

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਜੋ ਮਰਿ ਜੀਵੈ ਸੋ ਪਾਏ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥ गुर कै सबदि जो मरि जीवै सो पाए मोख दुआरु ॥ One who remains dead while yet alive, through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, finds the door of liberation.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਸਭਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਲਾਗੇ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
बिनु सबदै सभि दूजै लागे देखहु रिदै बीचारि ॥
Without the Shabad, all are attached to duality. Contemplate this in your heart, and see.

ਨਾਨਕ ਵਡੇ ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੁ ਰਖਿਆ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੩੪॥
नानक वडे से वडभागी जिनी सचु रखिआ उर धारि ॥३४॥
O Nanak, blessed and very fortunate are those who keep the True Lord enshrined in their hearts. ||34||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਤਨੁ ਲਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
गुरमुखि रतनु लहै लिव लाइ ॥
The Gurmukh obtains the jewel, lovingly focused on the Lord.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਖੈ ਰਤਨੁ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
गुरमुखि परखै रतनु सुभाइ ॥
The Gurmukh intuitively recognizes the value of this jewel.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
गुरमुखि साची कार कमाइ ॥
The Gurmukh practices Truth in action.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਮਨੁ ਪਤੀਆਇ ॥
गुरमुखि साचे मनु पतीआइ ॥
The mind of the Gurmukh is pleased with the True Lord.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
गुरमुखि अलखु लखाए तिसु भावै ॥
The Gurmukh sees the unseen, when it pleases the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚੋਟ ਨ ਖਾਵੈ ॥੩੫॥
नानक गुरमुखि चोट न खावै ॥३५॥
O Nanak, the Gurmukh does not have to endure punishment. ||35||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ॥
गुरमुखि नामु दानु इसनानु ॥
The Gurmukh is blessed with the Name, charity and purification.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥
गुरमुखि लागै सहजि धिआनु ॥
The Gurmukh centers his meditation on the celestial Lord.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਦਰਗਹ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
गुरमुखि पावै दरगह मानु ॥
The Gurmukh obtains honor in the Court of the Lord.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਉ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਪਰਧਾਨੁ ॥
गुरमुखि भउ भंजनु परधानु ॥
The Gurmukh obtains the Supreme Lord, the Destroyer of fear.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਾਏ ॥
गुरमुखि करणी कार कराए ॥
The Gurmukh does good deeds, an inspires others to do so.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥੩੬॥
नानक गुरमुखि मेलि मिलाए ॥३६॥
O Nanak, the Gurmukh unites in the Lord's Union. ||36||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਬੇਦ ॥
गुरमुखि सासत्र सिम्रिति बेद ॥
The Gurmukh understands the Simritees, the Shaastras and the Vedas.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਭੇਦ ॥
गुरमुखि पावै घटि घटि भेद ॥
The Gurmukh knows the secrets of each and every heart.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵੈਰ ਵਿਰੋਧ ਗਵਾਵੈ ॥
गुरमुखि वैर विरोध गवावै ॥
The Gurmukh eliminates hate and envy.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਗਲੀ ਗਣਤ ਮਿਟਾਵੈ ॥
गुरमुखि सगली गणत मिटावै ॥
The Gurmukh erases all accounting.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ॥
गुरमुखि राम नाम रंगि राता ॥
The Gurmukh is imbued with love for the Lord's Name.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਖਸਮੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥੩੭॥
नानक गुरमुखि खसमु पछाता ॥३७॥
O Nanak, the Gurmukh realizes his Lord and Master. ||37||

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭਰਮੈ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
बिनु गुर भरमै आवै जाइ ॥
Without the Guru, one wanders, coming and going in reincarnation.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਘਾਲ ਨ ਪਵਈ ਥਾਇ ॥
बिनु गुर घाल न पवई थाइ ॥
Without the Guru, one's work is useless.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਮਨੂਆ ਅਤਿ ਡੋਲਾਇ ॥
बिनु गुर मनूआ अति डोलाइ ॥
Without the Guru, the mind is totally unsteady.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਇ ॥
बिनु गुर त्रिपति नही बिखु खाइ ॥ Without the Guru, one is unsatisfied, and eats poison.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਸੀਅਰੁ ਡਸੈ ਮਰਿ ਵਾਟ ॥ बिनु गुर बिसीअरु डसै मरि वाट ॥ Without the Guru, one is stung by the poisonous snake of Maya, and dies.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਘਾਟੇ ਘਾਟ ॥੩੮॥ नानक गुर बिनु घाटे घाट ॥३८॥ O Nanak without the Guru, all is lost. ||38||

ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੈ ॥ जिसु गुरु मिलै तिसु पारि उतारै ॥ One who meets the Guru is carried across.

