ਅਥ ਸੂਰਜ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਕਥਨੰ ॥ अथ सूरज अवतार कथनं ॥ Now begins the description of the Suraj (Sun) Incarnation:

ਸ੝ਰੀ ਭਗਉਤੀ ਜੀ ਸਹਾਇ ॥ सढ़री भगउती जी सहाइ ॥ Let Sri Bhagauti Ji (The Primal Lord) be helpful.

ਚੌਪਈ ॥ चौपई ॥ CHAUPAI

ਬਹ੝ਰਿ ਬਢੇ ਦਿਤਿ ਪ੝ਤ੝ਰ ਅਤ੝ਲਿ ਬਲਿ ॥ ਅਰਿ ਅਨੇਕ ਜੀਤੇ ਜਿਨ ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ॥ बहढ़रि बढे दिति पढ़तढ़र अतढ़लि बलि ॥ अरि अनेक जीते जिन जलि थलि ॥ The might of demos, the sons of Diti, increased very much and they conquered many enemies in water and on land.

ਕਾਲ ਪ੝ਰਖ ਕੀ ਆਗਯਾ ਪਾਈ॥ਸੂਰਜ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਧਰਿਯੋ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਈ ॥੧॥ काल पढ़रख की आगया पाई॥सूरज अवतार धरियो हरि राई ॥१॥ Receiving the command of the Immanent Lord, Vishnu manifested himself as Suraj incarnation.1.

ਚੌਪਈ ॥ चौपई ॥ CHAUPAI

ਜੇ ਜੇ ਹੋਤ ਅਸ੝ਰ ਬਲਵਾਨਾ ॥ ਰਵਿ ਮਾਰਤ ਤਿਨ ਕੋ ਬਿਧਿ ਨਾਨਾ ॥ जे जे होत असढ़र बलवाना ॥ रवि मारत तिन को बिधि नाना ॥ Wherever the demons become Lord, Vishnu manifested himself as Suraj incarnation kills them in different ways.

ਅੰਧਕਾਰ ਧਰਨੀ ਤੇ ਹਰੇ ॥ ਪ੝ਰਜਾ ਕਾਜ ਗ੝ਰਿਹ ਕੇ ਉਠਿ ਪਰੇ ॥੨॥ अंधकार धरनी ते हरे ॥ पढ़रजा काज गढ़रिह के उठि परे ॥२॥ The sun destroyed the darkness from the earth and in order to give comfort to the subjects, he used to roam hither and thither.2.

ਨਰਾਜ ਛੰਦ ॥ नराज छंद ॥ NARAAJ STANZA

ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਆਲਸੰ ਸਭੈ ਪ੝ਰਭਾਤ ਲੋਗ ਜਾਗਹੀਂ ॥ ਅਨੰਤਿ ਜਾਪ ਕੋ ਜਪੈਂ ਬਿਅੰਤ ਧਯਾਨ ਪਾਗਹੀਂ ॥ बिसारि आलसं सभै पढ़रभात लोग जागहीं ॥ अनंति जाप को जपैं बिअंत धयान पागहीं ॥ (Seeing the Sun,) all the people abandoned idleness and woke up at dawn and meditating on the Omnipresent Lord, used to repeat His Name in various ways.

ਦ੝ਰੰਤ ਕਰਮ ਕੋ ਕਰੈਂ ਅਥਾਪ ਥਾਪ ਥਾਪਹੀਂ ॥ ਗਾਇਤ੝ਰੀ ਸੰਧਿਯਾਨ ਕੈ ਅਜਾਪ ਜਾਪ ਜਾਪਹੀ ॥੩॥ दढ़रंत करम को करैं अथाप थाप थापहीं ॥ गाइतढ़री संधियान कै अजाप जाप जापही ॥३॥ Working on difficult jobs, they used to stablise in their mind the Uninstallable Lord and used to recite the Gyatri and Sandhya.3.

