Pyare means Love for the Lord and His creation. This is one of five virtues that is vigorously promoted by the Sikh Gurus. The other four qualities in the arsenal are: Truth (Sat), Contentment (Santokh), Compassion (Daya) and Humility (Nimrata). These five qualities are essential to a Sikh and it is their duty to meditate and recite the Gurbani so that these virtues become a part of their mind set.
This is a very positive and powerful tool in the Sikhs arsenal of virtues. When one's mind is full of love, the person will overlook deficiency in others and accept them wholeheartedly as a product of God. Sikhism asks all believers to take on "god-like" virtues and this perhaps is the most "god-like" characteristic of all.
Gurbani tells us that Waheguru is a "loving God", full of compassion and kindness. It is the duty of the Sikh to take on qualities of this nature and to easily forgive; to never hate anyone; to live in His Hukam - "Will" and to practise compassion and humility.
The holy Granth informs us that a mind which harbour love is painted in the Lord's colours thus: "My mind is imbued with the Lord's Love; it is dyed a deep crimson. Truth and charity are my white clothes." (SGGS p 16) Ones mind has to be immersed in love of the Lord at all times to comply with this line from Gurbani; practise truth and charity and the real gifts of human life will be yours.
The Guru also tells us holy this state of mind can be achieved - read on "Join the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, and find the Lord. The Gurmukh embraces love for the Lord." (SGGS p 22) and "Attuned to the Love of the One, there is no sorrow or suffering.(3)" (SGGS p 45) when one loves the Lord, all their sorrows. pain and suffering are removed from ones life and everlasting peace and tranquillity is found.
Gurbani
In the following Shabads from the Sri Guru Granth Sahib one can get a flavour of the way to attain the correct frame of mind to make progress in one's spiritual life; the holy Granth tells us that there are Five virtues that one must keep close to ones heart if they wish to find peace and come closer to God. These five virtues are: Sat (Truth), Santokh (Contentment), Daya (Compassion), Nimrata (Humility) and Pyare (Love). The Sikh Gurus taught that to achieve the highest human goal it was important to work hard at developing positive human qualities which lead the soul closer to God.
The Gurus taught that all human beings have the qualities they need to reunite with God but they must train their minds to make the most of these qualities. In order to reach the final goal of life, Sikhs believe that they must constantly develop their love for God by developing compassion for all God’s creation.
One of the most important aims of the devotee is to enshrine love for the Lord and for the Lord's creation in their heart. Don't have enmity or anger or vengeance for others; look upon all as sparks of the Creator. Some of these sparks will have the quality of the Lord but others may resemble ash; however they all come from the same light source.
Enshrine love and tenderness and kinship with all your fellow beings; be humble; be loving; be forgiving and the Lord will be realised within. The tall Guru tell us "Within the home of your own inner being, you shall obtain the Mansion of the Lord's Presence with intuitive ease. You shall not be consigned again to the wheel of reincarnation.(3)" (SGGS p 13)
Let your mind be filled with love
The first verse below tells us how to move on this path of "prem marg" the "path of love"; the Guru tells us to sing and listen to Gurbani and let your mind receive the love of the Almighty; remembering the Father and the Mother realise the great gift of human life endowed upon you; remove negativity from your heart and mind; let the mind flow with His love; bring yourself close to the Creator; remember the word uttered by Guru Teg Bahadur, the ninth Nanak "Says Nanak, the Lord is the Saving Grace and the Protector of His devotees; believe it - He is close to you.(2)(1)" (SGGS p 830) So the Creator is not far, He is close and can be reached easily provided you have the qualities required; these positive qualities are your pass to the inner domain of the Lord.
| ਗਾਵੀਝ ਸਣੀਝ ਮਨਿ ਰਖੀਝ ਭਾਉ ॥ ਦਖ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਸਖ ਘਰਿ ਲੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| Gĝvī▫ai suṇī▫ai man rakẖī▫ai bẖĝ▫o. Ḏukẖ parhar sukẖ gẖar lai jĝ▫e. |
| Sing, and listen, and let your mind be filled with love.
Your pain shall be sent far away, and peace shall come to your home. |
The mind and body become spotlessly pure
| ਮਨ ਤਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹੋਇਆ ਲਾਗੀ ਸਾਚ ਪਰੀਤਿ ॥ ਚਰਣ ਭਜੇ ਪਾਰਬਰਹਮ ਕੇ ਸਭਿ ਜਪ ਤਪ ਤਿਨ ਹੀ ਕੀਤਿ ॥੩॥ |
| Man ṯan nirmal ho▫i▫ĝ lĝgī sĝcẖ parīṯ. Cẖaraṇ bẖaje pĝrbarahm ke sabẖ jap ṯap ṯin hī kīṯ.(3) |
| The mind and body become spotlessly pure, enshrining love for the True Lord.
One who dwells upon the Feet of the Supreme Lord God has truly performed all meditations and austerities.(3) |
The inner being is empty without love
| ਚਿਤੇ ਦਿਸਹਿ ਧਉਲਹਰ ਬਗੇ ਬੰਕ ਦਆਰ ॥ ਕਰਿ ਮਨ ਖਸੀ ਉਸਾਰਿਆ ਦੂਜੈ ਹੇਤਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥ ਅੰਦਰ ਖਾਲੀ ਪਰੇਮ ਬਿਨ ਢਹਿ ਢੇਰੀ ਤਨ ਛਾਰ ॥੧॥ |
| Cẖiṯe ḝisėh ḝẖa▫ulhar bage bank ḝu▫ĝr. Kar man kẖusī usĝri▫ĝ ḝūjai heṯ pi▫ĝr. Anḝar kẖĝlī parem bin dẖėh dẖerī |
| ṯan cẖẖĝr.(1)
There are painted mansions to behold, white-washed, with beautiful doors; they were constructed to give pleasure to the mind, but this is only for the sake of the love of duality. The inner being is empty without love. The body shall crumble into a heap of ashes.(1) |
You shall be united with your Lord
| ਭੈ ਕੇ ਚਰਣ ਕਰ ਭਾਵ ਕੇ ਲੋਇਣ ਸਰਤਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਹੈ ਸਿਆਣੀਝ ਇਵ ਕੰਤ ਮਿਲਾਵਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥ |
| Bẖai ke cẖaraṇ kar bẖĝv ke lo▫iṇ suraṯ kare▫i. Nĝnak kahai si▫ĝṇī▫e iv kanṯ milĝvĝ ho▫e.(2) |
| Let the Fear of God be your feet, and let His Love be your hands; let His Understanding be your eyes.
Says Nanak, in this way, O wise soul-bride, you shall be united with your Husband Lord. (2) |