ਅਵਗਣ ਮੇਟੈ ਗੁਣਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੈ ॥ अवगण मेटै गुणि निसतारै ॥ His sins are erased, and he is emancipated through virtue.

ਮੁਕਤਿ ਮਹਾ ਸੁਖ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ मुकति महा सुख गुर सबदु बीचारि ॥ The supreme peace of liberation is attained, contemplating the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਹਾਰਿ ॥ गुरमुखि कदे न आवै हारि ॥ The Gurmukh is never defeated.

ਤਨੁ ਹਟੜੀ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ॥ तनु हटड़ी इहु मनु वणजारा ॥ In the store of the body, this mind is the merchant;

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹਜੇ ਸਚੁ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ॥੩੯॥ नानक सहजे सचु वापारा ॥३९॥ O Nanak, it deals intuitively in Truth. ||39||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬਾਂਧਿਓ ਸੇਤੁ ਬਿਧਾਤੈ ॥ गुरमुखि बांधिओ सेतु बिधातै ॥ The Gurmukh is the bridge, built by the Architect of Destiny.

ਲੰਕਾ ਲੂਟੀ ਦੈਤ ਸੰਤਾਪੈ ॥ लंका लूटी दैत संतापै ॥ The demons of passion which plundered Sri Lanka - the body - have been conquered.

ਰਾਮਚੰਦਿ ਮਾਰਿਓ ਅਹਿ ਰਾਵਣੁ ॥ रामचंदि मारिओ अहि रावणु ॥ Ram Chand - the mind - has slaughtered Raawan - pride;

ਭੇਦੁ ਬਭੀਖਣ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਚਾਇਣੁ ॥ भेदु बभीखण गुरमुखि परचाइणु ॥ the Gurmukh understands the secret revealed by Babheekhan.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਇਰਿ ਪਾਹਣ ਤਾਰੇ ॥ गुरमुखि साइरि पाहण तारे ॥ The Gurmukh carries even stones across the ocean.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੋਟਿ ਤੇਤੀਸ ਉਧਾਰੇ ॥੪੦॥ गुरमुखि कोटि तेतीस उधारे ॥४०॥ The Gurmukh saves millions of people. ||40||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚੂਕੈ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੁ ॥ गुरमुखि चूकै आवण जाणु ॥ The comings and goings in reincarnation are ended for the Gurmukh.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵੈ ਮਾਣੁ ॥ गुरमुखि दरगह पावै माणु ॥ The Gurmukh is honored in the Court of the Lord.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਖੋਟੇ ਖਰੇ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥ गुरमुखि खोटे खरे पछाणु ॥ The Gurmukh distinguishes the true from the false.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥ गुरमुखि लागै सहजि धिआनु ॥ The Gurmukh focuses his meditation on the celestial Lord.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ गुरमुखि दरगह सिफति समाइ ॥ In the Court of the Lord, the Gurmukh is absorbed in His Praises.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੰਧੁ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥੪੧॥ नानक गुरमुखि बंधु न पाइ ॥४१॥ O Nanak, the Gurmukh is not bound by bonds. ||41||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਪਾਏ ॥ गुरमुखि नामु निरंजन पाए ॥ The Gurmukh obtains the Name of the Immaculate Lord.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥ गुरमुखि हउमै सबदि जलाए ॥ Through the Shabad, the Gurmukh burns away his ego.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ॥ गुरमुखि साचे के गुण गाए ॥ The Gurmukh sings the Glorious Praises of the True Lord.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਏ ॥ गुरमुखि साचै रहै समाए ॥ The Gurmukh remains absorbed in the True Lord.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਤਿ ਊਤਮ ਹੋਇ ॥ गुरमुखि साचि नामि पति ऊतम होइ ॥ Through the True Name, the Gurmukh is honored and exalted.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਗਲ ਭਵਣ ਕੀ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਇ ॥੪੨॥ नानक गुरमुखि सगल भवण की सोझी होइ ॥४२॥ O Nanak, the Gurmukh understands all the worlds. ||42||

ਕਵਣ ਮੂਲੁ ਕਵਣ ਮਤਿ ਵੇਲਾ ॥ कवण मूलु कवण मति वेला ॥ What is the root, the source of all? What teachings hold for these times?