ਸ੝ ਦੇਵ ਕਰਮ ਆਦਿ ਲੈ ਪ੝ਰਭਾਤਿ ਜਾਗ ਕੈ ਕਰੈਂ ॥ ਸ੝ ਜਗ ਧੂਪ ਦੀਪ ਹੋਮ ਬੇਦ ਬਿਯਾਕਰਨ ਰਰੈਂ ॥ सढ़ देव करम आदि लै पढ़रभाति जाग कै करैं ॥ सढ़ जग धूप दीप होम बेद बियाकरन ररैं ॥ All the people, repeating the name of the Lord, used to perform godly deeds and also reflected on the Vedas and Vyakarna etc. alongwith the burning of incense, lighting the earthen lamps and performing Yajnas.

ਸ੝ ਪਿਤ੝ਰ ਕਰਮ ਹੈਂ ਜਿਤੇ ਸੋ ਬ੝ਰਿਤਬ੝ਰਿਤ ਕੋ ਕਰੈਂ ॥ ਜ੝ ਸਾਸਤ੝ਰ ਸਿਮ੝ਰਿਤਿ ਉਚਰੰਤ ਸ੝ ਧਰਮ ਧਯਾਨ ਕੋ ਧਰੈਂ ॥੪॥ सढ़ पितढ़र करम हैं जिते सो बढ़रितबढ़रित को करैं ॥ जढ़ सासतढ़र सिमढ़रिति उचरंत सढ़ धरम धयान को धरैं ॥४॥ They used to perform rituals for the manes according to their power and used to concentrate on virtuous actions alongwith the recitation of Shastras, Smritis etc.4.

ਅਰਧ ਨਿਰਾਜ ਛੰਦ ॥ अरध निराज छंद ॥ ARDH NIRAAJ STANZA

ਸ੝ ਧੂੰਮ ਧੂੰਮ ਹੀ ॥ ਕਰੰਤ ਸੈਨ ਭੂੰਮਿ ਹੀ ॥ सढ़ धूम धूम ही ॥ करंत सैन भूमि ही ॥ The smoke of Yajnas was visible on all the four sides and all the people slept on the earth.

ਬਿਅੰਤਿ ਧਯਾਨ ਧਯਾਵਹੀਂ ॥ ਦ੝ਰੰਤ ਠਉਰ ਪਾਵਹੀਂ ॥੫॥ बिअंति धयान धयावहीं ॥ दढ़रंत ठउर पावहीं ॥५॥ Performing mediation and worship in many ways, they used to work for the growth of distant places.5.

ਅਨੰਤ ਮੰਤ੝ਰ ਉਚਰੈਂ ॥ ਸ੝ ਜੋਗ ਜਾਪਨਾ ਕਰੈਂ ॥ अनंत मंतढ़र उचरैं ॥ सढ़ जोग जापना करैं ॥ Reciting many mantras, the people performed Yogic discipline and repeated the Name.

ਨ੝ਰਿਬਾਨ ਪ੝ਰਖ ਧਯਾਵਹੀਂ ॥ ਬਿਮਾਨ ਅੰਤਿ ਪਾਵਹੀਂ ॥੬॥ नढ़रिबान पढ़रख धयावहीं ॥ बिमान अंति पावहीं ॥६॥ They meditated on the Detached Supreme Purusha and ultimately they acquired the air-vehicles for transportation to heaven.6.

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥ दोहरा ॥ DOHRA

ਬਹ੝ਤ ਕਾਲ ਇਮ ਬੀਤਯੋ ਕਰਤ ਧਰਮ੝ ਅਰ੝ ਦਾਨ॥ ਬਹ੝ਰਿ ਅਸ੝ਰਿ ਬਢਿਯੋ ਪ੝ਰਬਲ ਦੀਰਘ੝ ਕਾਇ ਦਤ੝ ਮਾਨ ॥੭॥ बहढ़त काल इम बीतयो करत धरमढ़ अरढ़ दान॥ बहढ़रि असढ़रि बढियो पढ़रबल दीरघढ़ काइ दतढ़ मान ॥७॥ In this way a good deal of time elapsed in performing religious and charitable actions and then a powerful demon named deeraghkaya was born.7.

ਚੌਪਈ ॥ चौपई ॥ CHAUPAI

ਬਾਣ ਪ੝ਰਜੰਤ ਬਢਤ ਨਿਤਪ੝ਰਤਿ ਤਨ ॥ ਨਿਸਿ ਦਿਨ ਘਾਤ ਕਰਤ ਦਿਜ ਦੇਵਨ ॥ बाण पढ़रजंत बढत नितपढ़रति तन ॥ निसि दिन घात करत दिज देवन ॥ His body increased in length everyday by the length of an arrow and he destroyed the gods and twice-born night and day.

