Karam Khand, is the fourth level of what Guru Nanak Dev Ji calls the "Panj khand" - Five domains of conscious awareness. "Karam" means "action" or "deed". In this sphere or domain, the Bani (Word) or Shabad is power. Without Bani or Word, one cannot enter this realm. Those souls who are totally fulfilled, imbued with the Lord's Essence can dwell here; death and deception cannot touch the residents of this region. Gurbani tells us that there are these five such levels or domains of reality in human development. The Five Realms described in the Bani are:

The residents of this domain have the moral strength to speak the unspoken TRUTH and to motivate others to stand up against exploitation & oppression by those who still love duality. Nanak challenges us to walk by him in the plundered streets of massacred humanity raising his voice against tyrants like Babar and their inhuman kingdom. This is a place of formlessness, for here thoughts instead of forming shapes express themselves as formless radiating vibrations. It is these that Guru Nanak Dev Ji calls, “jor”, the force.

Karam Khand ki bani jor.

Karam Khand and Sach Khand exist in such fashion as a house and varaandaah (Lawn) exists. Varaandah is like the outskirts of a house but within the boundary of the property. Normally the top of the varandaah near the house is covered with a is ceiling. From Karam Khand one can view the inside of the house and know what is going on inside but can’t go inside. There is immense Anand (Bliss) in this Khand. Both Karam Khand and Sach Khand are eternal Khands. Here only the mighty can reach, this is the abode of the highest god-like souls.

Tithai jodh maha bal sur
Tim meh raam rehia bharpur
Tithai sito sita mehma mahey.
Ta kay rupe na kathne jahey
Na oh mareh na thage jai
Jin ke raam vasai man mahey
Tithai bhagat vasah ke loe.

The words “Tithai jodh maha bal sur” refer to the mighty spiritual powers who battled with themselves and ultimately attained this level. These are those who are filled with God and the realisation of God. Here women of the highest virtue like Sita, reach their Rupa or form, although the form cannot be describes as in fact it is formless. Those who live here never die, nor can they ever be deceived, this being so because they are all, knowledge. Here live the saints of the highest order who guide the world and who are filled with His name and are perfectly at bliss

Karmi karmi hoy Veechar

Karam Khand (the realm of grace) is the sphere where reigns the Divine grace. The process of liberation with grace initiated is now brought to completion. All sense of dualism ends. The devotee is one with the Lord and with those who have attained this state of bliss. One reaches here only after achieving a heroic victory over the evils. Yet he is not a passive devotee, but a man of awakened courage and great deeds.

Karam kẖand kī baṇī jor. Ŧithai hor na koī hor.
In the realm of karma, the Word is Power. No one else dwells there,
Ŧithai joḝẖ mahĝbal sūr. Ŧin meh rĝm rahiĝ bẖarpūr.
except the warriors of great power, the spiritual heroes. They are totally fulfilled, imbued with the Lord's Essence.
Ŧithai sīṯo sīṯĝ mahimĝ mĝhi. Ŧĝ kė rūp na kathnė jĝhi.
Myriads of Sitas are there, cool and calm in their majestic glory. Their beauty cannot be described.
Nĝ ohi mareh na ṯẖĝgė jĝhi. Jin kai rĝm vasai man mĝhi.
Neither death nor deception comes to those, within whose minds the Lord abides.
Ŧithai bẖagaṯ vaseh kė loa. Karahi anand sacẖĝ man soė.
The devotees of many worlds dwell there. They celebrate; their minds are imbued with the True Lord.