ਤੇਰਾ ਕਵਣੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਤੂ ਚੇਲਾ ॥ तेरा कवणु गुरू जिस का तू चेला ॥ Who is your guru? Whose disciple are you?

ਕਵਣ ਕਥਾ ਲੇ ਰਹਹੁ ਨਿਰਾਲੇ ॥ कवण कथा ले रहहु निराले ॥ What is that speech, by which you remain unattached?

ਬੋਲੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਤੁਮ ਬਾਲੇ ॥ बोलै नानकु सुणहु तुम बाले ॥ Listen to what we say, O Nanak, you little boy.

ਏਸੁ ਕਥਾ ਕਾ ਦੇਇ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ एसु कथा का देइ बीचारु ॥ Give us your opinion on what we have said.

ਭਵਜਲੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਲੰਘਾਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੪੩॥ भवजलु सबदि लंघावणहारु ॥४३॥ How can the Shabad carry us across the terrifying world-ocean?" ||43||

ਪਵਨ ਅਰੰਭੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਤਿ ਵੇਲਾ ॥ पवन अर्मभु सतिगुर मति वेला ॥ From the air came the beginning. This is the age of the True Guru's Teachings.

ਸਬਦੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਧੁਨਿ ਚੇਲਾ ॥ सबदु गुरू सुरति धुनि चेला ॥ The Shabad is the Guru, upon whom I lovingly focus my consciousness; I am the chaylaa, the disciple.

ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਲੇ ਰਹਉ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥ अकथ कथा ले रहउ निराला ॥ Speaking the Unspoken Speech, I remain unattached.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਪਾਲਾ ॥ नानक जुगि जुगि गुर गोपाला ॥ O Nanak, throughout the ages, the Lord of the World is my Guru.

ਏਕੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਕਥਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥ एकु सबदु जितु कथा वीचारी ॥ I contemplate the sermon of the Shabad, the Word of the One God.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਅਗਨਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ॥੪੪॥ गुरमुखि हउमै अगनि निवारी ॥४४॥ The Gurmukh puts out the fire of egotism. ||44||

ਮੈਣ ਕੇ ਦੰਤ ਕਿਉ ਖਾਈਐ ਸਾਰੁ ॥ मैण के दंत किउ खाईऐ सारु ॥ With teeth of wax, how can one chew iron?

ਜਿਤੁ ਗਰਬੁ ਜਾਇ ਸੁ ਕਵਣੁ ਆਹਾਰੁ ॥ जितु गरबु जाइ सु कवणु आहारु ॥ What is that food, which takes away pride?

ਹਿਵੈ ਕਾ ਘਰੁ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਅਗਨਿ ਪਿਰਾਹਨੁ ॥ हिवै का घरु मंदरु अगनि पिराहनु ॥ How can one live in the palace, the home of snow, wearing robes of fire?

ਕਵਨ ਗੁਫਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਰਹੈ ਅਵਾਹਨੁ ॥ कवन गुफा जितु रहै अवाहनु ॥ Where is that cave, within which one may remain unshaken?

ਇਤ ਉਤ ਕਿਸ ਕਉ ਜਾਣਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥ इत उत किस कउ जाणि समावै ॥ Who should we know to be pervading here and there?

ਕਵਨ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਨਹਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੪੫॥ कवन धिआनु मनु मनहि समावै ॥४५॥ What is that meditation, which leads the mind to be absorbed in itself? ||45||

ਹਉ ਹਉ ਮੈ ਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਖੋਵੈ ॥ हउ हउ मै मै विचहु खोवै ॥ Eradicating egotism and individualism from within,

ਦੂਜਾ ਮੇਟੈ ਏਕੋ ਹੋਵੈ ॥ दूजा मेटै एको होवै ॥ and erasing duality, the mortal becomes one with God.