ਦੀਰਘ੝ ਕਾਇ ਝਸੋ ਰਿਪ੝ ਭਯੋ ॥ ਰਵਿ ਰਥਿ ਹਟਕ ਚਲਨ ਤੇ ਗਯੋ ॥੮॥ दीरघढ़ काइ झसो रिपढ़ भयो ॥ रवि रथि हटक चलन ते गयो ॥८॥ On the birth of the enemy like deeraghkaya, even the chariot of the sun hesitated to move.8.

ਅੜਿਲ ॥ अड़िल ॥ ARIL

ਹਟਕ ਚਲਤ ਰਥ੝ ਭਯੋ ਭਾਨ ਕੋਪਿਯੋ ਤਬੈ ॥ ਅਸਤ੝ਰ ਸਸਤ੝ਰ ਲੈ ਚਲਿਯੋ ਸੰਗ ਲੈ ਦਲ ਸਭੈ ॥ हटक चलत रथढ़ भयो भान कोपियो तबै ॥ असतढ़र ससतढ़र लै चलियो संग लै दल सभै ॥ When the chariot of the sun stopped moving, the sun, then in great fury, marched forward alongwith his arms, weapons and forces.

ਮੰਡਿਯੋ ਬਿਬਿਧ ਪ੝ਰਕਾਰ ਤਹਾਂ ਰਣ ਜਾਇਕੈ ॥ ਹੋ ਨਿਰਖ ਦੇਵ ਅਰ੝ ਦੈਤ ਰਹੇ ਉਰਝਾਇਕੈ ॥੯॥ मंडियो बिबिध पढ़रकार तहां रण जाइकै ॥ हो निरख देव अरढ़ दैत रहे उरझाइकै ॥९॥ He started various types of war seeing which both gods and demons, experienced a dilemma.9.

ਗਹਿ ਗਹਿ ਪਾਣ ਕ੝ਰਿਪਾਣ ਦ੝ਬਹੀਯਾ ਰਣਿ ਭਿਰੇ ॥ ਟੂਕ ਟੂਕ ਹ੝ਝ ਗਿਰੇ ਨ ਪਗ ਪਾਛੇ ਫਿਰੇ॥ गहि गहि पाण कढ़रिपाण दढ़बहीया रणि भिरे ॥ टूक टूक हढ़झ गिरे न पग पाछे फिरे॥ Holding their swords in their hands, the warriors of both the side, fought with one another in the battlefield. They fell, having been chopped into bits, but still they did not retrace their steps.

ਅੰਗਨਿ ਸੋਭੇ ਘਾਇ ਪ੝ਰਭਾ ਅਤਿ ਹੀ ਬਢੇ ॥ ਹੋ ਬਸਤ੝ਰ ਮਨੋ ਛਿਟਕਾਇ ਜਨੇਤੀ ਸੇ ਚਢੇ ॥੧੦॥ अंगनि सोभे घाइ पढ़रभा अति ही बढे ॥ हो बसतढ़र मनो छिटकाइ जनेती से चढे ॥१०॥ Having been wounded, their increased still further and they appeared like the members of the marriage party walking and exhibiting their dressers.10.

ਅਨ੝ਭਵ ਛੰਦ ॥ अनढ़भव छंद ॥ ANBHAV STANZA

ਅਨਹਦ ਬੱਜੇ ॥ ਧ੝ਣਿ ਘਣ ਲੱਜੇ ॥ अनहद बढ़जे ॥ धढ़णि घण लढ़जे ॥ Hearing the resounding of the trumpets, the clouds are feeling shy.

ਘਣ ਹਣ ਘੋਰੰ ॥ ਜਣ ਬਣ ਮੋਰੰ ॥੧੧॥ घण हण घोरं ॥ जण बण मोरं ॥११॥ The army is swelling forward like the clouds, from all the four side, and it appears that there is a large gathering of peacocks in the forest.11.