ਜਗੁ ਕਰੜਾ ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਗਾਵਾਰੁ ॥ जगु करड़ा मनमुखु गावारु ॥ The world is difficult for the foolish, self-willed manmukh;

ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਈਐ ਖਾਈਐ ਸਾਰੁ ॥ सबदु कमाईऐ खाईऐ सारु ॥ practicing the Shabad, one chews iron.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ अंतरि बाहरि एको जाणै ॥ Know the One Lord, inside and out.

ਨਾਨਕ ਅਗਨਿ ਮਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ॥੪੬॥ नानक अगनि मरै सतिगुर कै भाणै ॥४६॥ O Nanak, the fire is quenched, through the Pleasure of the True Guru's Will. ||46||

ਸਚ ਭੈ ਰਾਤਾ ਗਰਬੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ॥ सच भै राता गरबु निवारै ॥ Imbued with the True Fear of God, pride is taken away;

ਏਕੋ ਜਾਤਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੈ ॥ एको जाता सबदु वीचारै ॥ realize that He is One, and contemplate the Shabad.

ਸਬਦੁ ਵਸੈ ਸਚੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹੀਆ ॥ सबदु वसै सचु अंतरि हीआ ॥ With the True Shabad abiding deep within the heart,

ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਰੰਗਿ ਰੰਗੀਆ ॥ तनु मनु सीतलु रंगि रंगीआ ॥ the body and mind are cooled and soothed, and colored with the Lord's Love.

ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਬਿਖੁ ਅਗਨਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥ कामु क्रोधु बिखु अगनि निवारे ॥ The fire of sexual desire, anger and corruption is quenched.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥੪੭॥ नानक नदरी नदरि पिआरे ॥४७॥ O Nanak, the Beloved bestows His Glance of Grace. ||47||

ਕਵਨ ਮੁਖਿ ਚੰਦੁ ਹਿਵੈ ਘਰੁ ਛਾਇਆ ॥ कवन मुखि चंदु हिवै घरु छाइआ ॥ The moon of the mind is cool and dark; how is it enlightened?

ਕਵਨ ਮੁਖਿ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਤਪੈ ਤਪਾਇਆ ॥ कवन मुखि सूरजु तपै तपाइआ ॥ How does the sun blaze so brilliantly?

ਕਵਨ ਮੁਖਿ ਕਾਲੁ ਜੋਹਤ ਨਿਤ ਰਹੈ ॥ कवन मुखि कालु जोहत नित रहै ॥ How can the constant watchful gaze of Death be turned away?

ਕਵਨ ਬੁਧਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਤਿ ਰਹੈ ॥ कवन बुधि गुरमुखि पति रहै ॥ By what understanding is the honor of the Gurmukh preserved?

ਕਵਨੁ ਜੋਧੁ ਜੋ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੰਘਾਰੈ ॥ कवनु जोधु जो कालु संघारै ॥ Who is the warrior, who conquers Death?

ਬੋਲੈ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ ॥੪੮॥ बोलै बाणी नानकु बीचारै ॥४८॥ Give us your thoughtful reply, O Nanak. ||48||

ਸਬਦੁ ਭਾਖਤ ਸਸਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥ सबदु भाखत ससि जोति अपारा ॥ Giving voice to the Shabad, the moon of the mind is illuminated with infinity.

ਸਸਿ ਘਰਿ ਸੂਰੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਿਟੈ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ॥ ससि घरि सूरु वसै मिटै अंधिआरा ॥ When the sun dwells in the house of the moon, the darkness is dispelled.

ਸੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰਾ ॥ सुखु दुखु सम करि नामु अधारा ॥ Pleasure and pain are just the same, when one takes the Support of the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਆਪੇ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥ आपे पारि उतारणहारा ॥ He Himself saves, and carries us across.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਚੈ ਮਨੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ गुर परचै मनु साचि समाइ ॥ With faith in the Guru, the mind merges in Truth,

ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਖਾਇ ॥੪੯॥ प्रणवति नानकु कालु न खाइ ॥४९॥ and then, prays Nanak, one is not consumed by Death. ||49||

ਨਾਮ ਤਤੁ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਜਾਪੈ ॥ नाम ततु सभ ही सिरि जापै ॥ The essence of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is known to be the most exalted and excellent of all.

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੰਤਾਪੈ ॥ बिनु नावै दुखु कालु संतापै ॥ Without the Name, one is afflicted by pain and death.

ਤਤੋ ਤਤੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ॥ ततो ततु मिलै मनु मानै ॥ When one's essence merges into the essence, the mind is satisfied and fulfilled.

ਦੂਜਾ ਜਾਇ ਇਕਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਆਨੈ ॥ दूजा जाइ इकतु घरि आनै ॥ Duality is gone, and one enters into the home of the One Lord.

ਬੋਲੈ ਪਵਨਾ ਗਗਨੁ ਗਰਜੈ ॥ बोलै पवना गगनु गरजै ॥ The breath blows across the sky of the Tenth Gate and vibrates.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਮਿਲਣੁ ਸਹਜੈ ॥੫੦॥ नानक निहचलु मिलणु सहजै ॥५०॥ O Nanak, the mortal then intuitively meets the eternal, unchanging Lord. ||50||

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸੁੰਨੰ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਸੁੰਨੰ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਸੁੰਨ ਮਸੁੰਨੰ ॥ अंतरि सुंनं बाहरि सुंनं त्रिभवण सुंन मसुंनं ॥ The absolute Lord is deep within; the absolute Lord is outside us as well. The absolute Lord totally fills the three worlds.

ਚਉਥੇ ਸੁੰਨੈ ਜੋ ਨਰੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਪਾਪੁ ਨ ਪੁੰਨੰ ॥ चउथे सुंनै जो नरु जाणै ता कउ पापु न पुंनं ॥ One who knows the Lord in the fourth state, is not subject to virtue or vice.

ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਸੁੰਨ ਕਾ ਜਾਣੈ ਭੇਉ ॥ घटि घटि सुंन का जाणै भेउ ॥ One who knows the mystery of God the Absolute, who pervades each and every heart,

ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਦੇਉ ॥ आदि पुरखु निरंजन देउ ॥ knows the Primal Being, the Immaculate Divine Lord.

ਜੋ ਜਨੁ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਰਾਤਾ ॥ जो जनु नाम निरंजन राता ॥ That humble being who is imbued with the Immaculate Naam,

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋਈ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ॥੫੧॥ नानक सोई पुरखु बिधाता ॥५१॥ O Nanak, is himself the Primal Lord, the Architect of Destiny. ||51||

ਸੁੰਨੋ ਸੁੰਨੁ ਕਹੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥ सुंनो सुंनु कहै सभु कोई ॥ Everyone speaks of the Absolute Lord, the unmanifest void.

ਅਨਹਤ ਸੁੰਨੁ ਕਹਾ ਤੇ ਹੋਈ ॥ अनहत सुंनु कहा ते होई ॥ How can one find this absolute void?

ਅਨਹਤ ਸੁੰਨਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਕੈਸੇ ॥ अनहत सुंनि रते से कैसे ॥ Who are they, who are attuned to this absolute void?

ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਉਪਜੇ ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਜੈਸੇ ॥ जिस ते उपजे तिस ही जैसे ॥ They are like the Lord, from whom they originated.

ਓਇ ਜਨਮਿ ਨ ਮਰਹਿ ਨ ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥ ओइ जनमि न मरहि न आवहि जाहि ॥ They are not born, they do not die; they do not come and go.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਨੁ ਸਮਝਾਹਿ ॥੫੨॥ नानक गुरमुखि मनु समझाहि ॥५२॥ O Nanak, the Gurmukhs instruct their minds. ||52||

ਨਉ ਸਰ ਸੁਭਰ ਦਸਵੈ ਪੂਰੇ ॥ नउ सर सुभर दसवै पूरे ॥ By practicing control over the nine gates, one attains perfect control over the Tenth Gate.

ਤਹ ਅਨਹਤ ਸੁੰਨ ਵਜਾਵਹਿ ਤੂਰੇ ॥ तह अनहत सुंन वजावहि तूरे ॥ There, the unstruck sound current of the absolute Lord vibrates and resounds.

ਸਾਚੈ ਰਾਚੇ ਦੇਖਿ ਹਜੂਰੇ ॥ साचै राचे देखि हजूरे ॥ Behold the True Lord ever-present, and merge with Him.

ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰੇ ॥ घटि घटि साचु रहिआ भरपूरे ॥ The True Lord is pervading and permeating each and every heart.