ਮਧ੝ਰ ਧ੝ਨਿ ਛੰਦ ॥ मधढ़र धढ़नि छंद ॥ MADHUR DHUN STANZA

ਢਲ ਹਲ ਢਾਲੰ ॥ ਜਿਮ ਗ੝ਲ ਲਾਲੰ ॥ ढल हल ढालं ॥ जिम गढ़ल लालं ॥ The luster of the shields appears like the red roses.

ਖੜ ਭੜ ਬੀਰੰ ॥ ਤੜ ਸੜ ਤੀਰੰ ॥੧੨॥ खड़ भड़ बीरं ॥ तड़ सड़ तीरं ॥१२॥ The movement of warriors and the shooting of arrows are creating different distinct sounded.12.

ਰ੝ਣ ਝ੝ਣ ਬਾਜੇ ॥ ਜਣ ਘਣ ਗਾਜੇ ॥ रढ़ण झढ़ण बाजे ॥ जण घण गाजे ॥ Such a sound is being heard in the battlefield as if the clouds are thundering.

ਢੰਮਕ ਢੋਲੰ ॥ ਖੜ ਰੜ ਖੋਲੰ ॥੧੩॥ ढमक ढोलं ॥ खड़ रड़ खोलं ॥१३॥ The resounding of the drums and the sound of the empty quivers is also being hard.13.

ਥਰ ਹਰ ਕੰਪੈ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜੰਪੈ ॥ थर हर कढ़मपै ॥ हरि हरि जढ़मपै ॥ The warriors are battled and seeing the dreadful war, they are mediating upon the Lord-God.

ਰਣ ਰੰਗ ਰੱਤੇ ॥ ਜਣ੝ ਗਣ ਮਤੇ ॥੧੪॥ रण रंग ढ़रते ॥ जणढ़ गण मते ॥१४॥ All are absorbed in the war and are submerged in the thoughts of war.14.

ਥਰਕਤ ਸੂਰੰ ॥ ਨਿਰਖਤ ਹੂਰੰ ॥ थरकत सूरं ॥ निरखत हूरं ॥ The brave fighters are moving hither and thither and the heavenly damsels are looking at them.

ਸਰਬਰ ਛ੝ੱਟੇ ॥ ਕਟਿ ਭਟ ਲ੝ਟੇ ॥੧੫॥ सरबर छढ़ढ़टे ॥ कटि भट लढ़टे ॥१५॥ The heroes have abandoned everything and having been chopped several warriors have played with their lives.15.

ਚਮਕਤ ਬਾਣੰ ॥ ਫ੝ਰਹ ਨਿਸਾਣੰ ॥ चमकत बाणं ॥ फढ़रह निसाणं ॥ The arrows are glittering and the flags are flying;

ਚਟ ਪਟ ਜ੝ਟੇ ॥ ਅਰਿ ਉਰ ਫ੝ਟੇ ॥੧੬॥ चट पट जढ़टे ॥ अरि उर फढ़टे ॥१६॥ The warriors are fighting face to face very quickly and the blood is oozing out of their chests.16.

ਨਰ ਬਰ ਗੱਜੇ ॥ ਸਰ ਬਰ ਸੱਜੇ ॥ नर बर गढ़जे ॥ सर बर सढ़जे ॥ Bedecked with the arrows, the brave warriors are roaring;

ਸਿਲਹ ਸੰਜੋਯੰ ॥ ਸ੝ਰ ਪ੝ਰ ਪੋਯੰ ॥੧੭॥ सिलह संजोयं ॥ सढ़र पढ़र पोयं ॥१७॥ They are ornamented with steel armours and are moving towards heaven.17.

ਸਰਬਰ ਛੂਟੇ ॥ ਅਰ ਉਰ ਫੂਟੇ ॥ सरबर छूटे ॥ अर उर फूटे ॥ When the superior arrows are discharged, the chests of the enemies are wounded.

ਚਟ ਪਟ ਚਰਮੰ ॥ ਫਟ ਫ੝ਟ ਬਰਮੰ ॥੧੮॥ चट पट चरमं ॥ फट फढ़ट बरमं ॥१८॥ The shields being cut are producing knocking sound and the armours are being torn.18.

ਨਰਾਜ ਛੰਦ ॥ नराज छंद ॥ NARAAJ STANZA

ਦਿਨੇਸ ਬਾਣ ਪਾਣਿ ਲੈ ਰਿਪੇਸ ਤਾਕਿ ਧਾਈਯੰ ॥ ਅਨੰਤ ਜ੝ੱਧ ਕ੝ਰ੝ੱਧ ਸ੝ੱਧ੝ ਭੂਮਿ ਮੈ ਮਚਾਈਯੰ ॥ दिनेस बाण पाणि लै रिपेस ताकि धाईयं ॥ अनंत जढ़ढ़ध कढ़रढ़ढ़ध सढ़ढ़धढ़ भूमि मै मचाईयं ॥ Taking his arrow in his hand, Suraj ran towards the enemy Deeraghkaya and in great ire began a dreadful war.

ਕਿਤੇਕ ਭਾਜਿ ਚਾਲੀਯੰ ਸ੝ਰੇਸ ਲੋਗ ਕੋ ਗਝ ॥ ਨਿਸੰਤ ਜੀਤ ਜੀਤ ਕੈ ਅਨੰਤ ਸੂਰਮਾ ਲਝ ॥੧੯॥ कितेक भाजि चालीयं सढ़रेस लोग को गझ ॥ निसंत जीत जीत कै अनंत सूरमा लझ ॥१९॥ Many people came running under the refuge of gods, and Suraj, who ends the night, conquered many warriors.19.

ਸਿਮਟ ਸੇਲ ਸਾਮ੝ਹੇ ਸਰਕ ਸੂਰ ਝਾੜਹੀਂ ॥ ਬਬਕ ਬਾਘ ਜਯੋਂ ਬਲੀ ਹਲਕ ਹਾਕ ਮਾਰਹੀਂ ॥ सिमट सेल सामढ़हे सरक सूर झाड़हीं ॥ बबक बाघ जयों बली हलक हाक मारहीं ॥ The warriors are striking the daggers, holding them tightly and coming face to face and the brave fighters are challenging one another, roaring like the lions.

ਅਭੰਗ ਅੰਗ ਭੰਗ ਹ੝ਵੈ ਉਤੰਗ ਜੰਗ ਮੋ ਗਿਰੇ ॥ ਸ੝ਰੰਗ ਸੂਰਮਾ ਸਭੈ ਨਿਸੰਗ ਜਾਨ ਕੈ ਅਰੇ ॥੨੦॥ अभंग अंग भंग हढ़वै उतंग जंग मो गिरे ॥ सढ़रंग सूरमा सभै निसंग जान कै अरे ॥२०॥ The firm limbs, after swinging continuously, are falling down and the brave and beautiful fighters, fearlessly coming face to face with others are clashing.20.

ਅਰਧ ਨਰਾਜ ਛੰਦ ॥ अरध नराज छंद ॥ ARDH NARAAJ STNAZA

ਨਵੰ ਨਿਸਾਣ ਬਾਜੀਯੰ ॥ ਘਟਾ ਘਮੰਡ ਲਾਜੀਯੰ ॥ नवं निसाण बाजीयं ॥ घटा घमंड लाजीयं ॥ Listening to the resonance of the trumpets, the clouds are feeling shy.

ਤਬੱਲ ਤ੝ੰਦਰੰ ਬਜੇ ॥ ਸ੝ਣੰਤ ਸੂਰਮਾ ਗਜੇ ॥੨੧॥ तबढ़ल तढ़ंदरं बजे ॥ सढ़णंत सूरमा गजे ॥२१॥ The fastened trumpets have resounded and haring their sound, the warriors are thundering.21.

ਸ੝ ਜੂਝਿ ਜੂਝਿ ਕੈ ਪਰੈਂ ॥ ਸ੝ਰੇਸ ਲੋਗ ਬਿਚਰੈਂ ॥ सढ़ जूझि जूझि कै परैं ॥ सढ़रेस लोग बिचरैं ॥ Fighting ferociously, the gods and their kings are moving (here and there).

ਚੜੈ ਬਿਵਾਨ ਸੋਭਹੀ ॥ ਅਦੇਵ ਦੇਵ ਲੋਭਹੀ ॥੨੨॥ चड़ै बिवान सोभही ॥ अदेव देव लोभही ॥२२॥ They are roaming by mountain on air-vehicles and the harts of the gods and demons both are feeling envious.22.

ਬੇਲੀ ਬਿੰਦ੝ਰਮ ਛੰਦ ॥ बेली बिंदढ़रम छंद ॥ BELI BINDRAM STANZA

ਡਹ ਡਹ ਸ੝ ਡਾਮਰ ਡੰਕਣੀ ॥ ਕਹ ਕਹ ਸ੝ ਕੂਕਤ ਜੋਗਣੀ ॥ डह डह सढ़ डामर डंकणी ॥ कह कह सढ़ कूकत जोगणी ॥ The sound of he tabors of vampires and the cries of the Yoginis are being heard.

ਝਮ ਝਮਕ ਸਾਂਗ ਝਮੱਕੀਯੰ ॥ ਰਣਿ ਗਾਜ ਬਾਜ ਉਥੱਕੀਯੰ ॥੨੩॥ झम झमक सांग झमढ़कीयं ॥ रणि गाज बाज उथढ़कीयं ॥२३॥ The daggers are glistening and glittering and the elephants and horses are jumping in the battlefield.23.

ਢਮ ਢਮਕ ਢੋਲ ਢਮੱਕੀਯੰ ॥ ਝਲ ਝਲਕ ਤੇਗ ਝਲੱਕੀਯੰ ॥ ढम ढमक ढोल ढमढ़कीयं ॥ झल झलक तेग झलढ़कीयं ॥ The resonance of drum is being heard and the luster of swords is glimmering.

ਜਟ ਛੋਰਿ ਰ੝ਦ੝ਰ ਤਹ ਨੱਚੀਯੰ ॥ ਬਿਕ੝ਰਾਰ ਮਾਰ ਜਹ ਮੱਚੀਯੰ ॥੨੪॥ जट छोरि रढ़दढ़र तह नढ़चीयं ॥ बिकढ़रार मार जह मढ़चीयं ॥२४॥ Rudra is also dancing there with his loosened matted hair and a dreadful war is being waged there.24.

ਤੋਟਕ ਛੰਦ ॥ तोटक छंद ॥ TOTAK STNAZA

ਉਥਕੇ ਰਣਿ ਬੀਰਣ ਬਾਜ ਬਰੰ ॥ ਝਮਕੀ ਘਣ ਬਿੱਜ੝ ਕ੝ਰਿਪਾਣ ਕਰੰ ॥ उथके रणि बीरण बाज बरं ॥ झमकी घण बिढ़जढ़ कढ़रिपाण करं ॥ The winsome horses of the warriors are jumping in the war and the sword are glistening in their hands like the flash of lightning in the clouds.

ਲਹਕੇ ਰਣ ਧੀਰਣ ਬਾਣ ਉਰੰ ॥ ਰੰਗ ਸ੝ਰੋਣਤ ਰੱਤ ਕਢੇ ਦ੝ਸਰੰ ॥੨੫॥ लहके रण धीरण बाण उरं ॥ रंग सढ़रोणत ढ़रत कढे दढ़सरं ॥२५॥ The arrows are seen penetrated in the waist of the warriors and they are taking out the blood of one antoher.25.

ਫਹਰੰਤ ਧ੝ਜਾ ਥਹਰੰਤ ਭਟੰ ॥ ਨਿਰਖੰਤ ਲਜੀ ਛਬਿ ਸਯਾਮ ਘਟੰ ॥ फहरंत धढ़जा थहरंत भटं ॥ निरखंत लजी छबि सयाम घटं ॥ The flags are fluttering and the brave fighters have become fearful, seeing the glitter of the arrows and the swords, the lightning in the dark clouds is also feeling shy;

ਚਮਕੰਤ ਸ੝ ਬਾਣ ਕ੝ਰਿਪਾਣ ਰਣੰ ॥ ਜਿਮ ਕਉਧਿਤ ਸਾਵਣ ਬਿੱਜ੝ ਘਣੰ ॥੨੬॥ चमकंत सढ़ बाण कढ़रिपाण रणं ॥ जिम कउधित सावण बिढ़जढ़ घणं ॥२६॥ And this scene looks like the flash of lightning in the thundering clouds of the month of Sawan.26.

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥ दोहरा ॥ DOHRA
